Phrases that make you swipe left

I'm a glutton for punishment, so I've recently gone back on OLD, and I'm finding it something of a trial so far. All the things that used to annoy me about people's profiles are still exactly the same as when I was last doing this! These are my instant nope phrases:

My kids are my life (so where would a potential girlfriend fit in? Also, that's just basic parenting...)

I don't take myself/life too seriously (almost guaranteed to be immature and flaky, and leave all the boring life admin to some other sucker)

Not looking for a penpal (will exchange a maximum of 5 messages with you before suggesting that you meet up for 'fun 😉')

Is anyone genuine on here? (Dude, maybe don't advertise the fact that nobody ever replies to you)

I'm 6ft, because apparently that matters (while being short is not unattractive to me, passive aggression certainly is)

What are your instantly offputting phrases? I'd be intrigued to know what men have to say about this too, in case I'm being inadvertently annoying myself...

@jimmyjabs I've seen quite alot of men who say in their bios that they are older than their profiles state...I never even clicked that it would be so they fell into the filtered category!

melononapear · 12/02/2021 21:40

I've noticed this a lot too! Half of them will say that it's an accident and that tinder or whatever won't let them change it but come on, how hard is it to get your own birthday right when you sign up?! Do they really think were that stupid!

GreenlandTheMovie · 12/02/2021 22:03

@JimmyJabs

Maybe someone can help me decipher a message I got today? It simply says "cc". I've tried Googling, and all I can come up with is carbon copy, i.e. on email, or closed caption, which is apparently a thing on TikTok. I cannot fathom how either of these definitions could constitute a chatup line. Has this bloke just sat on his phone?

I've thought of another offputting phrase, which I just actually saw on a profile that I swiped right by accident. "I'm 26, not 46". I get that this is probably what men do when they want to meet an older woman and they know they're unlikely to show up in the searches of anyone much over 35... but what's the point, when they're just not interested? I don't want to date someone young enough to be my son, especially not one who doesn't respect my right to rule him out of my options.

I think it might mean "ok"? Not sure 100% though. Its like men on OLD use a different form of language, very casual and sort of can't be bothered.

So many men lying about their age, and no doubt everything else. I think there are a lot of regulars on there. Practised regulars.

This thread is way more fun than OLD!

caketherapy · 12/02/2021 22:15

'I'm not an axe-murderer'

Hmm
Lolalovesroses · 12/02/2021 22:59

I think the cc is meant to be a xx, and his fingers have slipped with them being so close on the keyboard. Doesn't bode well if you are looking for a man who pays attention to detail!

JimmyJabs · 12/02/2021 23:21

I sent him a message saying that I would like to reply but I don't know what he's trying to convey to me. He then unmatched me 🤣. He must have arse-texted me after all.

Wow. Not exactly a Great Loss.

This sort of thing is why I don't bother with OLD.

When I've seen this on female profiles (up to mid 20s), their profile is a year or two older than their bio. I can only imagine that when they joined Facebook as a kid, they had to lie about their DoB to avoid the age restriction and are now stuck with it.

I dread to think about what the men you refer to are thinking though.

I asked my teen dd was she thinks cc stands for. She said cute couple.... 😂

That's equally weird if that's what he meant....

Occupation: electrician/magician

Although I am tempted to find out if there's any crossover in his work.

This thread is hilarious. I joined bumble last night and you've ruined it for me!!!! I spent more time laughing at people's bios than looking at their faces Grin

ItisLikethis · 13/02/2021 11:20

@havecourage8bekind Yep! Once you realise the absurdity of it, it's difficult to change that view of it.

The stupid thing is, I always end up going back for "one more try". I just never learn! I work in the civil service, and I have many intelligent, cultured, good-looking male colleagues around my age but - as I'm now in my 40s - they're all married already. That's what generally happens with decent, stable men of the sort I might be interested in. If I'd only joined 20 years ago, I might have been in with a chance, but as it is, OLD is my only realistic option. It's a good job I'm not desperate to be coupled up, because that's when people tend to lower their standards.

@Merlotmum85

"I'm the kind of guy who will hold the door open for you and slap your arse on the way through". Seen this one a worrying number of times. Also people who describe themselves as "genuine". If you have to state it then you probably aren't.
YES. That hold the door quote is absolutely vile and I’ve seen it several times. It’s a guaranteed left swipe even if the rest of the profile is good.
JimmyJabs · 14/02/2021 15:48

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but I couldn't not share. If it gets deleted, so be it! Can the man not see the crashing irony in slagging off "look at me" social media types while using THAT profile picture?

I think he WAS being ironic.

Either way. Seen better. Prefer a man who knows what a rocky road is...Cake

melononapear · 14/02/2021 23:54

I've just seen a profile on tinder which had mostly normal pics apart from the usual gym selfies until....get to the end and there's a fully nude pic of him standing to attention (no face including obviously 🙄).

I mean I've had dick pics sent to me via private message but never had my eyeballs assaulted like that just reading someone's profile!! How did that even make it on there, my pics get deleted if they're slightly too far away or badly lit let alone fully naked?! I thought there were rules against obscene pics on profiles?!

DdraigGoch · 15/02/2021 00:25

Isn't the moderating on Tinder reactive rather than proactive as it is on Match? In other words reliant on waiting for a report before acting.

chatnicknameyousuggested · 15/02/2021 00:29

Ex DH is a terrible speller and in general poor at SPAG.
A friend found him on OLD a few weeks ago:

I'm a pendant. Swipe left if you don't know how to spell.

SorryStateOfAffairs · 15/02/2021 00:51

Oh the irony Wink (guessing it was autocorrect!)

But, FWIW, inagree with you!

No, that was the point of the post!

Note the colon.....

SorryStateOfAffairs · 15/02/2021 00:58

Ah totally missed that! Had to read it 3 times before I saw it Grin
