Em (looks sheepish), what does 'SS' refer to? Hate to miss out on something controversial (shuffles out again).

I think the other problem with 'coloured' is that it is from a white perspective - those other than 'us', all of 'them' lumped together.

Oh dear TC sorry to offend you so much! PC or political correctness, its just too dictatorial as a concept and I believe was invented in the USA as a way of staving off people using discriminatory terms at work and so avoiding legal claims for discrimination. All well and good if that works, but surely it is PC itself that can be used as a cover-up for an attitude problem. Most of us would never use terms like cripple or spastic in any situation. Black people have reclaimed the word nigger as a pride thing, as we all know from gansta rap. I think political correctness can be used a form of control so that we are afraid to speak and that is censorship and therefore, in my view, wrong. Forced good manners cannot replace educating people anyway.

At school one of the Nigerian girls did a fantastic reading along the lines of 'You're white - but when you're cold you're blue, when you're in the sun you're brown, when you're burnt you're red, when you're ill you're green etc. etc. (can't remember it all? - when I'm cold I'm black, when I'm in the sun I'm black, when I'm burnt I'm black etc. - and you call me coloured?

I've just put "The origins of political correctness" in my address bar and found some interesting articles.
