New Android app!

RebeccaMumsnet · 23/12/2016 13:42

Seasons greetings one and all

We're happy to announce our new Talk App for Android is now ready to go and available for download from the Google Play store, just in time for Christmas too. Xmas Grin

As this is our first crack at the Android version, we will be adding more features and updates as we go along. At this stage we'd really appreciate your feedback (good and bad...) about using the app and if it's working for you. Let us know how you get on.

Many thanks to all of our testers. Please delete the test app and download this one instead.

Cheers!

MNHQ

The big Plus sign i meant but it appears you can't post a plus sign

Lweji · 27/12/2016 11:36

The plus sign is too similar to the add post plus sign on the mobile site. It's just confusing.

Does anyone have it working on a device running Android 5?

Cineraria · 28/12/2016 00:16

I really like the app and prefer reading on it. I'm not using it much though as I mainly click through to read some of the threads from the Daily email and the links always take me to the website rather than the app. I'd prefer it if the links would find the app on my phone, like the ones in the emails I get from Amazon and Meetup do, and if possible offer me the choice of which I would prefer to use as default.

Testing...

CointreauVersial · 28/12/2016 13:17

There is a problem on "Threads I'm On" - when you click on one, it takes you to a completely different thread! I think it might be because Threads I'm On list doesn't seem to refresh even when someone has just posted something on one of the threads (i.e. that thread should really go to the top of the list).

So, for example, I just posted on this thread, then to get back to it from Threads I'm On, I just clicked the one at the top of the list (labelled as a random thread about sales shopping) and this is the thread that opened, not the shopping one.

Hope that garble makes sense.

try again

A couple more glitches for you, MNHQ....

  • Whenever you type an ampersand, it cuts the rest of the post off! I twice tried typing M&S, and all the text after the M didn't post (I'm now in the mobile site, so it's working normally).
  • I wanted to go back into the text and add a smiley, but it would only let me put it at the end of the text, even though the cursor was in the right place.

Not sure if I like it. I just posted on a thread and my post appeared 6 times. My apology for that 3 times.
I'm interested to see what happens now....

girlandboy · 29/12/2016 09:13

Ooh, just the one!

OK, I'm posting from the desktop-looking thing via Facebook (have you disabled the mobile-friendly via FB function?).

The app has been a dismal failure for me, I'm afraid. It's cut my posts off, but makes up in quantity (multiple posts). I can't highlight text to copy&paste.

Visually, not tragic, but if I'm IN the Relationships board, for instance, seeing "Relationships - [thread name]" as part of the heading takes up unnecessary space on my phone. Headings in general take up too much space, i feel. And (maybe I just didn't spot how yet, but...) I miss the feature where I can colour my and OP's posts how I like.

A lot of tweaking yet to be done, I feel...

Clankboing · 29/12/2016 18:13

Very good. I'm sure old posts are on it though, as when I go to mumsnet on computer cant see the old ones. Can see lots of new threads on computer but not on the app. Some new ones occasionally.

MoreTeaPenguin · 29/12/2016 19:46

I'm seeing com.android.volley.TimeoutError frustratingly often in the android app. I click an active thread, it goes to the screen with a purple title bar with the name of the thread, waits about 60 seconds (very rough guess) then pops up a little error and just sits there with no thread contents. Not sure how to attach a screenshot...

Hmmm - I posted the above from the app, it appeared to fail to post (showed me an 'oops something has gone wrong' toast text, then a com.android.volley.ServerError), but, now I'm looking in the web UI, appears to have posted twice.

MoreTeaPenguin · 29/12/2016 20:01

Here's a screenshot of the time out I keep getting, and the server error I saw after posting. I'm running android 6.0.1 on a xperia Z3 compact.
