The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

Oh God. Why would anyone even care about that stuff?

reni2 · 14/12/2015 15:51

Are you saying you are not desperate to know how many minutes an internet stranger such as myself has been a mum, LineyReborn?

PurpleHairAndPearls · 14/12/2015 16:03

Tickets give me the sick.

PurpleHairAndPearls · 14/12/2015 16:04

Tickers even. See, even auto correct hates tickers

LineyReborn · 14/12/2015 16:06

reni I'd want one that said how long I'd been on my period - 'Liney has been menstruating now for 4days7hours6mins' - and have it decorated with blood and wine bottles.

reni2 · 14/12/2015 16:08

Twinkling tampons? Surely they are somewhere among the new emoji atrocities?

VikingVolva · 14/12/2015 16:09

Or tickers by those undergoing the perimenopause, just to educate the young'uns about what menstrual chaos can be like?

Seconds since last abbatoir moment 36

AuntieStella · 14/12/2015 16:10

'Twinkling tampons? Surely they are somewhere among the new emoji atrocities?'

Tinsel instead of string. For the Christmas period.

reni2 · 14/12/2015 16:11

32min 48sec since the start of the homework stand-off in Reni's house

reni2 · 14/12/2015 16:15

Tinsel instead of string.

Itch!

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/12/2015 16:47

1 hour 15 minutes until the first glass of Wine for Bear

Lweji · 14/12/2015 16:51

And I still want an irony emoticon

Isn't that what Wink and Grin are used for?

Lweji · 14/12/2015 16:53

Ups. Forgot

2h 8min till football practice

LineyReborn · 14/12/2015 18:25

Yes we need abattoir emoticons. And Noah watching the Ark rising up on a sea of frothing blood.

LineyReborn · 14/12/2015 18:41

And can we have one with guesstimates of the IQs of other posters.

SauvignonBlanche · 14/12/2015 18:49

I can assure you now RebbeccaMumsnet, that I still won't be happy about them in the New Year.

LineyReborn · 14/12/2015 18:55

I'm with you, Sauvignon.

I think it'll be crap.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2015 18:57

So we are stuck with them over Christmas then? Sad

LineyReborn · 14/12/2015 19:00

Looks like it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/12/2015 19:01

It'll be animated tickers in the new year, mark my words Sad

Tech will "accidentally" turn them on, and "rolling back will be a fair bit of work"...

LineyReborn · 14/12/2015 19:07

Although tbh, there are so many arseholes now on MN (not you cherubs on here obvs) that I don't know if I can be arsed with it all anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2015 19:12

IonaMN clearly stated in the OP 'we can get rid of them again'. The 'can' was bolded even.

I think underwear must be burning. Angry

reni2 · 14/12/2015 19:24

Just popped over to nm and opened a couple of random threads to see if they have these emojis. Nope. Threads look sober and the tickers of the olden days appear gone, too. They probably rejected the emojis as too mnetty.

Fiderer · 14/12/2015 19:27

Folks don't seem that keen now so am not sure what monitoring over the holidays will change.

Also not sure how much 'monitoring' will be doable over the holidays.

kinkytoes · 14/12/2015 20:56

Well I'll still hate them in the new year, MNHQ, promise!

Angry
