Re-listening to it on the film, I think it got a bit complicated (or even complikated):
Feebs realised the Kate was in the room (Alex didn't because he was concentrating on, ahem, other things) so said to him to stop.
Kate only heard the "stop" bit and leapt to the wrong conclusion.

Travelledthe I think you may be a bit confused, the barn Kate wants is on Brian's land,Alex's barn is being rented from Brookfield ; Dave and Ruth's land.
