The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

"Monitoring over the holidays" = waiting and hoping people get used to them and stop moaning. This thread was pretty clearly a resounding no, so clearly MNHQ don't want to reverse the decision, and were hoping this thread would go the other way.

We'll see how it turns out, I think they might just become a bit embarrassing. I haven't seen many of the posters I know to give measured and intelligent advice pepper their posts with them too much outside of this thread for demonstration of course.

One very important prerequisite for debate is that people understand each other and I simply cannot work out what a dandelion signifies compared to a tulip or rose.

The nail painting emoji was interpreted on this thread as a gun firing, a bar chart, a sandcastle with a wonky flag or boredom. We will have to stick to saying "I am painting my nails"

CantSee4Looking · 15/12/2015 09:19

Are the original mn emojii going to stay or is the long term plan to get rid of them? Some of use are not using smart phones or tablets so the only emojii choices we have are the mn ones.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2015 09:22

Yes the MN ones are staying so we can use them or the teenager's ones. The problem is like you point out Cant some people can't use the other ones and some can't even see them. Seems a bit odd to have something not available to all.

On my laptop a lot of the emojis are teeny tiny squares.

Lweji · 15/12/2015 10:18

Again, I really doubt they will catch up on MN apart from the odd thread (pictionary) or post, because we know some people can't see them, and for the most part they are unnecessary.
Even MN smileys are used sparingly.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2015 10:21

I have seen a fair few threads featuring the one that has hearts for eyes. Hmm

Lweji · 15/12/2015 10:31

What threads are you on? feeling like I'm missing something Or maybe for me they are just squares

reni2 · 15/12/2015 10:34

Hearts for eyes are every bit as lovely as posters of 2 swans making a heart shape with their necks in front of a sunset.

Lweji · 15/12/2015 10:51

I'm definitely on the wrong threads.
I only do angst (Relationships), fights (climate change) and humour (Homeland)

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2015 10:53

I have 11 topics not hidden. Grin They must be in Chat. as soon as one appears I just think uh-oh it's one of those posters. Grin

reni2 · 15/12/2015 10:53

Surely the heart and turd emojis will be in angst, fights and humour? Great topic titles btw.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2015 10:55

I can maybe cope with just one on it's own but when there's a whole row it's hide the thread time.

reni2 · 15/12/2015 11:12

That would be where the hide a poster button would come in handy, Sparkling.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2015 11:45

Reni I am hoping we are getting closer to that option. I really am.

YY Maryz they can't possibly say no now surely?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 15/12/2015 12:08

Oh that thread. My eyes. Very pleased for her and everything, but it's just not Mumsnet.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2015 12:10

I think those that use the emojis tend to be a bit excitable.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 15/12/2015 12:17

I have a relative that texts me with nearly every word being replaced by emojis...I do think it's replacing language somewhat. We're going back to ancient Egypt I guess. Confused

BertieBotts · 15/12/2015 12:19

Yes! Hide! Hide poster! It would be the PERFECT antidote.

BertieBotts · 15/12/2015 12:20

Those who looooooove (heartface) emojis can continue to use them to their hearts' content and us old duffers can just disappear them and everybody will be happy.

And we can still have pictionary threads in chat.
