Found sex toys in husbands bag

I think I know what people are going to say, but I have no one else to talk to about this.
a couple of days ago, I found some sex toys, lube and a blindfold in my husbands bag. Yes, I was snooping. I have a history of not trusting him- he had an affair 14 years ago, and my spidey senses have always been on high alert. I was finding his viagra was going missing, and alarm bells tarted ringing. He had to go away for the night due to work, so before he packed his clothes, I checked his bag and have found the stuff. He has not liked me looking through his stuff before and gets really annoyed with me (and takes the moral high ground) if he thinks I’ve gone through his stuff- which I don’t do often. So, I don’t tell him that I saw all these things. I asked him straight out if he was having an affair. He said no. I asked him if he was sleeping with anyone else, and he said no. He asked me where all the questions had come from and I just said that I ‘had a feeling’ as viagra was going missing. I got some crap about it being in another room. He seems to think that I’m feeling neglected and says that he wants to spend more time with me and that we should do more things without the kids etc. But this is not the case. He’s not home til late tonight, but I think I’m going to have to come clean and tell him that I looked in his bag, and give him a chance to explain. I’m so confused and upset. We never get a chance to talk properly because he works late or we have the kids around. I want to speak frankly tonight, but I’m not sure I’ll get the chance to. I think I’m going to go mad if I hold all this in though.

Whatever happens he will twist it to ensure it is all YOUR fault. Be prepared for that, and develop strategies to deal with the DARVO coming your way. In case you don't know it is the acronym for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender.

SECOND UPDATE- confronted him. He said that he bought is for me, but didn’t think I would want it so he chucked it away. It’s such a weird thing to do. I’m not convinced. He sounds so sincere. Am I being gaslit??

Of course you are.

You either stay with him and accept he will continue shagging around.

Or leave.

Arcticienne · 15/07/2026 12:08

….looks like you’re not the only person in his life … but I’m guessing you’re the only woman …

If it makes you feel better they always run back to their wives. My "DH" had an affair 9 years ago and came back with his tail between his legs.

@PinkyBrain290 You have a very odd take on acceptable behaviour in relationships and if I was the OP I would not trust your judgement one bit.

Where in my post did I say it was acceptable behaviour? I don't condone it whatsoever, HOWEVER life happens, affairs happen. It doesn't make any of this ok. My judgement is, he is 1000% having an affair. I have been to so many conferences / work events where both married men & women are having one night stands / affairs.

OldScribbler · 15/07/2026 12:11

The question is are you both into that? And if not what do you conclude about your relationship?
i imagine a high percentage of couples have lost interest.

I'd say so. This stuff isn't cheap for a start.

MissSookieStackhouse · 15/07/2026 12:19

Of course you're being gaslit! Why would he buy these things then change his mind and throw them away without ever asking you. It's absolute nonsense. Were they new in boxes, or loose in the bag? (Ewww, unwrapped means already used by someone else.)

The only question is what are you going to do about this obvious cheat? Get your ducks in a row and kick him out presumably as he's taking the piss.

PinkyBrain290 · 15/07/2026 12:20

I'd also throw out there that I bet they do not share bank accounts. Best of luck OP. You know the answer deep down

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 15/07/2026 12:22

Gaslit?

You're ignoring the giant bonfire in front of your eyes.

Please tell me you know this in your heart of hearts and just don't want to face it, because otherwise you are too much of an innocent for this world.

Itsseweasy · 15/07/2026 12:30

You want to believe his terrible “explanation” so that you can say “oh ok dear” and go back to sticking your head in the sand.
It’s up to you to decide whether you are happy to stay with someone who is cheating - because he is - or if you are strong enough to end it for good this time.
Come on OP, you know what’s going on. Don’t waste your time on the pick me dance - he didn’t change 14 years ago and he won’t change now.

Inthewoody · 15/07/2026 12:35

14 years you have known you can’t trust him op. Of course he’s lying most people don’t pack sex toys for a work trip. Generally if he was buying toys for you he would have discussed with you first? I don’t think I would be bothering to discuss with him anymore. I think it’s time you chose you and stopped him cheating on you. Make a plan op even a quiet one.

Alittlefrustrated · 15/07/2026 12:47

I'll get wrong for this - but no one is this stupid. An update too far.

I’m assuming these are dildos as opposed to a fleshlight? If the former, I assume your husband isn’t interested in penetrating himself?

It’s a load of BS lol.

A lot of people think, "How could anyone be that stupid?" but a lot of people are, me included. I was married for 12 years to someone who serially cheated, lied and manipulated. Looking back now, some of the things I accepted seem unbelievable. But that's the thing about gaslighting. It doesn't happen overnight.
It's the classic boiling frog analogy. If someone treated you terribly on day one, you'd leave. Instead, it happens gradually, over years. Your confidence is chipped away bit by bit, your sense of what is normal shifts, and eventually you stop trusting your own judgement.

I can remember finding an invoice for a hotel room abroad. It was a double room, with two meals ordered through room service. When I questioned it, I was told the hotel only accepted bookings for double rooms with meals included. Even as I was hearing it, part of me knew it didn't make sense. But after years of being told I was wrong, overreacting or imagining things, I accepted the explanation.

There was much more than that. I was repeatedly told I wouldn't cope on my own. My access to friends, family and finances became increasingly restricted. Not in a dramatic, obvious way, but slowly, over a long period of time.
What makes it harder for people to understand is that, on paper, I was the last person you'd expect it to happen to. I'm an Executive Director, successful in my career, perfectly capable of looking after myself. But abuse doesn't discriminate. Being competent at work doesn't make you immune to someone systematically undermining your confidence at home. When he eventually left me for someone else, I genuinely thought my world had ended. In reality, after a few weeks of panic and heartbreak, I recovered surprisingly quickly. Since then I've been happier, more successful and more confident than I've ever been.

So whenever I see people asking why someone doesn't just leave, or how they could possibly believe such obvious lies, I think it's important to understand that gaslighting can fundamentally alter how you see yourself and the world around you. If you haven't experienced it, it's very difficult to appreciate just how powerful it can be.

TheThingOnTheIce · 15/07/2026 15:30

@Angrybird76 thank you for your post. It’s so true . I still wonder if my ex really was up to anything even though when I put all the evidence together I look like an idiot for not ending it. Like you say it’s the boiled frog scenario.

Omg that is the classic excuse for things like this when caught!
Or that it was a joke for a mate. The guy is an out and out liar

Thesafetygeneral · 15/07/2026 19:23

You are absolutely being gaslit. He’s given it to another woman! Stop feeling yourself.

Shakesp · 15/07/2026 19:30

Kerry242 · 14/07/2026 21:09

What are you confused about? You know he cheats - past experience tells you that. He's cheating again.

Either leave or live with it.

But stop hoping he'll be something he's not. He's shown you who he is in the past and has shown you again now - believe it.
Believe his actions, not his words. He's a cheater and he's having an affair. What's to discuss?

There's no discussion to be had, just a decision to be made - by you.

Leave or live with it - those are you're only options.

Sorry OP but it's time to face the music and make decisions for you, not listen to explanations from him.

Bingo!

Women love too much too. Always see the positives. Deep down you know what’s going on but you don’t want it to be true so you accept the lies. When it’s combined with abuse it’s difficult to leave but I think it is as the that poster said.

  1. leave
  2. accept it and don’t torture yourself.
Lavenderandbrown · 16/07/2026 07:20

@Angrybird76 wanted to second appreciation for your post… especially our shared experience of being devastated and then quite unexpectedly feeling relieved peaceful hopeful. It takes a lot to leave systemic persistent abuse and control but it can be done.

the harder you fall the higher you bounce.

he’s a total liar op. So sorry
