Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you long to hear Pip again, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish and @PersephonePromotesEquanimity for the title suggestions.

Current events: as @Bailey0703 has astutely spotted, it's Anti-Slavery Day tomorrow - could this herald the beginning of the end of the horses storyline? I do hope so. Horrible stuff, but what a blow for Kirsty. They're laying on the dramatic irony with trowel at the moment.

What do we think will happen to Alice and Chris? I can't see this pregnancy going to term and ending well. Sad I don't think the marriage will survive either, giving Brian a chance to revisit his classic line about having to treat this as Alice's starter marriage. Grin

Will Elizabeth end up on a date with Vince Casey? That would put the cat among the pigeons at Lower Loxley.

Over to you ...

I imagine vince is about 5 ft 9, strong, slightly overweight due to good food and no great interest in the gym. Not a looker but gives the impression that he wouldn’t disappoint in the bedroom.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/10/2020 17:23

This is more my idea of Vince, although the accent is wrong, of course.

Oh my! Some excellent pointers on here to help me reassess my thoughts on VC. I need to be a bit careful or he will end up looking like a cross between Mr Rochester and Gregory Peck in my head now - shooting into my top five with no problem at all and nudging ahead of Harrison on the Ambridge pin-up league table...

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/10/2020 17:43

I found a real picture of the actor but won't link as people don't like that. He's OK, wouldn't necessarily put me off if he had a good sense of humour, better looking than I imagined Vince to be.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/10/2020 17:46

I see from IMDB that the Vince Casey actor (Tony Turner) played Sister Evangelina's brother in Call the Midwife - an alcoholic tramp, coincidentally also called Vincent. I only have the vaguest memories of that episode.

I’m glad I’m not the only one.I really enjoyed Front row on Friday. The actor who plays Gavin is attractive.

UntamedWisteria · 24/10/2020 18:47

gasp0de's photo is how I have been imagining him.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 25/10/2020 10:14

Listening again - I suspect Vince didn't set up a (is proxy the right word?) date with Elizabeth - because the SWs haven't generally shown themselves to be as sharp as posters on this thread.

But he definitely likes her (rather than just the thought of LL) - the 'unwarranted' shows that.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 25/10/2020 10:19

Ohhh ... Are they laying the groundwork for the tiny Brookfield heiress to have ... behavioural issues? (Rather hope not as realistic detail isn't really in the SW's skill set.)

Or are they acknowledging that being a parent to any small child can have its moments, you can't shut them away in their bedrooms or Ben's cupboard?Grin
MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2020 10:39

He looks nothing like Mr Rochester or Gregory Peck! a smile sweeps over Mike's fizzog as she dreamily thinks of GP

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2020 10:42

Mr Rochester looks like David Morrissey, who is a fine actor and easy on the eye to boot.

Roysnewshirt · 25/10/2020 11:32

I was clearly getting carried away! Obviously no one within a million miles of Borchester will EVER resemble the gorgeous Gregory Peck! So lovely to meet a fellow admirer @MikeUniformMike!

Alas, I fear @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g is on the right track! VC does have a certain air of Cracker about him. I wonder if I can grow to love him...

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2020 11:55

Mmmm! Sigh!

Roysnewshirt · 25/10/2020 12:14

Mmmm! Sigh!

When I was in LA last year, I actually went to visit GP’s tomb in the catholic cathedral. I took some beautiful white roses. It was actually very moving as I have been a fan forever (since I watched the GP season in about 1982 when I was 11). I was surprised not to see any other mourning fans there at the time (he was such a big star) but my husband - always one to bring me back down to earth - gently pointed out that most of his admirers would be either dead or unable to walk any more.

  • this might all be too much information for some- sorry for oversharing...
MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2020 12:21

How nice of you Roy.

They were real stars in those days. I am not dead and can walk quite far without an aid.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/10/2020 13:10

I liked Gregory Peck too. I too am alive and ambulant.

My all-time favourite was James Mason, but I have a great fondness for Cary Grant and James Stewart.

Essentially you've summarised how we survived wet Sunday afternoons in the 60s into the 70s. Grin There were of course some great female film stars in that era -Katherine Hepburn at the top of my list
MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2020 13:24

Ooooooooklahoma! I liked Howard Keel esp. in Dallas.

Unless Lewis reappears, I'll have to fight Jill for Leonard.

Listening again - I suspect Vince didn't set up a (is proxy the right word?) date with Elizabeth - because the SWs haven't generally shown themselves to be as sharp as posters on this thread.

My reason for thinking that he did set it up was that when he saw her alone he came over and said "You've been stood up too," -- if he didn't have reason to know she had been stood up, because he'd stood her up himself, would even someone as brash and insensitive as he's been shown to be before and since have made that assumption? About a woman he had met precisely once for about two minutes?

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2020 13:53

Of course he did. I'm sure you can set up an account with no photo or you could use someone else's photo.
I remember a then friend setting up a blind date and used a very old photo - about 18 yrs out of date. The blind date wasn't impressed.
There was no second date.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 25/10/2020 14:06

Well, I'll be delighted if it proves to be so!

But out of curiosity (being entirely ignorant of dating apps) how would he have found her? I'm unshakeably assuming that her connection to LL is not apparent on Tinder or whatever - so he wouldn't be able to cross reference Google and POF ... Would he just have had to scroll through every possible app to find a middle aged 'Lizzie from Borchester'?

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/10/2020 14:27

I did an image search on "Tony Turner". First pic said "jailed for two years after headbutting PC..." Grin

Adding "actor" to my search turned up the REAL Tony Turner. Agreed, rather too good looking, especially in his National Theatre pic. But there's another picture, showing him older and less touched-up, and that is a possibility.
