How much did your engagement ring cost?

Sorry for the nosy thread but I'm genuinely intrigued.. I see huge rocks, cute little numbers and they're all beautiful but I often wonder how people afford them and what's considered a 'normal' amount to spend? I know it used to be months salary in the old days.. Is that still the case?

Mine was £650 in 1989.

DH & I chose it together, we didn't want to spend a fortune on a ring, but we got something I really loved & still do. It's an oval ruby surrounded by twelve little diamonds. It's a similar style (but obviously much smaller!) to those of Princess Diana and the Duchess of York.

I've just put £650 in 1989 into an online inflation calculator and got just under £1,500 in today's money Shock

YoureaFlutteringCunt · 10/09/2016 22:15

£150. And it's priceless to me.

Anarchyinateacup · 10/09/2016 22:17

40 dollars from wallmart when we were on holiday. Its small, vintage style and I love it.

TopazBurns · 10/09/2016 22:18

Mybugslife Flowers what a super special ring that will be.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 10/09/2016 22:19

Didn't get engaged so didn't have a ring. Did design my own wedding ring though, in platinum, cost £2500.

thewalrus · 10/09/2016 22:22

£7.95, about fifteen years ago. I bought it myself the day after we told people we were getting married. Wedding ring was £75. Don't wear either of them regularly, but I still like both.

davirose · 10/09/2016 22:22

£150, wedding ring £80.
I guard them with my life.

(DH has never had a wedding ring)

ethelb · 10/09/2016 22:23

I'm not sure as DH bought it, but about £270 I think. That's for a pretty, black sapphire flanked with tiny diamonds on a white gold band,

My wedding ring was similar I think.

strawberryblondebint · 10/09/2016 22:24

Here is mine. About 350 I think. I love it. Wedding band was secondhand and 18ct gold and under £100. The big sapphire and diamond one was a birthday present and dh chose it at auction. I love it although the sapphire is really dark compared to the one in my engagement ring.

Mine was £250 16 years ago.

Iwasbornin1993 · 10/09/2016 22:27

£3.5k and DH was still in med school at the time, so it was about 6 months of wages! I absolutely adore it, though I was terrified of wearing it for a good few months afterwards. Wedding ring was a more modest £900 but matches perfectly! I'd have loved them both exactly the same whether they cost £3.5k or £3.50, it's the sentiment that means the most to me.

Iwasbornin1993 · 10/09/2016 22:28

That was 6 months wages from a part time job, I wasn't clear Blush

mumsnit · 10/09/2016 22:29

I think my engagement ring was around £450 and wedding ring approx £150 ish 10 yrs ago.

Since then I've bought a new wedding ring as I lost a lot of weight and didn't want my original one resized.... and I've also bought a new engagement ring (cheapie one) to go with the new wedding ring Blush

I think I'm quite ring obsessed as one of the first things I notice about someone is their rings Blush

squeak10 · 10/09/2016 22:36

Piece of kitchen foil rolled up to fit my finger.Still have it! Along with wedding and eternity ring

catmombaby16 · 10/09/2016 22:37

Wow all these rings are stunning!

I am not sure how much mine was but I think around £1500 from the tit bits of info I've had from DP. It could be worth £1.50 for all I care - the fact he proposed means more than any ring ever. Soppy.

£45.
Am stunned at some of these amounts Shock

Paddingtonthebear · 10/09/2016 22:48

Mine was about £1800 but as I said earlier there was no engagement ring and our wedding cost less than £200 Grin

Sparklesilverglitter · 10/09/2016 22:50

I believe mine was around £1900

Pinkheart5915 · 10/09/2016 22:52

Last time mine was valued it was £9000- gorgeous ring it is too DH picked well

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 10/09/2016 22:54

5k for my engagement ring and about 850 for my wedding ring but I adore them both.
It wasn't as much as a month of DH's wage, but I think it was too much money as it was and it would have been madness to spend more.
That said, the stone is absolutely gorgeous and I don't think it's too flashy a piece of jewellery.

And I love my wedding band all the more as I'm a maths enthusiast and it's a Möbius strip

£45. And my wedding ring was free as it had been my Granny's. (I'm a total cheapskate)

Daytona79 · 10/09/2016 23:00

£3500 and £1500 for wedding band

HeddaGarbled · 10/09/2016 23:03

£120 in 1987. Worth about £400 now. Flabbergasted by all these several thousand pound ones. I assumed those sort of prices were for celebs and rich people not for ordinary people.

MadisonAvenue · 10/09/2016 23:06

I didn't mention my wedding band when I posted about my engagement ring but it was about $33 from a wholesale jeweler on Broadway, it was sold by weight.
