The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

Yes, it's called personal opinion

You asked the question, I answered it.

CoteDAzur · 31/12/2015 14:48

Yes, everyone's got one of those. I gave mine, too.

Maybe you need a short fuse emoji.

TiggyD · 31/12/2015 16:30

That big face says to me "Now the washing instructions have washed off I need to remember whether I'm supposed to wash this on 60 or 40?" It's pondering things that have happened long ago. It's wistful. Dreamy. It's a happy go lucky, dare I say it, Netmums kind of face. I much prefer the world weary, cynical and pessimistic Hmm we already have.

And why do you feel the need to say I'm agreeing with women Cote? Hmm.

See? Much better.

I sometimes use Hmm as a self deprecating thing when I am describing something stupid I have done.

But on the whole is is used on MN as an eye rolly expression of annoyance or irritation.

But then apparently Smile is sarky.

CloakAndJagger · 31/12/2015 18:18

🍍 I rather like the emojis. They sit rather nicely alongside the regular -Grin etc and you don't have to arse and with typing in [ grin ].

Timea change and move. The world won't end because I can post a 🍍.

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2015 18:19

What is that Cloak?

CloakAndJagger · 31/12/2015 18:33

Pineapple 🍍 I'm quite partial to it.

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2015 18:34

Oh right. Thought the green stuff was hair. Confused Can't think of any time on MN when a pineapple emoji would have come in handy though.

magimedi · 04/01/2016 09:33

Please can they go? Half of them just show up as black boxes for me anyhow & they are not conducive to conversation.

I spotted on where they used a flipping emoji in the thread title, but proper MN ones in the thread.

I hope MNHQ decide to do away with them altogether.

But can they at least be removed from thread titles?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/01/2016 10:26

I quite like them. That said, they show on all my devices - they differ slightly from iOS to Android, but do show.

I think it'd be a losing battle trying to stop third-party emojis working on here forever more, so it might be a better use of energy to try and ensure that the majority of users can see them instead.

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2016 10:38

They aren't really worth seeing though. They add nothing.

reni2 · 04/01/2016 11:24

I think most mnetters will just add a mental dunce cap to any user who uses them by the sound of it. HQ said see how everybody feels in the new year, has anyone changed their opinion since December?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/01/2016 11:32

This^ I automatically hide threads that have emojis in the title, and I skip through any post with them too.

CloakAndJagger · 04/01/2016 11:43

I can Sparklingbrook. How about "LTB but only after you've shoved a 🍍 up his unrepentant arse".

Grin
Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2016 12:11

Um it's a no fro me Cloak. Sad

I agree reni2.

reni2 · 04/01/2016 12:22

I just feel for new mnetters, they won't know the consensus is no emojis. Although most notice hunning and hugging are rare so don't do it.

I admitted to owning loo brushes before realising they were verboten

Lweji · 04/01/2016 13:04

loo brushes are not verboten, no matter what some weird people try to impose

SauvignonBlanche · 04/01/2016 13:38

Christmas is almost over please can we now get rid of them?
I can see them, (but don't want to) God know how annoying they are for those that can't.

Given that Tech is on the case of blocking emojiis from thread titles

Can s/he please block them site wide?
