How much did your engagement ring cost?

Sorry for the nosy thread but I'm genuinely intrigued.. I see huge rocks, cute little numbers and they're all beautiful but I often wonder how people afford them and what's considered a 'normal' amount to spend? I know it used to be months salary in the old days.. Is that still the case?

It cost the same as a months rent at the time. Half carat 3 stone rubover setting. It's now worth double what we paid for it - we had our money pooled as family money long before engagement. My wedding ring is my gran's.

I'd love to see pictures of the rings that are upwards of 20k!

£85 in 1975, a ruby surrounded by diamonds.
I had it valued about 20 years ago at £350 but no idea what it's worth now.
I'd hate to have one costing £££ in case I lost it.

£30, Victrorian solitaire bought 40 years ago. We were both students! Wedding ring thick 22ct gold £30 as well. Things were a lot cheaper in those days!
DH bought me an Edwardian eternity ring for our 20 th wedding anniversary. It was the most expensive out of the three.

I have inherited some fab rings, but obviously these are my most precious. I was flattered when DIL wanted an engagement ring just like mine. They went to Tiffanys, I bet it cost a lot more!

No idea!! Wouldn't want to know, not very romantic. I guess you can't avoid knowing if you help choose though.

Between £900 and £1000, I know because we went to get it together including my DD, but can't remember the exact price as there where a few with similar prices.
I don't suit solitsires so looove this one.

He took out a credit card, which hit maxed leading up to our wedding and then he had to go into a trust deed as we couldn't afford the payments as well as mortgage when i dropped to mat pay.
The ring was one of the debts to go into the trust deed !
Luckily I still have it, he's lost his platinum band

Mine was about £1250 I think...... It was tagged at £1400 but I haggled them down, much to my DH's disgust! my wedding band was £80.

My first engagement ring came from Tiffany's NYC. It now rests quietly in its box after the demise of my first marriage. My second ring (pictured) was a gift from my MIL. She won it on a cruise. She was invited into a Manhattan shop to pick out the diamond ring she wanted when she arrived home. This was sometime in 1975. She put it away for her eldest son to give to his bride to be. I was the happy recipient.

No idea but certainly under £500.

DP proposed 3 weeks ago (we've been together 8 years) and totally cocked up the proposal (dog jumped up, knocked the ring box out of his hand and he spent the next 15 mins fishing under the kitchen counter for it!

The ring is utterly perfect though and completely to my taste, he's got excellent taste and I couldn't care less what he paid for it :)

I refused an engagement and wedding ring.

£0. I don't have one as we couldn't find one we liked and it seemed like a pointless extravagance and the insurance costs were astronomical.

Now I am older and wiser I am pleased I don't have one. I think it's patriarchal bullshit and as a feminist I just cannot buy into it.

Dh and I wear plain platinum wedding bands.

Mine was about £700. So less than a months salary and actually a lot less than DH had budgeted for, but - having been into every jeweller in Hatton Garden just to make sure - it was the one I really liked, so there was no point spending more on something I didn't like as much!

3 or 4K I think - vintage diamond and beautiful. However I never wear it. I have a few things of that sort of value through family but tend to wear mid range silver stuff more - less stressful. My most wearable pricey gift is a posh watch (1-2 k I guess). I'd spend where you'll really enjoy it!

Mine was $1200, we got it in the diamond district of New York, they were in recession and I think just wanted a sale, when we got home I had to get valued for insurance purposes and it was valued at £3500.

The insurance isn't astronomical at all, I added it to our home insurance, including loss I think its about £15 - £20 per year on top of the normal policy.

This was about £30 for the set from QVC. Diamonique and platinum clad. Love seeing everyone's pictures :) I didn't want something expensive as I lose everything. I know it can be insured etc but they would think I was at it with the amount of times I lose things. This is my second ring, lost my first one five years ago (that was also a cheapie)

First engagement the ring cost £75 from Argos, but I loved it. When we split up I was gutted to not wear the ring any more.

My husband bought my current engagement ring from Samuels and paid about £50 - we were skint with a baby on the way so I didn't care about the value. He has since bought me an eternity ring and two wedding rings from the Jewellery quarter in Birmingham (second wedding ring because he hid the first one as a joke then couldn't remember where!). All three have been made specifically for me and my first wedding ring matched his own. The most recent wedding ring was about £300.

For me it's not about the value or even what the ring looks like, it's what it represents and although we could afford much more valuable rings now I wouldn't want to upgrade.

My engagement ring cost six months's salary. Seriously! I planned it too much, I think. It was a few years ago.

Hotel in Crete. Romantic, on the east coast near Agios Nikolais. Near, "The Island", if you have read the book.

Watched the Sun rise. Breakfast, then we snorkelled.

We held octopus and watched dolphins. Then went back to the bungalow and swam in the pool. Made love, in missionary and spoons. Still remember that moment. Well, when the maid came in to clean and we were....uff.....

Then that evening, after our meal overlooking the sea, the waiter from the bar produced a small overnight bag . We walked on the beach, by the bungalow and a kind man just happened to have a boat to take us for a sunset trip round the small shallow bay.

To the yacht moored in the deep bit in the middle on the edge.

And we sailed overnight to Santorini.

That's it really.

But not really

Because, that was just the start...
