How much did your engagement ring cost?

Sorry for the nosy thread but I'm genuinely intrigued.. I see huge rocks, cute little numbers and they're all beautiful but I often wonder how people afford them and what's considered a 'normal' amount to spend? I know it used to be months salary in the old days.. Is that still the case?

£7700 it makes my heart sing every time I look at it, absolutely love it.

redexpat · 10/09/2016 21:14

It cost a month's wages of a telephone operator in about 1936. Grandad had EXCELLENT taste.

Lalaloopsyscaresme · 10/09/2016 21:16

Yeah mine is so yuk Hmm

emwithme · 10/09/2016 21:17

Nothing, it was DH's great-grandma's ring (and it fitted perfectly so felt like fate). We had to have it valued to insure it and it's apparently worth £4k.

elQuintoConyo · 10/09/2016 21:18

Not very much off ebay. Sapphire flanked by diamonds. 150 years old. Perfect for me.

The '3 months' wage' bullshit was invented by DeBeers.

weegiemum · 10/09/2016 21:19

£27! 9ct gold and solitaire cubic zirconia from Ratners. Dh was a medical student at the time, so was all we could afford. I wear it every day and love it still. We got engaged in Jan 1993.

mrschatty · 10/09/2016 21:20

I would have LOVED an inherited ring. I feel the romance and story would have meant so much...
My GPS are still wearing their rings (which I feel blessed about) and DH grandmothers he hardly knew so there was no sentiment and he has no clue what's happened to them.

Blodplod · 10/09/2016 21:20

Thank you all for such quick replies! Sorry to offend Rosie.. But as I said it was just an intrigued enquiry! Nothing more, nothing less.. 😃

Mine was about £3,500 but the jeweller was a friend so DH got quite a big discount. It was much more than a month of DH's salary and was more than I thought he should have spent but for some reason he was desperate to get me the best ring he could possibly afford. I do love it and I get lots of compliments about it but I did think at the time it was a bit much. But you wear it every day for the rest of your life in theory don't you - so the cost per wear is minuscule Wink

SellFridges · 10/09/2016 21:21

I think it was about £850. Bought in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham, so would have cost more on the High St.

It's a compass set, princess cut. I think it's 0.8kt.

Deckthehallswithjammydodgers · 10/09/2016 21:21

£200 17 years ago the question about how people afford big rocks I know some people who have got big stupid ones on the never never is rather spend less and actually own it Grin

OhTheRoses · 10/09/2016 21:22

£2200 in 1990. Now valued at £4500. Sapphire and diamond. Very of its time now. DH wanted to buy me a better one this summer but I said no.

astormgivenflesh · 10/09/2016 21:24

8k and I love it. Wedding ring was so cheap though! I kept losing them for some reason so just have a plain silver band

I didn't get engaged either, so no engagement ring. Wedding ring cost £30 & I rarely wear it.
DH bought me an eternity ring after 3rd DC & I've no idea what it cost/costs. Is lovely as has three small star diamonds & my children's names engraved on the inside.

MadisonAvenue · 10/09/2016 21:25

£70, bought from the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham 28 years ago. I love it but never wear it as I don't wear gold now.

QueenCuntyFlippers · 10/09/2016 21:26

Just over 1k

It's platinum but with a relatively small but beautiful emerald cut diamond.

ItsTimeForDuggee · 10/09/2016 21:28

It cost nothing as it was my grandmas

Blodplod · 10/09/2016 21:29

Deckthehalls, I'm with you on that one! Id rather have a £5 ring I 'owned' rather than pay a credit card/loan company the interest!

Not sure but about £150 I think. He knew I'd go nuts if he spent a fortune.

I can't even imagine wearing a £4K ring Shock my wedding ring cost £700 and I'm nervous enough about that!

I don't wear my engagement ring but my wedding ring has diamonds and is very me.

GinIsIn · 10/09/2016 21:31

The 'real one' was my grandmother's and is probably worth a packet as it's a massive rock, but I've only ever worn it once, to please my parents. We bought a £500 stand in that I wear every day instead, and I love it!

Blodplod · 10/09/2016 21:32

Astorngivenflesh.. The ring is fabulous! As are you're beautiful nails / you need decent nails to keep up with that beauty!

£625, about 20 years ago. Central sapphire with two smaller flanking diamonds I yellow gold. I still love it.

Flisspaps · 10/09/2016 21:32

£125, antique (it's the middle one)

useyourimagination · 10/09/2016 21:33

About £400 I think - it was a long time ago. It wasn't quite a month's wages but it did seem expensive at the time. I love it and wouldn't change it for the world even though the stones are very small.

Crystal15 · 10/09/2016 21:33

Just over 1k I think. It's beautiful yet small and simple with a really good quality diamond. Needs a good clean now though! Worm it every day for 2.5 years :)
