@HappySnow The Sutton Grammars have never provided more than an 'you passed email' and it is difficult to tell how close you are to admission, especially this year as the VAT rise could impact the number of children seeking grammar places.

You best bet is to place the schools you want in the highest position on the admissions form and include a back up school that you are happy with and you know that you are eligible for. That way if you do not secure a place at the grammar school on national offers day then you will still secure a place at a school that you deem suitable for your DC.

We considered Whitgift School, but due to the VAT, we may not apply.

OnlyTheBravest · 20/10/2024 16:32

The Whitgift foundation is trouble. They have already closed the girls school, so not only is there the VAT rise but I bet that there will be far less bursaries around this year for the two boys schools as well. Unfortunately, the knock on effect is likely to increase the numbers applying for the Sutton grammars. This makes predictions uncertain for this year's admission group and places an increased responsibility on parents to really understand the admissions criteria for the schools they intend on applying for.

Good afternoon! I would love to know how many boys qualified for WCGS. This has been our first-choice school from the beginning, and our son can literally walk there. However, we have no idea how many boys are ahead of him for admission.

This is what I was trying to find but no luck. The only possibility will be someone replying whose DS has not qualified for WCGS and they have been told the number or passed candidates or some criteria info.

@HappySnow - my DC qualified for all 3 but we are unlikely to put WCGS down nor Sutton. Hope that helps. There will be others like us.

Yawoo · 20/10/2024 19:41

@HappySnow 1249 candidates sat the second stage test and 918 met the required standard for Sutton Grammar School.

As WCGS score is lower than Sutton Grammar School, I think around 1100 boys are qualified for WCGS.

My son qualified for all 3 . We are ooc and keen to know if Wilson has any catchment policy. We only have 3 options to provide our preferences in CAF. We stay in Coventry.

How many places does Wilsons have and because they pass fewer students, does that mean they offer to everyone that passed?

Bbsrmum · 20/10/2024 22:52

Thanks for the info! Few info shared are sometimes confusing where they say that same scores kids will be allocated places based on distance.I am confused how to place school in preference in CAF.

Congratulations to your son!
Finger cross now!

670 boys have passed the second stage Entrance Examination for Wilson’s School. Unfortunately, around 500 boys will be disappointed if they put Wilson’s as their first choice.

180 if I'm not wrong

No, Wilson has 180 seats only.
But there will be many children who passed the Wilson's test but will go to Tiffin/other Grammar schools/private schools etc because of diatance/choice so there is a fairly high chance for those who pass to get a place.

Once you move to the area and have tour application taken over by the LA there, you should be able to add more preferences; the maximum on the CAF used by all the London boroughs allows six.

Bbsrmum · 21/10/2024 10:21

Ok, but due to uncertainty on which school will be allocated its difficult to move before the Allocation day.

SunSunny · 21/10/2024 18:36

Hi there...My son has cleared SGS and WCGS but unfortunately he has missed Wilsons (English cut-off). His Wilson score said 492. We are based out of Hounslow. Any suggestion on what are his chances for SGS and WCGS ? Thank you for sharing any insights.

Fuzzylogik · 21/10/2024 23:10

Hi,

Does anyone know the cutoff for NWSEE ?

ALongProcess · 21/10/2024 23:11

@SunSunny try looking up WhatDoTheyKnow for SGS and WCGS and it should give you some past years' rankings. My son scored 499 last year (missed one of the cut-offs too) but cleared SGS and WCGS. His first choice on CAF was WCGS which he was allocated on 1 March.

Bbsrmum · 21/10/2024 23:23

Good to hear that! Can you tell if you were in catchment or non catchment? This will help us to understand better to give our preferences.

ALongProcess · 21/10/2024 23:49

@Bbsrmum non-catchment!

SunSunny · 22/10/2024 13:28

@ALongProcess thank you, it so relieving :) Also you can please share "your" view and opion on SGS Vs WCGC ? I am sure there must be a reason you chose WCGS over SGS...thank you !

Bbsrmum · 22/10/2024 14:30

I am currently struggling with preferences to give in CAF as we can give 3 preferences. I am not sure out of 3 schools in Sutton which one should be 1st choice.

ALongProcess · 22/10/2024 16:10

@SunSunny it wasn't a straightforward choice....

SGS pluses: seemed really friendly and the admissions lady there was very helpful; central Sutton location; lockers for students; swimming pool (altho open air and only in summer)
SGS minuses: constrained site and lack of green space; dark gloomy corridors; sports ground off-site; canteen menu seemed a bit fast-food-y

WCGS pluses: lovely green site, more modern/lighter classrooms; very engaging teachers at open day; interesting elements to curriculum (e.g. PPE); tasty-sounding menu; lots of outdoor table tennis tables
WCGS minuses: limited MFL provision (but great for Latin), no lockers

SGS is marginally higher up the league tables but not a lot in it and WCGS seems to be on the rise. Both had fairly strong provision for drama, ski trips etc.. but sport generally more extensive at WCGS was our perception, except football

We let our son choose his CAF order and he said he liked the general feel of WCGS best. But, in the end, after much debate we actually let him take up a scholarship offer at another school nearer home with an even bigger curriculum offer. A heart-wrenchingly tough decision and I'm sure he would have been really happy at any of the schools.

Hi everyone,
Please bear with me for a long post.
As I have mentioned in my earlier post that my friend's son only passed for WCGS. She is confused about the mail received from Sutton Grammar.
Obviously as he was invited for the 2nd stage so his first stage scores were not told at that time. But according to the emails sent to those who did not succeed in the first stage the cut off stanrdidsed score was 212.
Now after not qualifying in the 2nd stage he has been sent the breakup of his first stage and 2nd stage score and it is mentioned that they have been added in 2:2:3:3 ( 60 % of SET1 MATHS, 60% of SET 1 Eng, 90% of SET2 MATHS and 90% of SET2 Eng.
Now surprisingly the SET1 scores of Eng and MATHS do not add up to 212.they add up to 191.
Is this a discrepancy? Should she email the school to clarify it ? Can anyone whose has not passed 2nd stage for Sutton confirm that their first stage scores add to 212 or more ?
Can this have an impact on his result of the other 2 schools as well ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

To add to this, as the schools are now closed for half term should she add SGS on CAF before she gets any reply from the school ?
It is not a case of re marking . Can it be a discrepancy ? Should she raise her hopes a bit or not? What is the best way to approach the school ? Will they reply to the email or will it be dealt through an appeal ?
Sorry for so many questions. But they are passing through a difficult stage as a family and I just want to help her.
