I want a five bed house for 350k - where can I get it?

I’m sick of living in a poky little house with no space for anything. I want to spread out, with a separate playroom for my 3 DC where I can put all their toys so the rest of the house doesn’t look like a total bombsite 24/7. I want a toilet that’s not right next to the bedroom or the kitchen so I don’t have to smell my DH’s disgusting smells or hear him doing a number 2 whilst I’m in bed or (worse) cooking. I want a big garden so I can shove the DC outside in the summer. I want lots of bedrooms so family can actually stay with US and not have to rent a crappy Airbnb or stay at a bed and breakfast down the road. I’d quite like a kitchen we can eat in plus two reception rooms on top so we’ve got lots of space for arts and crafts, music practice and other stuff.

The problem is, I have a budget of 300k and refuse to live in a modern property because I hate them. I also want to live somewhere stunningly beautiful and preferably on the coast. Work isn’t an issue - we can do that from anywhere.

Where can I go?

I love this one! Never heard of Maryport but it looks promising on StreetView. Does anyone know it?

The St Andrews one looks gorgeous too!

I think St Andrews in Scotland or North Wales would be more appealing than Maryport...

timetochangeyourlife · 14/12/2020 20:36

St Andrews is usually pretty expensive its a nice town so God knows what's wrong whit that house to make it that cheap!! You definitely need the home buyers report. The university does seem to dominate it oh and golf but lovely beaches.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 14/12/2020 20:46

Anywhere in Northern Ireland.

Cheap, brilliant schools (and very very cheap private primary education), friendly people and beautiful geography.

Rural SW Scotland. A 6 bedroom just up the road went for £130K but to be fair house prices are seriously low round here. A 4 bed modern detached bungalow is £85K right now.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 14/12/2020 20:54

The St Andrews house isn't actually in St Andrews, but further north, past the town of Leuchars. It's inside a riding school, in the middle of a forest and only has a small front garden and allocated parking.

Great for some people, not so much for others.

yeOldeTrout · 14/12/2020 21:05

Whitby?

Run it as a BnB except when extended family visit.

" Stone built period cottage " near Whitby.

Probably too modern for OP.

I agree rural SW Scotland is very cheap or if you fancy living in a town in SW Scotland and you have eccentric eclectic taste there's always this bargain!!

I actually really love it! What is Dumfries like?

Northern Ireland! Stunninh scenery, slow pace of life, decent wifi in most areas although the weather can be iffy, but no worse than NE england or scotland in winter.

Mogtheforgetfulmum · 14/12/2020 22:22

Northumberland- miles of beautiful coast. Check out the houses in Alnwick or Morpeth. There are loads of beautiful period properties with 5/6 bed for between 325-400k

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 14/12/2020 22:25

North East England coast, N Yorkshire coast or Wales I would recommend!

timetochangeyourlife · 14/12/2020 22:25

I don't know it overly well but I dont think Dumfires is anything remarkable although probably no worse than most suggested on here. It has a shopping centre with the usual shops a supermarket etc a train station with a regular service to Glasgow although not the quickest journey. The surrounding countryside is lovely and a significantly less popular tourist destination than the West Coast and you're close to the sea. If you've relatives in the England it's much more doable journey than say Oban. If for example you're coming up the M6/M74 you basically turn left at Gretna as you cross the border.

Beautiful views. 20 mins to the coast. There’s a boot room between the downstairs loo and the kitchen. Plenty of reception space.

That house is amazing.

Some really lovely period properties on this thread with loads of character. I would add decent broadband to your wish list though, especially if you might be WFH ?

If you want. a town you might prefer Kirkcudbright or Castle Douglas rather than Dumfries both are a bit further along the coast they are smaller but have a range of shops although no train station This one is coming in under your budget there may be a reason why it seems very cheap even for that area.

AHFemale · 14/12/2020 23:07

Oooo this is like the Mumsnet version of Escape to the Country.
Thank you for this post OP, I have enjoyed looking at a few of the links. Some lovely properties. Interesting to see what you get for your money in different parts of the uk. Good luck with your search. Smile
