I wish there was a like button for mmelindor's post.

We looked after a tortoise for a week for a neighbour during the summer holidays. They are surprisingly hard work let me tell you!

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/11/2011 19:13

When I was a child you could get tortoises from the petshop for about a £1.00.
And they'd stick them in a brown paper bag, with no information whatsoever.
My tortoise was called Toby, my sister's was Topsy and my brother's was Amos.
They all only lived about five years, how times have changed.
Grin

Are we still waiting for a decision then? I thought DBF/Val had been permanently banned, and that was that?

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 08/11/2011 19:14

My tortoise is Slovakian? He isnt illegal, he came with a licence? hope I havent been miss-sold a poor trafficked tortoise :(

One of my lottery dreams is to have a colony of tortoises.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/11/2011 19:19

Beyond, I'm not sure if all tortoises are illegal to import but this suggests you may have been conned.

fruitshootsandheaves · 08/11/2011 19:20

we found a tortoise once. He escaped from up the road. His name, Humphy was painted on his shell. We found out his real name was Humphrey but it was too long to fit on his shell!

PacificDogwood · 08/11/2011 19:21

Decisions, please, Justine or whoever is het tonight

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 08/11/2011 19:22

Tortoises can be imported/exported as long as they have the right paperwork. For many breeds, this is a CITES certificate.

Elibean · 08/11/2011 19:24

Thing is, Mary and others, DBF is one of the people who could help those going to the DH for help. Actually, she is one of the people who do help many - me included, though she didn't have to stay up till 2am rehousing my dog, something she does for many.
She has also been someone who scares/upsets many posters or would-be posters.
If there were a way of managing the situation so that the DogHouse 'community' - all of it, not just the rescuers - could grow and flourish healthily, without excluding DBF or anyone else, that would be ideal: then the best possible expertise would be available, and most people would be happy to ask for help. I don't know if there is a way of doing that, but I do think it is worth talking and talking and thinking and trying things out in case there is - rather than exclusion.

I would say the same in a school situation, or a family situation, or just about any other group situation where an individual has broken rules or acted innappropriately, especially where that individual also has intrinsic worth as a member of that group, and lots to offer. Boundaries yes, bans? A very sad last resort in dire straits.

For many breeds, this is a CITES certificate.
...which can apparently be dodgy according to my link.

It seems that we need to advise potential tortoise owners to only buy from a reputable breeder or from a rescue.

Shit, sorry to bring sad reality to the lovely world of tortoises. Sad

Or they could, possibly, announce some new measures - some new boundaries, or ways of making existing ones clearer.

I agree though, Maryz, why would they announce 'ok' or 'not ok' except to DBF? Indeed.
