How much did your engagement ring cost?

Sorry for the nosy thread but I'm genuinely intrigued.. I see huge rocks, cute little numbers and they're all beautiful but I often wonder how people afford them and what's considered a 'normal' amount to spend? I know it used to be months salary in the old days.. Is that still the case?

Mine was £10K - didn't mean anything to him though when he was unfaithful and I got rid. Must sell it and buy something lovely for the kids I guess.

LittleCandle · 10/09/2016 23:14

My own engagement ring cost £199 in 1985. It was opal and diamond. I loved it, but sold it without a single qualm when we parted and he left me broke. I also gave away the 2 eternity rings I had, one to each DC. I do wear and am very fond of, my grandmother's engagement ring. I have no real idea of its worth now, but when my grandfather bought it in 1926, it cost £50. Somewhere, I still have the box for it and the receipt is in there. Papa knew what he was about and obviously was very in love with Grandma.

notagiraffe · 10/09/2016 23:17

about £300-350 22 years ago.

bestofbothhovis · 10/09/2016 23:17

Aww bestof Congratulations 🍾💐

Curious541 · 10/09/2016 23:29

£50 4 years ago - silver with cz. The important thing for me was that we got engaged and wanted to spend our lives together not how big the rock was.
3rd WAnni this week Smile

Pinkheart5915 · 10/09/2016 23:32

Huge congratulations bestof I wish you many years of happiness together 🍾🎉

Perfectlypurple · 10/09/2016 23:36

Less than £300 I think. I love it. My dh picked it before he proposed thinking about what I would like. That means more than the cost. His wedding ring cost more.

Jadetreesbringluck · 10/09/2016 23:38

Picked it together, second hand...paid €450 worth €1,700. It's 3 piece set so the top one was engagement the other 2 eternity. & wedding band. I am missing a diamond ( lost it camping!!) but will get that sorted soon. Love it! Will be getting a more expensive bespoke ring in the future though Grin

I found "the one" in Tiffany's in Las Vegas - diamonds and sapphire. I turned it round to see it was $21,500! I politely handed it back.

The one we bought was a quarter of the price, in the sale at a less well known shop. It's gorgeous

Joysmum · 10/09/2016 23:45

I didn't have an engagement ring at my insistence. Waste of money to me as we were broke and needed the money for the wedding. Also I'd proposed. I told DH if he was that bothered what others thought, I could swap my birthday pressie ring on to that finger. Tbh I stopped wearing that ring too as I'm not once for jewellery but I do wear my wedding band.

maggiethemagpie · 10/09/2016 23:48

About 1k.

Orwellschild · 10/09/2016 23:48

£1k, white gold 7 diamond cluster ring. It's unusual and looks a little vintage and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever owned Smile

Passmethecrisps · 10/09/2016 23:48

All of these rings are beautiful. My engagement ring is insured at about 5k I think. Wedding ring roughly. £800

We are not indulgent people but the rings were important. They were designed by us and made by an independent silversmith who worked with us to use fair trade platinum and Canadian diamonds. I am aware that sounds like an utter fest of wank but at the time that was what we felt was important and it seemed terribly romantic at the time.

I absolutely adore my ring set. I love the fact that the jeweller made a pattern just for us which then went on stuff for our wedding party and so on. It was a massive indulgence never to be repeated.

I do still pop on the bling-tastic cubic zirconium temporary one now DH bought from Amazon and admire its sheer fabulousness.

My point is if the ring reflects where you are at that point in time then it will be perfect - £10 or £10000

GlasgowPingu · 11/09/2016 00:03

Engagement ring was just over £1k eighteen months ago - princess cut diamond on a platinum band. Yes, it's a small stone (about 0.3 of a carat), but it's beautiful.

Wedding ring was £250 - plain slim platinum band.

Marmitelover55 · 11/09/2016 00:06

Here is mine - think it was about £900 18 years ago. It's platinum and so is wedding ring which, I think was much cheaper (but can't remember how much).

About £6k although we went to a sale and then haggled down further. From MN threads I gather the later is unusual (my ring was outwith the budget, so I was quite content with this).

I still love it and treasure it. We've been a bit lot lax about organising our wedding for various life reasons but I still love the fact DP shelled out of his own pocket (I am main breadwinner) and got me something beautiful. We are not trying to organise a small wedding.

TheGreenTriangle · 11/09/2016 00:27

Around £6K, 17 years ago. It's a 0.75 carat (not massive) diamond, C colour that's only Internally Flawless on a platinum band. Wedding rings for both of us came with the engagement ring.

It's the traditional solitaire and not very flashy but we love it and it still gives me great pleasure to wear and see it every day. Very shiny Smile

Secretsandlies222 · 11/09/2016 00:28

Around £3,500 ten years ago.
Last year the stone fell out of its casing without me noticing.
Lost without trace. Thank God for insurance who replaced it with no problem.

BittyWanter · 11/09/2016 00:29

£60 Blush

He was unemployed and was nearly 20 years ago.

Tables have turned however and he got me a new wedding ring last year with three diamonds in(for three DC)

For richer for poorer etc

ilovemykitchenaid · 11/09/2016 09:54

£7000

Engagement ring was about £500 12 years ago, most of that cost was the single diamond. As I never wore it I had the diamond set into my wedding band instead and now I see it every day.

gildedcage · 11/09/2016 10:21

Not a clue. He proposed with something he had to hand whilst on his knees Wink. We designed the ring together and the diamonds are lovely and are still very sparkly all these years on. But it wasn't a months wages. I haven't a clue what the wedding ring cost and this was also made to fit my engagement ring. He also gave me an eternity ring on our 1 year wedding anniversary no idea what that cost.

It was more important to have money for the wedding...and to furnish our new home. We were very young and we were proud that we paid for everything without taking out credit.
