Message from MNHQ: We're afraid we felt we had to delete this thread as we feel like it has strayed way outside of our Talk Guidelines. We do regard deliberate, malicious misgendering (as opposed to accidental slip ups) as transphobic. Thank you to everyone who took the time to post thoughtfully here. We understand folks will want to talk more about pronouns and trans issues in general on another thread perhaps - but we would ask that you do so in way that doesn't rehash or repeat this thread. ONE poster wanted to discuss pronouns and they won. A thread about women being shut down by transactivists was shut down by a ta.

Fucking brilliant.

AND FOR THE RECORD THE PERSON'S PRONOUNS ARE 'THEY'

A vile misogynist was "misgendered" be being called he, because we can not even discuss who is doing this.. It is he's. It is men.

they was not even a thing 5 years ago. If I today demanded my pronouns be "Vagina owner" would everyone have to respect that?

situated no but there's an identical thread going on in feminism chat that hasn't been shut down yet

QuackDuckQuack · 25/08/2016 00:28

Is this another facet of the post truth era?

OlennasWimple · 25/08/2016 00:28

situated - there were two threads with the same title. The original one was in Feminist Chat, and is still there (at the time of writing), but another one was started in Chat to get some more traffic and raise awareness of what has been happening in Edinburgh uni. That thread was locked earlier today, then reinstated with a load of deletions and some banned posters, but quickly pulled for good afterwards.

situatedknowledge · 25/08/2016 00:29

Thanks Pinky! Must sleep now and hope the remaining threads survive till morning.

Triskaidekaphobic · 25/08/2016 00:30

He has a cock, although we are all supposed to pretend now that he doesn't.

More like we are supposed to pretend that a cock can be a female appendage. Anyone who thinks otherwise, especially lesbians, is a violent transphobic bigot and deserved to be set on fire/raped/murdered/punched in the face (Those are actually things that trans activists have said and threatened women with)

BitOutOfPractice · 25/08/2016 00:31

I'm not an expert at all on these issues but it seems to me that the TAs seem to believe that the rights, and feelings of trans people trump the rights and feelings of everyone else, particularly women.

That they can perpetuate all sorts of offensive bullshit against women (like calling them "cuntscum") and nobody is supposed to react. Yet one person misgendering someone on a largely female forum brings howls of outrage and accusations of transphobia.

And now MN seems to have joined in with that. Silencing women who are upset and offended on the sayso of the TAs. I feel disappointed in MNHQ.

I feel disappointed too.
Whatever you do, do not quote Germaine Greer on transpeople. You would certainly be banned.....

JudyCoolibar · 25/08/2016 00:34

As pointed out elsewhere, my impression was that MN didn't shut down the thread solely for misgendering, but because it descended into some particularly nasty bullying.

BeyondLovesSweetDee · 25/08/2016 00:35

Marking place, though I doubt it'll last the night

venusinscorpio · 25/08/2016 00:35

I'm not an expert at all on these issues

Oh I think you pretty much nailed it with your post. No special expertise needed. It's quite clear to anyone who doesn't have an agenda and does have half a brain cell.

user1471734618 · 25/08/2016 00:36

" particularly nasty bullying. "

really? of whom?

But just to add, I thought your post was great, you put the issues very succinctly.

DeathAnTaxes · 25/08/2016 00:38

This thread is brilliant, lots of women shouting they can't be heard, oh the irony.....oh the irony.....oh th.......

Did you forget the final 'irony' o did it get deleted, because that is what will happen to this thread.

So no, no irony here.

Nope not bullying which I am sure they'd have mentioned. Just because the poster kept saying everyone was bullying them while turning yet another thread in to a conversation about them doesn't make it true

I'm with you deathantaxes it's utterly fucking ridiculous. HE looks like an utter cunt too. With no taste .

This thread is brilliant, lots of women shouting they can't be heard, oh the irony.....oh the irony.....oh th....... and you're clearly not listening to them. Oh the actual ...

MrsToddsShortcut · 25/08/2016 00:46

I suspect an additional pressure from MN is that Ada themself has issued a statement in which they claim to have been suicidal and the abuse they have suffered at the hands of lesbians/women/ TERFS etc has contributed to this. I 'm guessing that MNHQ don't want to be accused of contributing to that in any way.

Edinburgh University have yet to make a formal statement about what action they may or may not take about Ada's tweets so MN may want to try and stay as neutral as possible.

Ironic really, given the lack of consideration Ada has given to the objects of their vile tweets over the last year.

Bogeyface · 25/08/2016 00:47

I cannot believe that that thread was pulled.

The misogynists win again.

How come, if they hate women so much, are they apparently so desperate to become them?!

Rainbunny · 25/08/2016 00:50

I didn't know who Ada Wells was when I saw this thread, I've since googled and OMG. The rise in prominence of people who seem to have nothing but dislike or hate for women but yet wish to be called a woman because they want to claim the identity of the gender they dislike so much? Women are emerging from thousands of years of societal control under men and now some men are coming forward to claim what it is to be a woman and indeed claim that a Lesbian should want to have sex with someone with a penis just because that person has decided he is a woman. This is the most extreme politically correct madness, logic and common sense are far back in the dust it seems. As pp's have said, this is positively Orwellian.

What is the "agenda" here if there is such? A jealousy of the "otherness" of women so therefore they will change and claim what that means? It feels like a desire to conquer and make women submit to what they decide a woman is. Sorry I don't know if I am making any sense but there's just something that feels sinister to me about this, like women are viewed as the enemy. I'm genuinely curious about the underlying psychology in this.

MrsToddsShortcut · 25/08/2016 00:55

rain If you remove the language by which we define ourselves as women, you remove our ability to name our oppression.

Crime stats are already being skewed by this and language around healthcare is already being affected.

These issues/threads are vital because broadly, as a society, we are sleepwalking into a series of legal changes that are deeply harmful to women and girls. And the vast majority are either oblivious, or so busy trying to be nice and inclusive that they can't bring themselves to believe this stuff is real.

But it is real. And people like Ada Wells and their cohorts are successfully silencing us.

BurstBees · 25/08/2016 00:55

Could MNHQ please join this thread for a discussion rather than just pull it and post a deletion message?
