How much did your engagement ring cost?

Sorry for the nosy thread but I'm genuinely intrigued.. I see huge rocks, cute little numbers and they're all beautiful but I often wonder how people afford them and what's considered a 'normal' amount to spend? I know it used to be months salary in the old days.. Is that still the case?

Mine was £700 in 2008. White gold, three squares with a rubover setting with round stones in each. Very Art Deco. At the time I showed my husband a few that I liked and he picked this one. They were all in the region of £500-£1000. I like cluster rings not solitaires so this helped keep the cost down.

I treated myself to another ring last summer (why not?!) and I pretty much wear that now instead oft original ring. The new ring was £1200 and is another Art Deco style.

Madbengalmum · 11/09/2016 14:38

About 22k ten years ago.

MumiTravels · 11/09/2016 14:58

My wedding, engagement and half eternity total up to £220. I would have happily had a £10 silver ring though.

Sandyknickers · 11/09/2016 15:05

£250, second hand, I didn't want new gold or diamonds because of how unethical the diamond trade is.

ButtMuncher · 11/09/2016 15:12

£400 - absolutely no way I could have let him spend anymore, I'm clumsy and forgetful and tbh, you could give any amount and people would nod and say "lovely" so the thought of him spending £££ on it just wasn't something I was into. He earns plenty enough, which is why I prefer the fact we spent little on it and put money away for a house/car. The same philosophy is being applied to the wedding - I can't bear to spend a lot on one day.

Tiggeryoubastard · 11/09/2016 15:16

Just over £1000 in 1988. Art Deco step cut emerald and diamonds. And it was cheap because a friend of exh mum was a jeweller and went to a trade fair with exh. It was a bit more than he wanted to pay but it was, apparently, unmissable. Utterly beautiful ring. Not overly large stones but very high quality. Very very classy piece of jewellery. It's worth a fortune now, ddil has it and wears it a lot. Still love seeing it on her.

TaylorSwiftMakesMyShitItch · 11/09/2016 19:50

Mine was valued at and insured for £20,000 but cost around £11k. He chose the diamond from Hatton Garden and had it made there. It's the most beautiful ring I've ever seen and makes me smile every time I look at it.

MrTCakes · 11/09/2016 20:48

Mine was about 6k (divorced now but still have it). I was never fussed on it as it wasn't 'me' and I plan to sell it to pay my college fees. Does anyone have any advice on the best route for selling?

OhTheRoses I love yours!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 11/09/2016 20:53

22k!!!! Need to see that one!!!

Maybe a year ago there was an ace engagement ring thread with tons of pics, that was the best.

Mine was £3.5k I think, 5 or 6 years ago. It's not one of a kind but unusual and never seen another like it (or as nice as it :-p ). It's perfect but that's because I was very unsubtle and drew it for DH, just in case he ever fancied proposing Grin

coursedarlin · 11/09/2016 21:03

I think mine was about £150 as that was all we could afford but he designed me a beautiful ring for our first anniversary with our birth stones and names on with a message on the inside. We did get married 5 weeks after proposing though so it was all very much what we could afford!

Just over £3k. It's a Tiffany Lucida ring which we chose together, the diamond is small but near enough perfectly formed. My wedding ring was a plain Lucida band to go with it and I have since been given an eternity ring which matches them both beautifully, which I think was about £4k.

I absolutely love my rings and think they're timeless too.

rhuhbarb4 · 11/09/2016 21:11

My engagement ring was £1200 it is 2 carat diamond cluster set in yellow gold. This is my second ring as I became allergic to my first one that was a blue diamond solitaire with 2 clear diamonds either side and was brought in America for $2500. My engagement rings were ridiculously expensive but my wedding bad and eternity rings aren't.

Mirandawest · 11/09/2016 21:12

Mine cost about £600. Not as much as a month of DHs salary. He wanted to soend more than I thought he should, but he won. I do love it Smile

MirandaWest · 11/09/2016 21:17

Is a sapphire and a lovely deep shade of blue.

Why thank you Mr Teacakes. I'd say Christies South Ken. I've my eye on their sales for my silver wedding gift.

MurunB · 11/09/2016 21:28

At a guess, about 2p? It was the plastic ring from around the top of a water bottle. I still have it but will refrain from posting a photo of it.

He did offer to buy me a proper one but when we went to the jewellers to look for one, the shop woman asked if we were getting engaged because I was pregnant. I wasn't. Rude. I was obviously retaining a lot of water that day.

That was eight years ago and I still haven't bought a proper one. The woman put me right off!

MrsRaymondReddington · 11/09/2016 21:28

£25k....although I was definitely not expecting something that expensive!

Greenteandchives · 11/09/2016 21:38

My original one was £100. We didn't have much money. It was stolen a few years ago so we replaced it with a big fuck off diamond from Hatton Garden. I would rather have my old one back though. I often wonder where it is now. Sad

PrimalLass · 11/09/2016 21:42

About £1200 I think.

Purpleboa · 11/09/2016 21:42

Bloody hell I'm amazed at some of the figures on here! 25k...Really?? I'd love the thing up in a safe cos I'd be terrified of losing it!
Mine cost around 400, wedding ring 500. We had just bought a house, I'd just lost my job and we had a wedding to pay for. A month's salary was not an option and I wouldn't have wanted it to be. Would far rather money went into giving us the amazing wedding that we had, and into getting us the house we now have.

ILikeThatSong123 · 11/09/2016 22:09

I didn't want one as we were quite hard up then. Still, husband insisted that he wanted to buy one. We were doing some casual shopping one day, he took me to a jewellers and asked me to choose a ring there and then. He's very spontaneous like that Smile.
Husband is English but I'm foreign origin, and neither of us have any Irish connection whatsoever. But at the time the Irish Claddagh rings were totally new to me (I was new in the UK too) and I loved the image of a heart being given to someone so I chose a Claddagh ring as an engagement ring. I can't remember how much it cost at the time but cant be too much. I would not have wanted him to spend too much as we were trying very hard to save. Anyway that ring felt so right.
Later on after we were married for some time, he bought me a topaz ring because I loved the light blue colour of topaz. Again not sure of the price but I guess it was under £1000. We were not traditional in that sense.

pointythings · 11/09/2016 22:11

£0. DH proposed on Christmas Eve, we planned to get married late April the following year. We had been together 5 years at that point. Engagement rings seemed a bit pointless so we decided not to bother. Our wedding rings were about £60 each because we wanted something that was robust enough for our lifestyle at the time - which involved rock climbing, potholing and all kinds of outdoor stuff. If the ring got lost, we didn't want it to be a disaster.

We are still together 18 years later.

I'm amazed how so many people know what their rings cost. I never asked, it looked lovely and was so surprised to be asked that the price tag didn't enter conversation
