Message from MNHQ: We're afraid we felt we had to delete this thread as we feel like it has strayed way outside of our Talk Guidelines. We do regard deliberate, malicious misgendering (as opposed to accidental slip ups) as transphobic. Thank you to everyone who took the time to post thoughtfully here. We understand folks will want to talk more about pronouns and trans issues in general on another thread perhaps - but we would ask that you do so in way that doesn't rehash or repeat this thread. ONE poster wanted to discuss pronouns and they won. A thread about women being shut down by transactivists was shut down by a ta.

Fucking brilliant.

AND FOR THE RECORD THE PERSON'S PRONOUNS ARE 'THEY'

A vile misogynist was "misgendered" be being called he, because we can not even discuss who is doing this.. It is he's. It is men.

they was not even a thing 5 years ago. If I today demanded my pronouns be "Vagina owner" would everyone have to respect that?

Don't mention the denim vest, I warned special that it counted as a personal attack :(

venusinscorpio · 25/08/2016 00:09

Sadly the many many useful idiots who enable them aren't quite capable of grasping that, so they don't think women should be able to have boundaries.

StrangeLookingParasite · 25/08/2016 00:09

Sorry, also posting in solidarity. Complaining about misgendering this utter arsehole is just looking through the wrong end of the telescope as far as I'm concerned.

sentia · 25/08/2016 00:10

I agree with you OP.

From a biological (ie sex not gender) perspective, we are talking about a man (which is the word I use for a person of the male sex, also common English usage for the same, although contested by some).

And it is perfectly valid and very very important to have a discussion about what gender (ie something inside your head that you identify with) actually is and whether or not it's a good or useful thing to have, and how certain definitions of gender are damaging for women. I think this article makes that case quite well. Pronoun usage and attempted re-definitions of words like "woman" will inevitably be part of that discussion.

MakemineaGandT · 25/08/2016 00:10

askBasil spot on - thank you - you've articulated my thoughts perfectly!

TheGruffaloMother · 25/08/2016 00:10

Women not allowed to discuss an issue that affects women's hard fought for rights again? Pretty standard. Pretty sad that HQ buys into it really.

I agree with OP - great post, Basil.

PinkyOfPie · 25/08/2016 00:13

Seeing as MN will no longer allow gender critical discussions without heavy censorship, if there are any online spaces dominated by women that can discuss this I'd love to know or help set one up, if anyone fancies dropping me a PM

MatildaOfTuscany · 25/08/2016 00:13

Bibbity - the original thread was about the LGBT rep at Edinburgh University, Ada Wells, who has called women with vaginas "cuntscum", got lesbian members of the LGBT thrown out of the society because they have committed the transphobic act of saying they don't want to have sex with lesbians with penises, who has referred to Jewish students as Zios and who (in the act that finally led to Ada's resignation) called for violence against the police. But apparently we can't discuss this because some posts misgendered Ada (by, ironically enough, using Ada's preferred pronouns of "they/their").

DeathAnTaxes · 25/08/2016 00:13

Don't mention the denim vest, I warned special that it counted as a personal attac

Well as far as I know Ada isn't on this thread so it shouldn't be as MN definitely don't threads about slebs and their outfits (thought they tend to be women)

Men are men and I don't see why I should pretend otherwise.

AmysTiara · 25/08/2016 00:15

I agree OP

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 25/08/2016 00:15

wishiwasntme - totally true.

I've been on MN years, and the debate has raged on years - but the more I have read posts from excellent posters like Basil, the more I realised how this whole thing is an onward march to erode women's rights and identity.

Posters like Basil (and many others) are told they are TERFS and told to DIAF on twitter. It's truly outrageous. MN is one of the few places we have been free to read about and have discussion on this topic - most sites have long since banned any discussion at all, as transphobic - and now it seems MN is going the same way.

It is a slow, damaging erosion of womanhood, of what it is to be born a woman.

Lilacpink40 · 25/08/2016 00:15

Estella thanks for confirming this. I didn't see the original thread nor the news about this man.

I'm finding it bizarre and unfair that the original thread was closed because a man may be offended.

PinkyOfPie · 25/08/2016 00:17

The sweet sweet irony is that Ada is using his male privelege not only is to muscle in on women's spaces but also insult them, whilst appropriating their sex.

Another sweet irony is that, after centuries of women fighting tooth and nail - losing families, jobs and even lives - for equal rights, freedom from oppression, breaking down gender barriers and creating safe spaces, certain libfems are annihilating all that to make way for men. Men who wear frocks and think it makes them women. Not only are they making room in safe spaces, they're plumping the fucking cushions for them.

Can I get off this planet please?

OlennasWimple · 25/08/2016 00:20

Great posts, AskBasil

Bibbity s right that the thread had a bit more going on than MNHQ not liking how pp were talking about Ada, though

Rockingaround · 25/08/2016 00:21

Hi all sorry if I'm being really stupid but I just scanned through this as I really don't understand who Ada Wells wants to be/is/doesn't want to be ... "They" Angry said "I'm a lesbian that sucks dick". I honestly don't understand how "they" can represent anyone in the LBGT umbrella, how did they get in! As for MN silencing, it's a huge issue and should be discussed openly without reproach. In response to some of the things Ada has said ... Shock I'm in disbelief ... Of course people will be bloody pissed off and treatment of that poor girl Imogen, just horrendous behaviour all round, HQ jumped the gun there.

In all honesty I don't understand who other than Ada"they" are representing. Is this person mentally stable, id have referred them to the edu psych, I'm completely baffled as "they" just sound very young, naive, high?, confused and unstable.

MakemineaGandT · 25/08/2016 00:22

It leads to nonsense like this: a transgender man seeking election as the NUS Womens Officer. The world has gone mad!

user1471510720 · 25/08/2016 00:23

This thread is brilliant, lots of women shouting they can't be heard, oh the irony.....oh the irony.....oh th.......

situatedknowledge · 25/08/2016 00:24

Has the original thread just reappeared? Or have I lost the plot?

user1471734618 · 25/08/2016 00:24

" In all honesty I don't understand who other than Ada"they" are representing. "

Interesting point - they seem to representing some new (old) agenda to get women to shut up. and MN is happily joining in.
