I reckon they're going to keep her out for the foreseeable.

Its a pity (though I can understand the pros and cons of this). You know, I can't think of anyone else who gets so many cries for help explicitly directed to her - theres a 'Val/DBF...' titled thread going on now (fortunately others are helping instead).

The emphasis on rehoming and rescue in the Doghouse has been, in the main a very positive thing.

Purely by coincidence I came to the section having rehomed an ancient Staffie from a no kill rescue - I didn't do it because I'd been told to, just because his plight made me cry. He had been rounded up, taken to the pound, was the only dog that another rescue ( one that advertises "never puts a healthy dog down" ) did not take and he was swept to safety at the last minute by the rescue I got him from. I felt this was the way to go about dog ownership - win win - he gets a really good home, I get a really lovely well trained dog and there is one less dog in a bin bag. I felt immensely angry when a foolish colleague bred from her cross breed for the experience it gave her children, produced 8 dogs and sold them for £180 each, commenting it was a nice little earner for her holidays. But what really; staggered me was that everyone who worked with me cooed over these puppies and congratulated her on what she had done! There is the most frightening and foolish ignorance on this subject.

From what I can see ( and I read Doghouse every day and have read all the threads referred to on here in full ) DBF was her usual forthright but co;ntained self in these matters and most certainly does not deserve to be banned, I hope it will be recinded, and I'm hoping there will be some serious press interest soon to put into context all DBFs sterling work against the petty hectoring she has faced.

MNHQ really should agree to a sticky in the section to deal with the senisble aquisition of a dog/puppy. The facts of life for all dogs today - there are plenty of pedigrees in the pounds too. Also the importance of rehoming in a responsible way.

If DBF does not come back those of us who share her views must promote them ( sensibly and politely) in th einterests of animal welfare.

pinot the just pretend to be slow and sluggish. They are viscious little things.

My tortoise (that I looked after in a shop) got stolen - 'they' said it had died, but I found out a few years later that someone had taken it home as it was worth a lot of money by this time. That person got fired, but I never got my tortoise back. I was the only one he didnt bite.

He was a bastard too.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 08/11/2011 19:38

:( my poor George. He did come from a (known) reputable breeder though, same person I got my snakes from, so fingers crossed nothing dodgy went on!

ItsonlymeMrsDB · 08/11/2011 19:40

I was told that tortoises are a horrible pet to buy for someone.

Because they live so long. And you only see them some of the time.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Grin

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 08/11/2011 19:40

beyond Wink are you sure it is a tortoise and not a fat snake?

Pinot · 08/11/2011 19:40

Jax that is a sorry tale.

I hope everyone learns from this.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 08/11/2011 19:41

Anyhoo - bring back DBF

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 08/11/2011 19:42

pinot thank you Tis a true story y'know.

I did look into tortoise rescue but they are as militant as some doggy people! Grin

TheSkiingGardener · 08/11/2011 19:43

I had a tortoise that ran away and a rabbit that hopped it.

I no have fish, they can't escape.

Pinot · 08/11/2011 19:43

I have a corn snake. Well DS2 does.

It's called Houdini as it escaped after 6 days and we lost it for 4 months. True story.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 08/11/2011 19:44

where did the snake go Pinot? 4 months... do you have mice in your house? how did it survive?

Maybe we should take our little conversation to pets corner? Blush before we get shouted at from mn police.

TheSkiingGardener · 08/11/2011 19:44

Now rather

Oh my. I couldn't ever have a snake in the house.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 08/11/2011 19:48

oh, oh, oh me too Pinot!

They are excellent escapologists. Yoshi went AWOL for a week once.

Jax, they can survive for months on air.

I haven't posted on here because I missed the thread last night so didn't feel like I could add anything without knowing what happened.

However, I have now read a copy of it from the other forum and feel like I can comment on it.

Where do I start?!

TLES has form, we all know that, everything is a drama and mostly a fantasty rather than reality - she lives in a dream world and it makes me so mad that she insults our intelligence by expecting us to believe all the make believe stories and lies.

DBF - yes we all know she has strong views, and who can blame her? I actually agree with a lot of her views but can understand why she has so much passion for her subject. I can understand why she would be riled on that thread when she knew TLES was blatantly lying to her (again), and posted the proof of that.

I don't post in the DH but do have a look in sometimes. DBF has always come across as somebody who is willing to help anyone who has any concerns or questions and she does that without any personal feelings towards the posters. On the thread last night she was still offering help despite her feelings towards TLES.

I have only ever seen one post where DBF was a bit rude and would only accept her own view. It wasn't anything major at all, just something that stood out to me on that one thread. Considering the hundreds of posts she makes I don't feel like this is unexpected at all, infact it is a bloody good record!

However, I didn't know she had been warned and banned before and was on a warning from MNHQ. I agree that considering they have warned her numerous times, banned her once and she was now on a final warning, that the first time she reoffended she should be banned. This is within the rules and something that MNHQ must follow through to ensure MN is policed properly. But, for the life of me, I cannot see that anything DBF posted on that thread was enough to be considered her final chance before a ban. Her posts on the thread did not warrant a ban at all, no matter how many warnings she had been given. To ban her is OTT in my opinion. Surely to ban someone they have to show that they have behaved and acted in a way that breaks all the MN rules. I don't think her posts did.

EdlessAllenPoe · 08/11/2011 19:51

I hope DBF hasn't been banned.

There was nothing really extreme about her views - recognising dogs are animals with feelings, and that dogs lives have value is not an extreme point of view. Applying that belief to the breeding/buying/homing/care/training of animals is not an extreme thing to do - it is a rational consequence.

Although i come from the more show/agility/breeder end of the dog owning cultural spectrum - I certainly never felt under fire, for the good reason that DBF is for the good treatment of dog kind - which all breeders should be too! She may be for an 'absolutely no kill rescue' - which i believe to be impractical - but i don't think that's extreme. I think that's living with her ideals. She advocates 'why breed and buy, when others die' and i think that stands as a valid challenge to the ethics of every breeder and buyer out there - the only breeders that need fear such a challenge though, are those who perhaps don't have a good justification for breeding. Those who do just want money, or even sillier reasons. Every breeder should be at pains to justify every litter - find great homes, ensure none ends up in rescue or PTS, and stand as guarantor for their dog for its lifetime.

in short - if you are well educated about dogs (and many people, lets face it, are completely oblivious to the issues involved in dog breeding/homing/care) - and care about them, then you recognise the value in DBFs posting.

and one of her dogs is really beautiful :P

RichTeaAreCrap · 08/11/2011 19:51

It took me so long to type that out that the thread has now moved on to bloody snakes and tortoises Grin

Thingumy · 08/11/2011 19:59

'I hope DBF hasn't been banned.'

It might help to read the thread.

OrmIrian · 08/11/2011 20:14

Oh that's where I recognise you from pictish Hmm.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 08/11/2011 20:14

Trying not to sound like DBFConfused, but anyone buying a tortoise should check out the Tortoise Trust, research the proper method of husbandry and use the fora there, which is full of knowledgeable people, to find a reputable breeder. Do Not buy from pet shops or dealers!

Oh, and you shouldnt feed lettuce to tortoises! Grin

TeWihara · 08/11/2011 20:17

It's okay saggy, I wasn't going to buy one from the pet store, promise! The pictures were just really cute. Grin

If the urge to own one and read it Esio Trot everyday becomes ridiculously strong it would always have been a rescue.
