Uni offers

Aurea · 05/03/2023 14:20

Is anyone else waiting for any Scottish uni offers for their DC?

My DC is awaiting a response for computer science at Edinburgh, St As, and Glasgow. He's had a Cambridge post interview rejection and also waiting to hear from Durham.

He's applied with 6 As at higher and 1 A at advanced higher from S4-5 so this exceeds all standard grade requirements (non contextual state school).

I'm at a bit of a loss and starting to tear my hair out. Anyone else in the same boat?

Hi OP my DS has his offers but a few of his friends are still waiting

WednesdaysPlaits · 05/03/2023 16:43

Bulk if St andrews offers apparently come out third week in March

martha4clark · 05/03/2023 23:16

Keep calm, I'm sure they'll get an offer, those unis usually wait till near the deadline.

WednesdaysPlaits · 06/03/2023 05:52

Computer science is also one of the most popular degree subjects. Very competitive.

IkBenDeMol · 06/03/2023 07:35

We're still waiting for loads.

DD applied for two separate courses at Stirling, then Glasgow, Strathclyde and Aberdeen. Had an interview for Glasgow last week and they said within a week so she should hear soon. Unconditional for one of the Stirling options. Still waiting for the rest. Many of her friends are in the same situation. One or two offers/rejections from the 5 they've applied to.

Be patient. DS applied 2 years ago and Edinburgh and Glasgow for him were ridiculously slow, it was well into April. (Even with Covid, that's late)

Rhumba · 06/03/2023 07:42

Had three offers to date but still waiting to hear from st Andrews and Edinburgh. As others have said, they are typically later than others to offer but I have heard of some who have had offers to date from them.

SandyIrvin · 06/03/2023 11:47

A couple of years ago, DD found tsr useful as she could see whether any offers were out for her subject/fee category.

Bit soul destroying for StA as you see others getting offers and know you weren't first pick. Relief when you are not in the weekly reject bundle though.

DDs school were good at managing expectations for those applying for competitive courses. Even showed a graph showing odds of getting 1, 2 or more offers.

My DC would have been happy with any of their choices. More difficult if your DC not happy and feels a failure if only gets safe choice.

I hope he hears soon

St Andrews apparently holds back a lot of offers until its accommodation is open. Then people with offers rush to firm if they’re going to. That means they have a much better idea of space on the courses.

Accommodation opens in one week.

dancemom · 08/03/2023 10:04

DD got 3 unconditionals from Glasgow and one from Strathclyde last month.

Still waiting on a response from Edinburgh but she's going to choose Glasgow regardless

Plum8 · 12/03/2023 14:48

Hello all! My DD is also anxiously waiting to hear back for Computing from St Andrews so if anyone has any more intel esp re CS offers, please do share. It looks like they are hosting CS offer holders days on March 18 and 25 so you would think they would get the bulk of CS offers out before this!

Runningslow · 14/03/2023 13:06

Still waiting for all 3 scottish unis. Has offers from the 2 english ones she applied to.

WednesdaysPlaits · 14/03/2023 13:16

Aurea · 14/03/2023 13:52

Thanks all for your replies 😊

I've been putting off responding as I was hoping for some positive news, but alas no change and he's still sitting on zero offers for computer science.

Hoping things start to move for everyone v.v. soon.

HI Aurea! My daughter still hasn't heard back for computing from St A's, Edin or Durham so I am also feeling super stressed! Esp with the Computing offer holders days for St A's coming up this Sat and next, and accommodation opening tomorrow. Hoping for good news for everyone everywhere all at once, to coin a phrase!

Aurea · 14/03/2023 16:17

At least it's solidarity in numbers!

Is your DC Scottish or RUK? My DS is Scottish.

Where else has your daughter applied and does she have any offers.

My son is waiting for the main three and then Glasgow. He was rejected post interview for Cambridge.

HI Aurea - yes, that's the great thing about online communities like this! My DD is RUK and applied quite late in Jan to St A's, Edin, Durham, Kings and UCL, after a bit of agonising over Imperial (She didn't like the open day - so few girls! - but felt it's so prestigious for computing she should apply. In the end, she decided not to). St A's is her top choice so we're keeping everything crossed. We keep telling ourselves she should be fine (all A* predictions and she took the Harvard CS50 course off her own bat, etc) but we know computing is so popular and there are so many smart passionate people applying! Anyway - keep the faith! Hopefully both of ours will hear back soon with good news.

IkBenDeMol · 14/03/2023 16:46

DD has applied for Primary Education at Glasgow and had a Zoom interview on 2nd March, they said they aim to tell people within 5 working days and she's still waiting.

Remember also that uni lecturers are on strike in many Scottish unis wed, thu, fri this week and then mon, tue, wed next. I am not sure if this will affect the admissions team though.

IkBenDeMol · 14/03/2023 18:07

DD has just had an offer through for Primary Education at Glasgow. Chuffed to bits for her.

Aurea · 14/03/2023 18:24

OMG!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Durham offer just came through for computer science. First offer.

AA at advanced higher (he's already got an A in maths from last year).

He's taking four more advanced highers this year and predicted 4As which he achieved in his mocks.

Fingers crossed for some more good news for all. 😊

Hi Aurea! Many many congrats!! So thrilled for you and your DC!

SandyIrvin · 14/03/2023 18:59

@Aurea: great news on the offer. My DS2 lives in Durham. Uni has a nice vibe. I would choose it myself if I had my time again.

Does he have any preferences amongst his other choices?

Aurea · 14/03/2023 19:09

Thanks Sandy.

I think the free tuition fees from a Scottish uni may pull him that way.

So it'd either be St As or Edinburgh.

Durham does look lovely though!

Aurea · 14/03/2023 19:10

Thanks plum. 😊

It's the Meng he applied and got an offer for if that has any bearing.

Fingers crossed for luck your way too. 🍀

DS3 had been told to expect an offer/rejection from Edinburgh by mid April 😬 he's applying to the art College though so they have to sift portfolios on top of the usual stuff
DS2 applied to St Andrews and Edinburgh in 2018 and didn't hear until the last week in March Edinburgh was even later.

Plum8 · 14/03/2023 21:37

Hi Aurea! So it turns out my DD also heard from Durham today to confirm her residency status (we are Asian immigrants) so fingers crossed that means they're at least considering giving her an offer - who knows?! Ah re lots of Scottish uni faculty being on strike in the coming week - thanks to IkBenDeMol for the intel and so thrilled about your DD and Glasgow!
