New Android app!

Seasons greetings one and all

We're happy to announce our new Talk App for Android is now ready to go and available for download from the Google Play store, just in time for Christmas too. Xmas Grin

As this is our first crack at the Android version, we will be adding more features and updates as we go along. At this stage we'd really appreciate your feedback (good and bad...) about using the app and if it's working for you. Let us know how you get on.

Many thanks to all of our testers. Please delete the test app and download this one instead.

Cheers!

MNHQ

I like it apart from not being able to bookmark. I have been testing it for a couple of weeks now and have found no problems except the smilies don't always show properly but that could be posters not putting them in properly! Wink

tapdancingmum · 24/12/2016 00:22

Also, on my Ipod when I've looked at a thread it changes colour so I can just scroll past knowing that I've read it. It would be nice if this one could do the same to stop me reading the same thread over as I've forgotten I've already opened it Xmas Wink

SmallBee · 24/12/2016 00:54

Yaaaaaaaay Mumsnet! Downloading now.

80sMum · 24/12/2016 10:39

I just downloaded it and had a quick look at it.

To begin with, it asked me to log in, which is a problem because I can't remember the ridiculously complicated password that I invented during the security breach!

Looking at it briefly from a not logged in viewpoint, I didn't like the look of it. I like the mobile site much better.

Perhaps the app will look better when I have figured out how to log in, so I could then customise it. But as the mobile site works fine on my phone, I will be sticking with that, for the time being at least.

CerealShopper · 24/12/2016 11:19

It doesn't capitalise letters at the beginning of sentences, and the Talk page doesn't update with newest threads when you return to it - you have to physically refresh each time.

CerealShopper · 24/12/2016 11:21

And I'd prefer it if the OP/my username was a much more obviously different colour.

I still cannot log into the app. Have reported it via the app during testing but no one has come back to me.

CerealShopper · 24/12/2016 12:10

Is there any way to distinguish which threads you have already looked at?

DrDreReturns · 24/12/2016 14:11

Can we have an easy way of refreshing the thread we are currently viewing?

CointreauVersial · 24/12/2016 14:39

Ooh, at last! I missed the old app when it died a death, but have now gotten quite used to the mobile site.

I'll report back.

shatteredstudentmum · 24/12/2016 17:03

I actually like the purple. I have major sight issues especially with screens and dark background is much easier.

seems OK so far but will keep having a look round now...

LaLaLolly · 25/12/2016 08:55

Yay for Android App!

Is there a search function I'm missing, please?

MyWineTime · 25/12/2016 20:40

There are absolutely no accessibility features!
I need to be able too enlarge the font.
I would like to have different colour options, I like the purple but there's too much white.

elastamum · 25/12/2016 23:04

Just wanted to see if it will let me post!

RubyGoat · 25/12/2016 23:30

I like that there is an app for Android.
I don't like the white-on-purple text. Hard to see.
I don't like purple at all actually - could we have a choice of a couple of colours - preferably a softer one with black text.
Bookmarks aren't working. If we cannot have pages or jump to the end of threads, bookmarks will be a necessity.
It's not obvious how to move to the end of a page / thread, other than by scrolling, not ideal on a long thread & a tiny phone.
It would be easier to see the OP's posts if the whole thing was highlighted / outlined, rather than just their name.
Text / background ratio seems off. Text size seems ok (to me personally) but there's too much void space around it.
The smilies seem excessively large in comparison to the size of the text.

Looks promising but I won't be using it until some of the issues are improved. I'll keep it installed though.

TartyTart · 26/12/2016 09:06

Loving it!!

Evalina · 26/12/2016 11:31

I have 3 android devices, but can only get the app to work on one of them. The other 2 get the message "Connection failed. Unable to connect with Mumsnet".

It works with my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S6, but not with either of my tablets, which are an Asus 7" and a Lenovo A2 10" tablet. Any ideas why not and is it just me?

Very frustrating as I tend to MN on the tablets more..

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 26/12/2016 13:30

Well, here's hoping! Xmas Smile

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 26/12/2016 16:47

I have tried to log in about 50 times, no joy.

Definitely the right password.

I have tried clearing the cache, I even uninsulated and re-installed the app, and it's still not working

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 26/12/2016 16:48

*un-installed even

Newdad19 · 26/12/2016 17:58

so far so good but a couple of points from me:

  • no auto capitilization at start of sentences
  • no X button when viewing images, had to click about to use back button
sometimesKit · 26/12/2016 21:17

I was a tester and there's a few issues that I reported during testing that are still occurring.
Bookmark and hide would be really useful. It's incredibly frustrating to have to scroll all the way through a long thread to find where you last got to!

I can't post new threads on the app. Tried several times, it won't let me choose which topic to post in (cursor doesn't appear) and if I click the post icon it just crashes and logs me out.

Smileys are still tiny

Could really do with a scroll bar so you can see how far down a thread you are.

Need to be able to either manually mark threads as read, or have the title change colour once you've read it. I have quite a good memory but when there are six AIBU threads entitled "raging at MIL" (maybe slight exaggeration) it's impossible to know which one I've read and which one I haven't.

I like the way it looks though, and I'm really glad, as I said in testing, that app users can now view/post pictures and links!

Thanks. Testing it!

Doublejeopardy · 27/12/2016 11:13
