Just thought we could start a shiny new thread, as the old one is getting so long. Anyone care to join me?

But dd is squawking so can't actually write anything... Back later to post photos of back carries and my new babyhawk!

Hello, I made myself a Mei Tai today!

I didn't want to shell out a lot of money for something that might not actually suit me and DS so decided to make one and see how we go. It was surprisingly easy to make and I am in love with it. Keep stroking it lovingly and gazing at it - I don't think I'm as loving with my DH as I am with my MT.

DS was being a total grump as I put him in it but as soon as he was settled he was as happy as Larry!

newlark · 25/05/2009 14:50

Well done butterball! Did you use any of the instructions from the internet? I made one a few months ago using some left over bits of curtain lining fabric (just wanted to try a mei tai out without spending anything) and find I am actually using it quite a lot, especially around the house when trying to get ds to sleep as it is easier to transfer him to the cot than from my wrap or patapum.

Am thinking about having another go at one over the summer and trying to make it look a bit more professional this time - am not the neatest at sewing

Bleatblurt · 25/05/2009 18:08

I used the instructions from here. It turned out well even though my sewing skills aren't great either.

newlark · 25/05/2009 21:37

I used those instructions too - adapted a bit as I changed the dimensions slightly and added some padding in the straps and at the top of the body of the carrier. I'm going to make the straps longer next time so that I can tie it with a "lexi-twist" then tie at the back as it holds ds much more securely. I'll also make the straps a bit wider for extra support I think.

Bleatblurt · 25/05/2009 22:04

I managed a lexi twist with mine today. But I'm only 4ft 11in so maybe that helped me have extra length!

MoominMymbleandMy · 25/05/2009 23:42

Butterball, newlark, how impressive! I think I'll only find time to try my hand at a DIY one when I've no one to put in it...

So what did you use for the strap fabric, and where do you find it...in case I do get time and manage to figure out the sewing machine!

newlark · 26/05/2009 09:03

I'm thinking about using corduroy for the straps next time - I've seen pictures of commercial carriers that use it - also see fabric suggestions here

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/05/2009 14:57

Thanks newlark, that looks a really useful link.
Why is it so hard to find suitable strap fabric in the UK?! I found a website in the USA with an amazing selection but they don't sell internationally!

babyphat · 31/05/2009 19:58

ouch!

just got my new Angelpack yesterday, was sooo excited - it is very beautiful, no dangly straps or wrap ends trailing in the dirt...but it hurts! i wore it today for 4 or so hours and it was awful - i know that's a long stretch but i do much longer than that with a MT or wrap with no problems

I hate it!

really hope i can send it back. my fave sling place doesn't stock them, so had to get it from somewhere that does refunds if 'unused' - but you can't tell if you like a sling without using it!

i love the idea of SSCs - should i have one last attempt with an ergo before i give up?

babyphat I sent a meitai back to BigMamaSlings after I'd worn it for about 4 hours, expecting htem to deduct a bit of the money tbh but they refunded me in full, so it's worth a shot. I think they do expect you to try it on iyswim

babyphat · 31/05/2009 20:05

hi littlelamb, that was quick! big mama is my favourite because of their lovely refund policy but they don't sell them, so i got them from another website - stupid me

i'll have a go and if not i guess will have to try to sell it on...but could really do with not losing the £

i was convinced this would be a winner, read tons of reviews, but it as well as not being comfy, the buckles don't feel as safe as an ergo - they would be easy to accidentally undo imo - they are quite tapered, if that makes sense.

littlelamb · 31/05/2009 20:11

I love my Ergo

drowninginclutter · 31/05/2009 20:22

Just found the new thread!

I love my patapum as well (I believe it's very similar to the ergo). I did find it took a bit of fiddling with all the straps to get it perfect though.

littlelamb · 31/05/2009 20:30

dic are you about tomorrow? I will have an extra child for the afternoon and will probably be heading to (the thankfully not shut) Dinkys?

babyphat · 31/05/2009 20:39

i might borrow an ergo for another go, i tried one before and didn't like it (and it was fugly ) but i saw one that had been dyed the other day and it looked fab

OP posts:
littlelamb · 31/05/2009 20:44

They are ugly, no doubt. Someone has pimped their patapum with a cool transfer. I wish the ergo didn't have the big hood and logo because I love doing that sort of thing

drowninginclutter · 31/05/2009 20:46

I've got DS's 10 month check tomorrow at 12 but I'm free after that.

babyphat - I've sewed an iron on patch to my patapum, probably could have ironed it but I didn't want to hurt it . I think it looks much better!

drowninginclutter · 31/05/2009 20:46

Typing too slow!

babyphat · 31/05/2009 20:49

Pimp my ride (the baby version) i love it!

will try the ergo again before i give up, and if it works will get a second hand one and customise - maybe i could dye black and add some cool features...hmmm

thanks guys i knew mumsnet would have ideas!

OP posts:
littlelamb · 31/05/2009 20:58

Mine is black with a green hood. It would look sooooooo cool dyed all black with some massive buttons sewn on. Choking hazard? what choking hazard??

littlelamb · 31/05/2009 20:58

dic we'll be heading down at about 12.30 I think so maybe see you there

drowninginclutter · 31/05/2009 21:00

If I wander down once we're done at the check up it shouldn't be too late? Will you be there a while?

Loving 'pimp my ride'

littlelamb · 31/05/2009 21:07

O yes, I think we'll be there a while

drowninginclutter · 31/05/2009 21:16

I couldn't resist adding a photo of the pimped patapum to my profile.

I fear it might be a little bit small though.

littlelamb · 31/05/2009 21:22

lovely lovely pic
