The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

They are normal sized on my iPad and big and really ugly on my MacBook.

TheSpottedZebra · 07/12/2015 18:25

✊ I think they're a bit common. And it will be glittery shite and tickers next. 🐛
And all the creatures have inane expressions and that pisses me off.

TheSpottedZebra · 07/12/2015 18:26

And they don't quite translate from device to MN screen, so could be easily misconstrued.

Nanofone · 07/12/2015 18:28

Talk about first world problems! Who cares?

thatstoast · 07/12/2015 18:28

I don't like them and they look especially awful on my mobile devices.

ShelaghTurner · 07/12/2015 18:30

Love them. Wouldn't use in thread titles though

Shirkingfromhome · 07/12/2015 18:30

I 💕 them (but then I'm a relative newby). I've wasted a good half an hour on a brilliant pictionary thread on here today. Yesterday that wouldn't have been possible! Can we keep them please MNHQ 👏👏👏

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2015 18:31

They were small on my laptop and a bit annoying then at some point today they went HUGE. And then some appear as microscopic black blobs I can't make out.

I don't know how to do them but don't think they add anything to the MN experience. I agree that they might appeal to teenagers.

InQuiteAChristmasPickle · 07/12/2015 18:39

I love being able to use them! 👍

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2015 18:41

That one on the end of your post above Pickle just looks like a black indecipherable blob to me on my laptop. Sad

MagpieCursedTea · 07/12/2015 18:44

I prefer just having the standard MN ones, non of these new fangled young people ones.
Although, in my app I don't have all the MN ones that others seem to have if that makes sense. For example, the only Christmas one I have is this [santa]

Thurlow · 07/12/2015 19:15

On my laptop they are small and black and so don't change things much.

On my phone they're bloody enormous and coloured and look awful like NM tickers

I can see why they might make a fun pictionary thread, but they don't look good on a standard thread.

I thought MN was about conversation?

Thurlow · 07/12/2015 19:18

I just think if they don't work on all technologies, it's a bit strange having them.

Plus I have NO idea how to create them...

YakTriangle · 07/12/2015 19:33

Anyone know how I make them work on the iPhone app?

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2015 19:36

I agree Thurlow, and i have no idea if I can do them or not but assume not as I can't see a lot of them properly. Confused

They are having a whale of a time on the Pictionary thread.

Not madly keen on all the new ones. Not a clue what most of them mean and almost never MN on my phone so no use to me anyway (miserable cow emoji).

SauvignonBlanche · 07/12/2015 19:57

I'm voting for get rid and that's even before I've heard how they affect MNers with a VI.

Icanseeclearly · 07/12/2015 19:57

The new ones look awful. Really tacky and don't suit the rest of the site at all imo.

LineyReborn · 07/12/2015 19:57

I think they are fucking shite but I am always wrong, and on a cup-and-string device anyway.

They look really childish and crass to me but other people may be viewing Freda Kahlo.

Actually I might like to have a Picasso interpretive filter, melted face era.

Stasie · 07/12/2015 20:02

I can see how they might bring in the wrong, ahem, type...

I mean what with the sex forum and now this, we'll probably be overrun by a combination of preverts and huns. And young people.

Shock

So, uhh, maybe you should keep them then? Grin

Pointlessfan · 07/12/2015 20:05

I'm enjoying Christmassy ones but I agree that I don't want to end up with sparkly tickers etc.

AlisonWunderland · 07/12/2015 20:08

I'd dump the emoji in return for the ability to edit within a 5 minute window
