I guess if they were not hackers they would be like a certain person I've had to deal with at work a lot lately. Thief, fraudster, terminally angry, paranoid, only content to bully and shout at people who are young, vulnerable. Absent father not paying for their kids. Chucks a blind rage over imagined slights despite his many, many proven glaring flaws. There's sooooo many disenfranchised, egotistical Jeffries out there, except now their on our internetz and calling the police swat teams out on their imagined enemies.

Pipbin - Yes. But I assume they didn't have the capabilities to do anywhere financial like banks or AM. Hacking an online shop or somewhere is probably fun, but the financial is presumably tough to get to and the DDOS makes little impact. There aren't actually many places that are high profile like MN, not super protected like Facebook and aren't where the hackers want to play themselves. I'd imagine the list narrows itself pretty fast. Then they get the giggles at the idea of annoying a load of mums.

Can I remind you guys that they are watching this thread so be careful what details you reveal like Twitter info etc.

Exactly. Mums, are in general, female. Like I said, it's not 'let's shut the women up'. It's 'pfft, silly yummy mummies, let's piss them off'.

That's what I was wondering. There has been talk of some of MN using Gransnet whilst MN offline. Now when I tried to log into Gransnet the http was insecure as it did not say https. I also had the page logged out by windows with a message saying that it was unsafe. I haven't tried logging in since as not sure what is going on.

Im not sure I explained that properly. I meant that maybe they were unaware of Gransnet but as they have been mentioned on this thread that possibly they have now found them.

Ark - it was clear who was being threatened. We don't know what happened. But lots of things could have that they chose to keep quiet. Including events or ways of preventing them.

My eldest asked how MN was then told me "it will be back down in a day or two" before going back to minecraft. Maybe it's him? I asked how he would start his attack but he didn't go for the simplest ways I know of so I can put that out of my head

Or absolutely nothing happened I should add. That is also a possibility.

I know this is a bit far-reaching but there's been a fair few of these type of things lately - the Pentagon was hacked into in late July and info was stolen, apparently they had to deal with DDOS too , Ashley Madison (blackmail??) and Mumsnet. I don't think people should underestimate the power that some might attribute to the value of ordinary people from all over the place being able to talk to each other and gather information. I really think that's what is under attack here - the pissed off Dad thing is just a ruse.

Has any major news website written about this? Seems worthy of news and also of a decent critique from a good comment journo.

Can I be a dodo and ask how I can tell if I am looking at an https site from my mobile (not the app, on safari on an iPhone). When I tap in the address bar it only shows www. etc as the address. Thank you

No https and no padlock- is it not secure- I'm on iPhone and ios7 I think.
