Just thought we could start a shiny new thread, as the old one is getting so long. Anyone care to join me?

But dd is squawking so can't actually write anything... Back later to post photos of back carries and my new babyhawk!

Fruity, I think the Close is wonderful and easy to put on but you do have a long-ish tail of fabric dangling down each side which I found harder to deal with than the extra fabric from a long wrap! I never found it a problem as far as tripping was concerned because it came down to about the knee (I'm a plus-sized person of medium height) but I thought it was a bit of a strange look; not as tidy as some of the Kari-me wearers I know. So I used to get around it by tying the tails loosely behind my back. Maybe that's just my particular strange issue, as some people think the trail on each side is an elegant look!

Another thing to bear in mind is that as it comes in two parts, that's twice as many things to lose. Though you can store the long/rings bit in the pocket of the tummy-wrap bit (like a pair of socks )

StealthPolarBear · 13/06/2009 16:34

Can I ask for some advice? I have a ring sling which I never used for DS - never really got the hang of, and it seemed a bit precarious. The material isn;t stretchy. I want one of the 'sheet of stretchy material' ones that wraps around your waist a few times and then over your shoulder...I think, for DC#2. PLanning to carry as a newborn in it most of the time, and would love to get the hang of feeding in sling as well.
PLease someone tell me what I'm looking for!

Thanks for your help. I'm going to try on my friends Close on Saturday. I really like the look of the MT - straps look quite thin though?

RGPargy · 15/06/2009 19:42

Loopy - hmmmm, not sure about that one. The only thing i can suggest is that perhaps DD3 wasn't positioned up high enough? I sometimes get achey if DD is a bit low. How long were you carrying her for? How often to you tie tibetan? Also, i was of the opinion that calin bleu and Didys weren't the best wraps for toddlers as they aren't supportive enough to take their weight? I found that to be the case with my Didy when i took DD for a trip up to the shop and found that she had dropped quite a bit, and that was with a RR!

If it is the case that the CB wasn't supporting DD3 enough, then it may be that you were using your back more than you realised to help with her position?

Hope that makes sense??

Oh and PS, just ordered a beautiful dyed Hemp Indio 6!! Should be here with me next week-ish. Will post up pics when i have them.

Hello! Can I jump in and ask some advice in here? Or should I start a thread? Don't want to step on any toes!

drowninginclutter · 15/06/2009 22:47

Here's probably as good a place as any. Personally I wouldn't object to having my toes stepped on by such fetching wellies

MoominMymbleandMy · 15/06/2009 22:50

Wellies, all welcome! Mumsnet Towers won't let us have a sling topic so we huddle in the cupboard instead.

pinkspottywellies · 15/06/2009 23:00

Thanks for the lovely welcome! Ok here goes.

I had a pouch sling for dd when she was about 9 months, so I could make the dinner without putting her down or we would have all starved!! But got rather more into slinging with DS who is now 16 weeks (and about 15lb) I had him in a pouch when he was very tiny then saw a friend's moby and decided I liked wraps. I now have a borrowed hugabub but I think he's too big for it now as it pulls loose very quickly. So I was looking for a calin bleu. But at the weekend I saw an ergo in action and thought it was a bit fab.

I'm thinking I'll get longer out of an ergo and that people won't think I'm a mad hippy so much (not much wrapping goes on around here!) and it looks very quick to put on and easy to throw in the car etc.

So is ergo the best of that type? Is a patapum the same? Is a mai-tei similar?

In short - what shall I get? Help! My sleep deprived brain is really struggling!

Thank you if you've got this far!

MoominMymbleandMy · 15/06/2009 23:07

Wellies Ergos and Patapums fasten with buckles so they are SSCs or Soft Structured Carriers. Which one you like is very much personal choice but they both have good reputations. A Calyx is my favourite SSC because it is very comfortable and very easy to back carry in, but I think at 16 weeks your LO would only just be able to use most SSCs.

A Mei Tai fastens with long straps instead of buckles but if you can wrap, long straps are a doddle. My favourite make at that age was a JoeySling. Babyhawks are good too.

Or, as you like wrapping, you might want to move on to a woven wrap, which is much more supportive than a stretchy.

Can you get to a SlingMeet to try some?

drowninginclutter · 15/06/2009 23:09

I've got a patapum which I love to bits. It is pretty similar to an ergo but cheaper, I bought it after trying littlelamb's ergo and discovering how comfy it was.

The only thing I don't like about the patapum is the sleep hood which is rubbish, I can't undo it without waking DS (it's wrapped in it's own poppers so you have to unpop it then repop it to undo, all behind your back). I don't really find that I need it though as DS tends to lean into my back anyway.

The ergo has a little pocket on the back but with either of them you're going to need a changing bag anyway so I don't think it's an essential.

I don't have any experience with mei-tais, I do occasionally yearn for one as they come in much more beautiful designs but if you're trying to avoid the mad hippy look maybe that wouldn't be a problem.

pinkspottywellies · 15/06/2009 23:25

Thanks very much for your replies. Crikey, I just looked at the calyx on you tube and it looked complicated with the seat bit! I've seen a papatum for sale so might see if I can get that and see how I get on.

Where do you have sling meets? Don't suppose you'll be local to me. I'm in an awkward part of the east mids!

Right. He's awake but I will probably be back for more advice! Thanks

MoominMymbleandMy · 15/06/2009 23:30

Nooo! The seat bit is what makes it easy because there's no worry about the LO dropping out of the bottom when you put them on your back.

Which was what happened when I tried an Ergo but with a doll not a baby!

Look here for SlingMeets and also here for information and secondhand slings.

newlark · 16/06/2009 09:25

I like the patapum more than the ergo - the back comes up higher (I have the older toddler version which goes from approx 5 mths to 4 yrs) and I found the sleephood easier to use (I leave it undone and just pull it up over ds's head when needed - I don't find it gets in the way). I have carried my 2.5 yr old dd in the patapum quite happily

llandb · 17/06/2009 13:50

Moomin, Moomin, Moomin, why did you have to go and post that link about parasols a few pages back? I was perfectly happy with a collapsible aqua-coloured brolly with kittens on it and now I've gone an ordered the blue one with roses
I didn't reall want roses; I just wanted a blue or green one and that was the only way. And I found it more cheaply through an eBay shop

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/06/2009 14:06

Sorree..! I got my parasol from Ebay too but that was last summer and when I looked recently I could only see the Japanese paper ones like giant cocktail sticks.

I'm sure your DP will look very fetching under a blue canopy with roses!

I really wanted the parasol with cats but jibbed a bit at the price.

cornflakegirl · 17/06/2009 15:08

I know this isn't really the right place, but is anyone looking to sell a Moby wrap? (The sling bit in For Sale didn't look very busy, so I thought I might have more luck here.)

FruitynNutty · 17/06/2009 19:26

If I decide to buy a new carrier then I will definitely sell mine. I really love it so still deciding. Going to try a friend's one on Sat so should know by then.....
It's olive green and in extremely good condition, had it about 8 weeks

NormaSknockers · 18/06/2009 08:25

Sorry to intrude again ladies, I'm not having much luck finding anywhere to list my Mei Tai as eBay really doesn't seem the best place to sell this type of thing, can anyone recommend somewhere that might be a good place to sell?

FruitynNutty · 18/06/2009 08:42

Ooh Norma, I've got my eye on a Mei Tai. What colour is it? I'm going to be trying on my friend's Close carrier on Sat. If I don't like it then I might go for a MT. I love the look of them just still not sure what's best.
How much do you want for it? Do you have a picture?

NormaSknockers · 18/06/2009 09:49

Hi Fruity if you peep at the slings for sale section there's an ad in there for it with a piccie, it's cow print pony skin one side & plain black the other, in immaculate condition, made by EasySlings did have it up for £35 posted but have reduced to £28 posted (I paid £55)

cornflakegirl · 18/06/2009 10:24

Fruity - let me know if you decide to sell the Moby.
