How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

It might be standard on other sites but it is also standard for users to be able to turn it off or customise which notifications we see. I think the likely outcome of this for me is missed pms as I will start ignoring the notification button. As my MN emails go to an email address I rarely check (sorry MN, I don't trust you with my main one) I will miss PMs altogether. Which is annoying.

EasilyDepleted · 10/11/2020 16:00

If you hide a thread, say because you lost interest several hundred posts ago will you still get notifications? That would be even more annoying.

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2020 16:00

OK that was a failure.

@Sparklingbrook has just messaged me and there's no message icon.

"Yes I think Facebook had a red dot many years ago and then they changed to an envelope or something?

God I'm confused"

Well yes, there was one thing that appeared denoting messages.

One symbol in a small space is enough for me!Grin

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:02

@EasilyDepleted If you have removed a thread from your watch list you won't get notifications for it.

I had to click on notifications to see if I had a message...

So you think we will just stop noticing the HUGE red circle??? The polite thing to do is to respect you users as adults and give them a choice, not treat them like children who will eventually get used to something if left long enough.

Ummm I don’t like the feature but this reply is straight up rude. It’s a free website and MN have a choice of how to run it, and you have a choice of whether to use it. Berating then for not being polite is somewhat ironic....

I think my PM is one of your 17 notifications-it doesn't seem to differentiate between the two...

Here you are @JanineMumsnet, after they’ve been cleared

Yes definitely.

So anyone intending to ignore the new feature needs to be aware, they probably won't spot new messages.

Flamingopants · 10/11/2020 16:06

I looked for this thread hoping t find a way to switch it off as it’s annoying.
As there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn it off the options seem to be logging out or not posting on any threads.

Thank you - is that different from hiding it? I rarely check my watched list. I hide them so I don't see them in Active any more either, otherwise I'd get sucked back in.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2020 16:06
@Blondeshavemorefun oh no! That shouldn't happen, when you click the icon you should see a drop down with your usual account options and an addition link to your notifications feed. Are you saying that doesn't happen at all for you? If so, what device/browser are you using?

@ShirleyPhallus do you have a screen shot? That shouldn't be happening - it should clear all your notifications.
No. I just get this. And click and nothing

Yes the site is rude but to ignore many posters who have said they don't like the feature and respond to say never mind you will get used to it is rediculous. I'm not asking for the moon I just want an off option so there isn't a distracting red dot flashing up every time I load the page.

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2020 16:07

And to the PP who called it a 'HUGE' red circle

It really isn't.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2020 16:07

@diddl

It's not about hating change per se, but the read dot used to mean that you had a message!
This

I got excited as thought I had a message

@WorraLiberty

It is pretty dominating on a small phone screen. I'm sure it wouldn't be as noticeable on a laptop or bigger screen.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 16:09

I would prefer to know whether the Notification is a PM or something else because I would just ignore the something else then.

The thing is, in the almost 12 years I've been a Mumsnet member, there hasn't been on single change that hasn't made some Mumsnetters moan.

Occasionally with good reason (IMO) but mostly because some of them just didn't like change.

The fuss kicked up over 'Trending' for example was just ridiculous, with some long term members actually threatening to leave 🙄

No wonder MN is so far behind the times with its features when they have to put up with so many complaints over minor changes.

bruffin · 10/11/2020 16:11

I cant use it because the google ads block it and when i click on it nothing happens. For some reason works on mobile but not on PC

WitchesSpelleas · 10/11/2020 16:14

I think it's quite good, but I'm on desktop so it isn't noticeable unless I look for it. I've done 'mark all as read' to get rid of the historical ones.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 16:14

I didn't threaten to leave but I still hate it. 'Most active' made perfect sense. Grin

You're still using dial-up aren't you? Grin

Go on admit it we can wait 15 minutes
