How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

I don't want a red dot notifying me of notifications though!

samsays345 · 10/11/2020 15:24

I think it's really great tbh. Love it on Facebook and Twitter. Love it on here.

vanillandhoney · 10/11/2020 15:25

It's pointless. It's just what the "threads I'm on/watching" function is for.

Why can't we turn it off?

Exactly. I dont need to be notified that people have added to a thread I posted on, I can see that when I check the thread. Its frustrating as its showing 20+ notifications and I don't seem to be able to clear it unless I click on each notification??
Thatwentbadly · 10/11/2020 15:27

@SoupDragon

Can we turn them off?
Please can we turn them off?

Another vote for turn it off, please!

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 15:30

I don't really want it thanks, sorry to be ungrateful! I follow threads I have commented on and have the tag thing turned off because I didn't want the emails. I only want a notification for PMs.

DappledThings · 10/11/2020 15:30

There is a mark all as read option which saves you doing them all individually. Not sure why they've made that grey as it makes it less than obvious.

Still not as helpful as an option just to switch them off entirely would be.

I don't get why this function is needed? Is it to make MN just like every other site. Is the Like button just around the corner?

JustscreamMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:38

Hiya,
I understand those saying it's not necessary - because you can look at threads I'm on/ watching - but with the old system you'd have to check those to know if anyone had posted on those threads (or get an email notification). This saves you having to check, which some people have said they'd like.

The volume of notifications showing at launch is artificially high - it's because it's been released on the testing environment for a few days before going out live - sorry about that. Once you've cleared those then it will work normally.
Can we just give it a few days to settle and then see how we all feel - as said it's a pretty standard feature on most sites? Thanks for the feedback though, always useful.

Thank you I didn't see it initially so that's super helpful. At least now the red circles gone, well until people comment on a thread I've also commented on again. Seems like I'll have to click mark all as read repeatedly throughout the day, which is totally frustrating given it's not something I wanted. Hmm

@JanineMumsnet I’ve cleared mine several times and it still shows 20+ notifications

diddl · 10/11/2020 15:40

"I don't get why this function is needed?"

Me neither tbh.

I just look at TIO & watching?

Maybe more useful if on a phone?

Good point about the low visibility of the "mark all as read" button - we'll look at making that more prominent asap. Thanks.
Dddaddy · 10/11/2020 15:40

I hate it. Sorry.

RunningFromInsanity · 10/11/2020 15:41

It’s annoying. I only want to be notified if I’ve got a message or someone has @ me. Not that 20people have commented on a post.

We need the option to filter which notifications we get.

Why not add a turn off notifications option whilst you're at it? Why would you not give your users the option?

People have told you how they feel, but you're just ignoring it Hmm

While it may be a standard feature, it's also standard to be able to turn it off!

We will be accused of not moving with the times and being resistant to change. Grin MN must be the same as every other site apparently. if there is going to be a Like button there had better be a 'Dislike' one too.
PollyRoulson · 10/11/2020 15:44

Please turn them off or give us an option to turn them off

GaryTheDemon · 10/11/2020 15:44

No no no. How do I switch this off?

FlibbertyGiblets · 10/11/2020 15:44

Oh well, at least emails from being atted (@ed) remain switched off as prev chosen by me, so it's not all bad. [Pollyanna face]

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2020 15:45

@ShirleyPhallus

What would be really useful is that notifications are given when posts are posted to old threads that you’ve previously started or commented on.

My “threads you’re on” only lasts a week, so for example, every week I have to refind the Strictly thread as it’s fallen off that list by the time the next week’s episode comes around.

Could that be included as part of the update?

Sure I set mine for 10/12 days so even if a few days late watching something it still shows up
GaryTheDemon · 10/11/2020 15:46

There’s no confusion, the red dot is eye catching and distracting and unnecessary. Super irritation esp if you’ve posted on an active thread.
