I stand corrected about Pat, it makes more sense now to hear her described as independent. As for my own DM - bitter, moi?ConfusedGrin

Gruach · 13/04/2016 13:23

As I see it Beaufort Tony and Pat have always been local aristocracy through Tony's father's relationship to Brookfield and the ten % share of Ambridge Farmers that Tony inherited from him (long since gone). And through the financial help Peggy and Jack received from Aunt Laura in the 60s which gave the family a degree of independence. They've never been entirely dependent on selling their labour.

As regards uncomplicated people - there's no model for them in Ambridge. Only the rich (landed) go away to university or for further training so they're the only ones who have the option of careers outside Ambridge - but they're also the ones with the greatest pull back to their own land in Ambridge. The poorer, (coming from less educated homes) young seem to eventually achieve some vocational skills - but usually only because they are offered the possibility of local, rural work - they never gain either experience or urban transferable skills so they're stuck - working for people who own land ...

I had a snort at the radio when Lillian and others mentioned Helen as a possible candidate for Business Woman of the Year.

Talking of which, the lunch is a golden opportunity for various Ambridge women to share their perceptions of Rob.

Just got my copy of Private Eye. I like this piece:

SHOCK TWIST TO MIDDLE-CLASS SOAP OPERA HAS NATION IN THRALL

For months, middle-class Britain has been glued to the most dramatic storyline in soap opera history.

What had listeners gripped to their Roberts radio as they sat in front of their kitchen Aga was the shocking disintegration of a seemingly happy relationship, which eventually exploded into bitter abuse and finally a terrifying act of violence.

The two leading characters kown to fans of the long-running saga as 'Boris' and 'Dave' had once seemed like the perfect couple.

They appeared to perfectly matched, coming from similar backgrounds and having similar views about almost everything.

But then their relationship began to take an increasingly ugly turn. Dave became 'controlling', patronising Boris, threatening and undermining him whenever he could.

Eventually, Boris could take it no more, and felt that he had to make a stand.

Listeners were taken aback by the episode in which Boris suddenly turned on his tormentor and stabbed him violently in the the back, shouting 'I want to Leave'...

Brilliant Grin

MrsArthurShappey · 13/04/2016 14:02

Wonderful! (and welcome back gasp)

Gruach · 13/04/2016 14:03

Fabulous!

glowfrog · 13/04/2016 14:08

Hahahaha!

AugustaFinkNottle · 13/04/2016 14:17

I can't remember - have we heard whether Pat or Tony have been able to talk to Helen at all? I assume she'd be allowed to phone and would presumably be desperate to know how Henry is?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 13/04/2016 14:30

Grin ha ha at that Private Eye piece.

Gruach · 13/04/2016 14:44

Aaargh! Just turned on R4's afternoon play to hear yet another charming, manipulative controlling man.

Excellent script but my heart's thumping a bit.

redshoeblueshoe · 13/04/2016 14:57

Gasp0 Grin

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 13/04/2016 14:59

Oh but wow that was good Gruach!

Gruach · 13/04/2016 15:23

Ye-es ... Kinda.

I heard the beginning but then my phone rang and when I turned it back on a horrible man was giving the woman grief over what she watched on TV while ironing. Took me a while to realise it was a different man - but he was so much a slightly less polished version of Rob.

Thanks to TA I can see myself becoming hyper-aware from now on of controlling-ness ...

The ballad of Helen Titchener

Wordsaremything · 13/04/2016 19:15

This whole journalists hanging round thing is so unrealistic. Unless there's something extra about it, they wouldn't be hanging around. and it looks like he's not even going to die.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/04/2016 19:17

Enjoyed that episode. Tempers fraying over competing egg producers! Emma fretting about her outfit for tomorrow. Susan passing on gossip as soon as she gets it. Environmental health inspection coming up. Josh pretending that he's revising for his A levels. That's the Archers I know and love. Smile

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/04/2016 19:18

The only disappointing bit was that it looks like Rob isn't going to die. Sad Hmm

Stickerrocks · 13/04/2016 19:21

Normal service is resumed. We can go back to one thread every couple of weeks again.

I only want Rob to die if he gets thoroughly exposed & Helen gets off scot free.

Wordsaremything · 13/04/2016 19:22

Gussie - fabulous link - love it!

EsmesBees · 13/04/2016 19:28

That was a better episode. Good to hear the news about Rob second hand and get a break from all the bridge farm drama. Also enjoyed Emma's nervous excitement about the dinner and Ed's quiet pride in his pesticide course. Felt like The Archers again.

AugustaFinkNottle · 13/04/2016 19:39

When the CA said something just before the beginning about a treat for Neil, was anyone else thinking "Chili"?

AugustaFinkNottle · 13/04/2016 19:40

But it did seem a bit odd to have Adam there saying not a word about Helen. After all, they're supposed to be quite close, and isn't he Henry's godfather?

2rebecca · 13/04/2016 19:42

I was thinking "S&BJ day from Susan?!"
Agree seemed odd for Adam not to mention her.
