Who honestly thinks that more offence can be caused here on an internet site that down the pub?
I can't be the only one to disagree.
I was down the pub the other day where a man was, within my hearing, getting great amusement from encouraging his child to sing a song about a nigger on a woodpile. It made me sick. I think I am as normal and have as average values as most people. Internet sites are completely different from verbal communication.

Norma, I don't think you got the point. By saying "down the pub" I meant "with friends". Surely you speak more freely when you know your audience and they know you. I know I am more non-pc with my friends because ultimately they know me and they know that although I can make a flippant joke sometimes, I am not a racist/homophobic etc etc......AT ALL! People I know wouldn't necessarily know that and they might have other experiences from me. For example, Doormat makes the point that there are many people here with SN children who might take great offense to the word "cripple". Personally, I too think it's a horrible word to use in any context!
As a general rule I think you should be more careful when you write things down, because you cannot dampen the effect of what you are saying by facial expressions and tone of voice.

aloha · 04/12/2003 10:38

Following up this side-issue. I do think words are important. We don't use words like Nigger or Wog (or at least most people don't) as a matter or basic human respect. Same goes for cripple, spastic as a term of abuse. The development of more respectful, decent relationships IS related to language IMO. Denigrating that process by sneering at 'pc' language is sometimes a cover for more unpleasant attitudes.

ThomCat · 04/12/2003 10:44

Wow, so me saying that I didn't like the words coloured, cripple etc and saying I personally preferred alternative words and mentioning 'PC' riles people enough to say that's a form of facisim and even using the word Nazi (!!)and it's all a load of bollocks. I really don't think I'm a Nazi and I don't think it's a load of bollocks for me to prefer to have people not use the word cripple etc. I would be incredibly hurt and outraged if anyone ever used that word around my daughter and would think they were ignorant and frankly disgusting people. If that makes me a fascistic extreme leftie then so be it.

M2T · 04/12/2003 10:52

CAM - How ridiculous and provocative is you post???
Thats right... I refuse to let someone get away with disrimination due to them being a black lesbian!!

Therefore I'm heading toward being a Nazi!! FFS!

Great posts by Custy, Aloha and Thomcat BTW!

I think this discussion is actually quite interesting, despite probably upsetting Dadslib as it's on his thread (but you started it dadslib,) )
I think it really proves my point that we all interpret things differently. The way I read Dadslib comments was what he really meant "all minorities rolled into one" and I understood the type of person he was referring to. To me that was not putting black nor lesbians down. I just don't think that's the kind of way you express yourself when you don't know your audience. For example, black and gay people are not always so pc about themselves. I sit next to a black guy at work and we are always joking around. When something annoying happens, I might say "oh, I am sure it's because you are black" as a joke. Not very pc and of course I wouldn't dream of saying it if we didn't know eachother so well and were compeletly comfortable around eachother. He has told me the only person who can get away with telling him a "racist" joke is me, because I am so obviously not a racist in any way.

FairyMum · 04/12/2003 11:13

By the way, in case somebody asks why I tell racist jokes. I am sure we all know a couple of good ones and I don't think there is anything that cannot be laughed at if it's done in the right way. The Doctors I know, for example, have a morbid sense of humour.....

Ahem... I think you'll find we slaughtered you at Bannockburn.

The Campbell/MacDonald thing was an internal dispute and I've never heard of the battle of BLAH BLAH BLAH!
Perhaps thats what we should name this thread!!!

Thank God (if I'm allowed to say that!)

A much needed bit of levity to lighten the atmosphere :0
