Message from MNHQ: We're afraid we felt we had to delete this thread as we feel like it has strayed way outside of our Talk Guidelines. We do regard deliberate, malicious misgendering (as opposed to accidental slip ups) as transphobic. Thank you to everyone who took the time to post thoughtfully here. We understand folks will want to talk more about pronouns and trans issues in general on another thread perhaps - but we would ask that you do so in way that doesn't rehash or repeat this thread. ONE poster wanted to discuss pronouns and they won. A thread about women being shut down by transactivists was shut down by a ta.

Fucking brilliant.

AND FOR THE RECORD THE PERSON'S PRONOUNS ARE 'THEY'

A vile misogynist was "misgendered" be being called he, because we can not even discuss who is doing this.. It is he's. It is men.

they was not even a thing 5 years ago. If I today demanded my pronouns be "Vagina owner" would everyone have to respect that?

I stand in solidarity. I have taken to saving pages to read offline because I have noticed this trend.

ohfourfoxache · 24/08/2016 23:57

Oh for the love of God, this is getting ridiculous Angry

user1471734618 · 24/08/2016 23:57

" It still remains grammatically incorrect, however, particularly in written English. "

I disagree, but let's not get too sidetracked by pronouns....

DeathAnTaxes · 24/08/2016 23:58

Alex has shit scarves and ada has a denim vest.

It's fucking shocking.

AskBasil sums up perfectly why we shouldn't pander to this pronoun nonsense.

MaudGonneMad · 24/08/2016 23:58

That's a great post AskBasil

user1471734618 · 25/08/2016 00:00

the point seems to be, it is OK for a man to slip on a frock and 'identify as a woman' and be as vile and insulting and exclusive as they like to real women, including using the word 'cuntscum' towards us, but we must be very very careful to always use the correct pronoun when we talk about them, in case they are offended? or any messages will be deleted.
Is that the case?

AskBasil · 25/08/2016 00:00

And actually it's an issue for anyone who values truth and reality and believes that the interests of truth have some validity. Of course they have to be balanced, with people's feelings, but to just say that we won't even consider truth as having any value at all, is just not right.

And I'm sure my previous post will be deleted.

FoxtonFoxFace · 25/08/2016 00:00

Very well said Basil

MatildaOfTuscany · 25/08/2016 00:01

Stands up to give Basil an ovation. Absolutely right, every last word of it.

venusinscorpio · 25/08/2016 00:01

Is anyone else sick of having their sex appropriated.

Yes. I am heartily fucking sick of it. It wouldn't be tolerated by any other group. I am not going to say I as a woman have anything whatsoever in common with the average trans woman beyond our shared humanity, as I don't. Their issues are one huge derail for feminism and women's rights.

Karoleann · 25/08/2016 00:03

Well done askbasil, the whole thing is utter nonsense.

DeathAnTaxes · 25/08/2016 00:03

Why does no one care how offended we are?

Is it because of all our cis privilege?

OP posts:
EstellaHavisham · 25/08/2016 00:05

I think I'm a bit in love with Basil

Laniakea · 25/08/2016 00:05

Why does no one care how offended we are?

the obvious answer would be because we aren't men.

Effic · 25/08/2016 00:07

Thank you Askbasil. I'm going to quickly copy your post and save it before it is deleted as it sums up exactly how I feel but am not eloquent enough to explain.

user1471734618 · 25/08/2016 00:07

Basil said it well.
On a forum called 'Mumsnet' women will be banned if they do not call a man with a beard 'she'. OK.

venusinscorpio · 25/08/2016 00:07

Great post Basil. I also think it's abusive and that some of these men get off on it.

brasty · 25/08/2016 00:07

Isn't the correct term "non men"?

cbigs · 25/08/2016 00:07

Eugh .... This non binary wank really really irritates the shit out of me. Sad everything is such hard fucking work nowadays . Sorry not useful op but posting in support .

Lilacpink40 · 25/08/2016 00:07

Thanks DeathAn I now understand that this is a man, who has bullied at least one woman and made derogatory comments about all women, asking to be referred to as a women with 'they' as a pronoun.

I don't understand why a thread about this would be closed down. He has the freedom of speech to be inappropriate and wish to be grammatically incorrect, but it's not ok to discuss this?

What does he have, or do, to make him so special?

AskBasil · 25/08/2016 00:07

The whole trans movement has shown women just how far we have to go, to be considered equal human beings with men.

It is a huge sleight of (backlash) hand.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 25/08/2016 00:07

So no one is going to fill in a bit ...

I'll be off to bed then.

wishiwasntme · 25/08/2016 00:07

Your post is shocking basil.

I had no idea things had become so skewed. It feels like women's rights have gone backwards and our feelings are no longer considered in case it upsets or offends others. I have daughters and it makes me worried for their futures.

MatildaOfTuscany · 25/08/2016 00:09

I have saved this page too, for when it inevitably goes "poof". I'm feeling sad - this feels like the beginning of the end. MN was one of the very few publicly open spaces on the web where the crazy excesses of transactivists could be discussed, and one of the very few that was female-dominated, but I feel like there's a huge shift in editorial policy going on and we are no longer going to be able to talk about this.

For the record, I think Germaine Greer was right!
