The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

The nail painting emoji looked like a crane dangling a box, to me. Confused

MNHQ, I still won't like them in the New Year. Much classier to have your own set, doncha think? Wink

reni2 · 15/12/2015 12:25

Or maybe if we can't beat them we could join them. May I have a heart shaped dot for the i in reni and a swan shaped 2, please?

Oh blimey. They are escaping into thread titles now. WARNING there are a lot of emojis within the thread too. Plus some teeny squares.

Adding a new column and furiously typing names into my mn spreadsheet.

Columns so far: GFs, trolls, socks and Emoj

CantSee4Looking · 15/12/2015 14:58

I tend to be a bit over excitable. I tend to use the mn emojii a bit on the heavy side but the peppering of emojii all over the place is starting to make my teeth itch. And I am already sick of posts that look like this one. There has been an explosion of squares everywhere. I do wonder if HQ have got bored of the hassle of running the site and are deliberately trying to make it implode.

Agreed - it's ridiculous if not everyone can see them! And I can't see some of them, because also on a laptop.

SauvignonBlanche · 15/12/2015 17:53

Good point, Maryz, some threads must be full of blank posts.

SoupDragon · 15/12/2015 18:05

They won't be blank though, they will have some highly informative black squares in.

Fiderer · 15/12/2015 18:13

I don't understand why some posts on some threads (not a reference to a specific thread - has often happened though) weren't deleted because the thread wouldn't have made sense any more.

But we can have squares & have no idea what the poster meant so the thread makes no sense.

Are we supposed to become cryptologists?

I think the way to kill the emojis is to ask for clarification every single time, like a broken record so it becomes pointless to use them.

When a poster has to write out "the first emoji was a smiling face with ruddy cheeks, the second was a turd, the third was a green heart and I meant to signify that this situation is embarrassing and also a bit shit but I am glad it is resolved now" it might make them think twice next time.

Fiderer · 15/12/2015 19:01

Nice idea *reni" but if the posters don't return to the thread it won't help.

Plus posters who do like them will ignore the requests anyway.

Am joining you in the gin.

Fiderer · 15/12/2015 19:02

reni even

Lweji · 15/12/2015 19:43

Surely the heart and turd emojis will be in angst, fights and humour?

Surprisingly not in the ones I'm in.
I only do high brow boring/old fashioned threads, apparently.

Lweji · 15/12/2015 19:44

Sparklingbrook
That Christmas thread was from the first days of available emojis. It doesn't count.

ScrambledSmegs · 15/12/2015 19:53

I can't see them on my phone. They aren't squares but they're just too small. So meh. I swerve any thread that's got too many on.

They're pretty juvenile but I suppose we want to make it easier for the puerile trolls Smile

IPityThePontipines · 16/12/2015 01:26

This might a be against the rules, but I just wanted to cheer some oldtimers up

Beesimo now comments at The Guardian and it's absolute gold:
