Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you long to hear Pip again, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish and @PersephonePromotesEquanimity for the title suggestions.

Current events: as @Bailey0703 has astutely spotted, it's Anti-Slavery Day tomorrow - could this herald the beginning of the end of the horses storyline? I do hope so. Horrible stuff, but what a blow for Kirsty. They're laying on the dramatic irony with trowel at the moment.

What do we think will happen to Alice and Chris? I can't see this pregnancy going to term and ending well. Sad I don't think the marriage will survive either, giving Brian a chance to revisit his classic line about having to treat this as Alice's starter marriage. Grin

Will Elizabeth end up on a date with Vince Casey? That would put the cat among the pigeons at Lower Loxley.

Over to you ...

There was a closeness to Jack and Peggy for a long time before they got married. She was his secretary for a long while, and helped him with both Valerie and Hazel.

LillianGish · 23/10/2020 20:03

Well I think if anything happens between Elizabeth and Vince it will be a slow burn - these are just the very earliest sparks.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/10/2020 20:21

LillianGish, I am fairly sure we know Vince has been divorced more than once; he may be a widower as well.

Perzackerly, MollyButton. Peggy knew Jack quite well (and turned him down more than once, too) before agreeing to marry him.

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 20:55

@ErrolTheDragon, yes, in a way, but that is how it is.
I grew up in that community, and that was the mentality back then, and when farming friends had a second son they expressed concern about needing to get a second farm - daughters would be encouraged to 'get ahead' (usually get a nice job like be a teacher or nurse) or bag themselves a farmer, ideally locally.

A new baby is a girl or a son - note the terminology.

Someone like Emma would have been actively encouraged to bag herself a farmer. In my age group, she would probably have had a shotgun wedding. Once married, their PILs would live in fear of a divorce.

The thinking seems backward but I totally get it.
Hearing how people younger than me speak strikes me as odd, but knowing their parents, it would have been instilled in them from birth.

I've heard comments like 'he only married her to get his hands on the farm' said about farmer's daughters, usually from older generations.
That would be a real worry for someone like Jill, and probably Cowpat and Moany.

At least we heard about Pat&Tony discussing it.

I think this gave me a bit of a skewed view on marriage. I think we are sold a big fat lie with the true love, princess for a day view of marriage

Anyone still keep forgetting, it’s not on tonight. I’m always surprised when Front Row comes on instead.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 23/10/2020 21:41

Halloween Grin I refer you to my 19:05 post up-thread, MissEWeatherwax!

And tonight I was actually looking forward to hearing it, rather than just filling an habitual slot. Lack of TA leaves the rest of the evening all out of kilter.

TheSilveryPussycat · 23/10/2020 21:48

Yes, I had a Friday moment too.

LillianGish · 23/10/2020 22:13

And tonight I was actually looking forward to hearing it - me too. Which has to be a good sign.

Taswama · 23/10/2020 22:21

I was catching up on this thread earlier but stopped reading when the posting time was after 19:00 as I didn't want to spoil tonight's episode.
But then I remembered...

PoulePouletteEternellement · 23/10/2020 22:40

Christmas Day will be a Friday, too ... Haloween Sad

ErrolTheDragon · 23/10/2020 22:43

I'd have thought they'd have got the hang of how to do things well enough by now to ramp up to 5 episodes. Shift to first airing 2pm then repeat at 7, just have the omnibus on Sunday morning.

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 23:06

Talking of Corrie, if you look for Todd Grimshaw he might look like Gavin Moss.

impostersyndrome · 24/10/2020 08:22

@Roysnewshirt

I find Freddie interesting because that overwhelming entitlement and veneer and background enables him to get away with behaviour...

I don’t like VC but I very much enjoyed him pointing out to Freddie that he was not the one who had done time inside. The twins were insufferable yesterday. Lizzie needs to remind Lily of how she has tolerated her inappropriate choice in partner for more than a year now.

I would LOVE a denouement exposing CMR as the reason for Bethan’s estrangement with her Dad. Watching him slink off stage left with tail between legs would be just too glorious!

Oh yes, this fledgling romance has real potential!

Regarding Lizzie reminding Lily ..., did I imagine her saying to her mid telling off, that she hadn’t had a go at her for dating a married man? If only she had. Where is the slimy creep these days? I completely agree, I am so hoping to hear a denouement someday soon.

Maybe we should try it in AIBU and see how many people think it's the right way for Vince to have behaved, though. Perhaps I am simply too old-fashioned about basic manners, and behaviour in other people's houses

I think when you are invited to someone's house and treated to the appalling manners displayed by Freddie all obligations are off.

C8H10N4O2 · 24/10/2020 10:31

Anyone still keep forgetting, it’s not on tonight. I’m always surprised when Front Row comes on instead

Me too. Really should be used to it by now.

EBearhug · 24/10/2020 10:32

But it's also what Luzzie invited him for, at least to ask him questions and get them to back off - not that they knew all that.

C8H10N4O2 · 24/10/2020 10:58

They are both in business and struggling to bring up older children alone.

Yes it struck me they have more in common than it might appear from the outside.

Pretty much all we know from Vince is from David's whining after he was bettered in a business deal. David is incapable of thinking that anyone could actually be better than him so Vince "must" have made underhand deals. Vince then bettered him again on pricing for the wedding venue.

Have we heard any actual evidence of dishonesty or dodgy dealings outside of David's whining? Brian was much more philosophical about that abbatoir deal - not happy but accepted he had lost on that occasion and moved on.

Vince may yet turn out to be a future Jack.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2020 11:14

Vince does clearly enjoy yanking David's chain a bit, but can any of us blame him for that?

Roysnewshirt · 24/10/2020 11:15

Pretty much all we know from Vince is from David's whining after he was bettered in a business deal

I agree information is patchy though I remember him sounding a bit of a wide-boy in the the market scenes even before the slaughterhouse subplot kicked off.

One major problem I have is trying to imagine VC as vaguely fanciable. I am trying to recalibrate as I have been picturing him as being short, fat, slightly sweaty and balding with a heavy gold chain and chubby red cheeks (terrible stereotyping I know)...So now he is a potential love interest how am I meant to imagine him? Any clues/thoughts on what/who he might look like?

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/10/2020 11:34

To me Vince has the voice of an overweight smoker but then so does Justin and I know the actor doesn't look like that.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 24/10/2020 11:56

Vince ...

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/10/2020 13:50

Well that's not the picture I had! I can see Elizabeth's point of view if that's him.

LillianGish · 24/10/2020 16:05

The problem with being introduced to Vince on the radio hearing his voice and listening to him flashing the cash for his daughter’s wedding is that he immediately conjures up images (well for me at least) of the Harry Enfield’s Brummie with the catchphrase I am considerably richer than you. Couple that with his business - running a slaughterhouse - and he’s not a particularly attractive character. The fun of this storyline is turning that initial impression on its head. I certainly would never have had him down as love interest for Elizabeth when he first popped up, but When I listened to their evening together in the pub I could definitely see how it might work. So much more suitable than Roy Tucker, or Ifty the maths tutor. They can talk business, or parenting problems, they can have a laugh together... I need to redraw my mental image of him and overcome my prejudice against the Brummie accent.

165EatonPlace · 24/10/2020 16:54

Well how, strange is that, in my head VC looks like Barry McGuigan as he is now. Slim, small, constantly on the go. Duckin n divin'.
I hate seeing the actors in real life. They DO NOT look like that!!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2020 17:00

I've found a photo of the actor but he doesn't look like I'd imagined vince so I shan't post a link.Grin
