Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like The Archers to be wall to wall election conversations for the next month, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Time flies when you're enjoying yourself. Is Freddie's amateur detecting going to bite him on the bum?

LillianGish · 05/06/2024 14:13

Checking in. Great thread title!

EBearhug · 05/06/2024 14:22

Thank you.

Have yet to establish whether anyone in new job listens to TA. They don't know that about me yet, either, to be fair.

BerylBillings · 05/06/2024 15:05

Signing in. Thanks for new thread. Archers

TheUsualChaos · 05/06/2024 15:35

Thank you 😊 Yes very fitting title, lots for SW to wrap up over the coming weeks, months.....years!

TheUsualChaos · 05/06/2024 15:40

I think it must be Rochelle who has done something terrible and Joy just doesn't want people in her new life to know about it. A trauma coping mechanism?

The Titchener land purchase holds all sorts of boat rocking possibilities for the future, is it set to be left to Jack one day? I can't really remember what happened with that tbh.

TottersDeterminedlyTowardsThePollingStation · 05/06/2024 15:55

Thank you @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g - loose ends is a great opening thought!

The land has already been left in trust to Jack, @TheUsualChaos - though his uncle has allowed the Grundys to continue to use it for the time being. Can’t recall the details.

Has Rex returned yet?

Fink · 05/06/2024 15:56

Thanks for the new thread!

@EBearhug , how to you intend to find out? Is there a secret handshake that I haven't heard of? Or a code word, like 'Emma is cutting trees today'?

If it were me, I would bring along a marmalade cake to share and see if anyone commented. Or I might engineer a conversation where custard came up, and then announce that you won't eat 'shop bought muck', it has to be homemade. To be fair, that last one could backfire!

I don't know. I suspect there aren't many there. We have discussed pizza toppings and bowling.

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2024 16:12

Oh - marmalade cake. I tried Dunnes, Aldi, Lidl, Supervalu and the posh deli. No lime marmalade - lemon yes, three fruit yes, various types and texture of orange, yes. Brands - Chivers, Fruitfield, Bonne Maman, Folláin, a fancy posh-deli name to indicate they made it in their own jam room (which does exist, I've seen it), various deluxe type branding by the shops.

It used to be stocked in the olden days (Roses I think) so marmalade export is clearly yet another casualty of Brexit - didn't one of your dafter politicians suggest that 'innovative jam' was going to be the savior of the British economy? - not much chance if no-one will do the paperwork needed to get it out of the country.

I also failed on parsnips, but they'll be back in season in a couple of months.

TottersDeterminedlyTowardsThePollingStation · 05/06/2024 16:18

Forgot to say congratulations on the new job, @EBearhug. Obviously if your new colleagues mention any TV soap, that gives you an opening. But otherwise you might want to find out if they’re aware of the existence of ‘radio’ as a thing, first … Current affairs are bound to come up sooner or later, at which point you could drop in something heard on Today, or More or Less or whatever. Comedy also offers possibilities. Pizza and bowling are rather rarer on R4.

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2024 16:24

Set Barwick Green as your ringtone.

and yes, congratters on the job.

Anneofa1000days · 05/06/2024 16:33

Just checking in. Eating my Roses lime marmalade on toast with a lovely cup of English Breakfast tea. Somethings you can eat anytime of day.

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2024 16:38

I'd gnash my teeth in envy but they'd probably fall out.

Chemenger · 05/06/2024 16:43

I get my lime marmalade in Aldi. It’s not always there. It’s the only marmalade I like.

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2024 16:46

Aldi in which country? I have no doubt as to the widespread availability of lime marmalade in the UK.

Does Ireland have farm shops? I get lime marmalade at one of those, if I cba to make it myself.

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2024 17:31

No. I checked out the Countrywomen's market, but no lime marmalade there (nor has there ever been, it is a minority taste).

I'll just have to make some other kind of cake.

JanglyBeads · 05/06/2024 17:39

Love lime and or lemon marmalade. Hate the orange : standard sort.
Thanks for new thread.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/06/2024 17:50

If you had occasion to go to Belfast or Derry or Antrim, Dean, might you be able to get lime marmalade there and smuggle it back across the border? Surely there must be an opening here for enterprising marmalade smugglers?

Scotland

Chemenger · 05/06/2024 17:57

I’m coming to Dublin in July, but unfortunately I’m flying so can’t import lime marmalade in my hand luggage. I’ve seen too many people lured into buying jam in the shops before security in Edinburgh then having it taken off them. If you can spread it it’s a liquid, apparently.

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2024 18:23

It is a liquid. I could tell you a 45-year-old story about a young student going back to college in January with a jar of her mother's home-made marmalade, an overhead luggage rack, and a man in a sheepskin coat, but I won't.

hanahsaunt · 05/06/2024 18:26

Dunnes claim to have it. But you could try here
