FWR split continued

We have decided to start a new thread about this as the other thread was near capacity and taking a while to load.

Here is Justine's post from earlier on

We can give a Radical Feminism topic a go if that's what people want and see if it works. Obviously we need to be crystal clear that no one is obliged to post in one particular place and no one should feel excluded from any topic but we could test it out, and see if it helps resolve tensions. We'll do that in the next few days.

There are a couple of other things to think about as well.

First, those who come onto FWR to derail and inflame. We acknowledge that we have been too slow in the past to spot these posters for what they were. We're sorry about that and hope we're a lot quicker at dealing with them now. We're all for opinions but we do draw the line at posters whose only obvious intent is to goad.

And secondly, this idea that FWR can be an unwelcoming place to those who aren't following the 'party line'. Judging by posts on recent threads and by our inbox this is a view of a significant number of Mumsnetters and obviously that's not a healthy situation. Mumsnet is a place for discussion and for diverse opinion and it's the exchange of ideas and tolerance of differing opinions that makes it the board it is.

We do hope threads like this help to clear the air a bit and remind everyone that, whatever the differences of opinion, the FWR board will only ever be the stimulating, thought-provoking, enriching place we'd all like it to be if people feel that they can express themselves without being jumped on.

Please do continue to let us know your thoughts.

Well, we differ on the likely outcome then, dittany.

Hullygully · 29/06/2012 18:57

I have an idea.

How about if everyone says what they want.

ie "I want...." (without any don't-wants/complaints about others iyswim)

We see what all the answers are and see if something can be drawn from them?

VictorGollancz · 29/06/2012 18:57

Er, I haven't read past Justine's post.

I don't think there should be a support forum. Rape myths are rape myths, whether they are stated to a rape survivor or not. I said what I said to point out that ALL feminists have common ground, one of which is that we'll support rape survivors - but we're not a specialist place for that! The risk of setting ourselves up as some sort of knowledgable support service has the potential to go so, so bad.

And also to point out that this 'anti-feminist' and 'you have no place on this forum' happen so bloody rarely I can't believe it's a point for discussion.

I don't want the board to be split. I like it as it is. I read a lot of feminist boards and spaces and FWR is unique in its mish-mash of voices. I like the blend.

no, you asked for the name change which prompted all the rest, no?

Huansagain · 29/06/2012 19:00

I want a Chicken Kebab.

glasgowwean · 29/06/2012 19:00

I want.....not this ^

I suspect the reason FWR is a bit more relaxed at the moment is because the arguing is taking place over here instead

Eh?

What is bs?

ChickensHaveNoLips · 29/06/2012 19:03

I thought that, glasgowwean.

Pan · 29/06/2012 19:03

bull shit, hully.

Pan · 29/06/2012 19:05

I mean, that's what it stands for not what you are saying is BS - incase anyone's reading and comprehension skills are ebbing this evening.

OliviaLMumsnet · 29/06/2012 19:05

@JustineMumsnet

Ok I'm very sorry but I'm going to have to check out for a bit. OliviaMN is on tonight though, so we're all good.

I am here btw just chucking chillun in bath and stocking up on gin

SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 19:08

What exactly is wrong with setting up a topic where specific views can be discussed by like-minded people?

HesterBurnitall · 29/06/2012 19:09

Is this all some personal thing that the rest of us unimportant posters are unaware of? Hully, I don't understand your line of questioning with Dittany. This wasn't her idea, she didn't request it, it's aimed at marginalizing her and her, apparent, followers. It's got to feel pretty crap to have this happen, be publicly named a problem and discussed like this. How doesn't fit into the PARD paradigm to push like this?

I think I'm going to step away for a while. This whole thing is like a public shaming. It's got nothing to do with open debate.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 29/06/2012 19:12

Hester, all this started from a thread about renaming the section, started by dittany. Then someone suggested a new section from that thread.

Prolesworth · 29/06/2012 19:14

I agree with Hester. This is hideous.

Pan · 29/06/2012 19:14

Hester - I think if you scratch very lightly at the surface of all of this I think you'll probably find it is a lot to do with personalities, attitudes and posting styles, rather than the politics involved. Which is unfortunate but a bit predictable.

AyeRobot · 29/06/2012 19:15

What about an Equalist board?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 29/06/2012 19:16

Just another vote for three sections -

cafe - general discussion including rolling newbie question threads

feminist support - not just for rape or dv survivors but for anyone looking for woman-centred support for a problem.

feminist theory - I think this would really help people not to take things so personally. Could it be merged with feminist books?

Really, last post, but Hmmm, Wickety's thread calls for the rad-fem minority to be split off so they feel safe and everybody else will be free from their bullying and hounding. MN have publicly endorsed that stance. You may link it to Dittany's thread about renaming if you wish.

EclecticShock · 29/06/2012 19:18

"Add message | Report | Message poster dittany Fri 29-Jun-12 18:51:54
No I asked for the other section that Wickety was suggesting to be named that. As things seemed to be going her way, which interestingly they have."

This is why the board doesn't work, we a constantly pitted against each other, in posts like the one above. Playground politics.
