I want a five bed house for 350k - where can I get it?

I’m sick of living in a poky little house with no space for anything. I want to spread out, with a separate playroom for my 3 DC where I can put all their toys so the rest of the house doesn’t look like a total bombsite 24/7. I want a toilet that’s not right next to the bedroom or the kitchen so I don’t have to smell my DH’s disgusting smells or hear him doing a number 2 whilst I’m in bed or (worse) cooking. I want a big garden so I can shove the DC outside in the summer. I want lots of bedrooms so family can actually stay with US and not have to rent a crappy Airbnb or stay at a bed and breakfast down the road. I’d quite like a kitchen we can eat in plus two reception rooms on top so we’ve got lots of space for arts and crafts, music practice and other stuff.

The problem is, I have a budget of 300k and refuse to live in a modern property because I hate them. I also want to live somewhere stunningly beautiful and preferably on the coast. Work isn’t an issue - we can do that from anywhere.

Where can I go?

I bought a lovely large 7 bedroomed detached house with large bathroom, shower room and downstairs loo. It is about 20 mins drive from coast and 200 Metres from National Forest in Brittany, France. I bought it several years ago but bargain at only £90k.

This is amazing!

Why is it so cheap? It's beautiful and so much space inside and out

PickAChew · 15/12/2020 00:19

@fedupwiththiscrap

Flipping heck - this one is enormous!

Why is it so cheap?!

Some stunning suggestions here, thanks!

Look at the kitchen then imagine the staate of the wiring...

@BethlehemIsInTier1

Up here in Co Durham, you can get a mansion up here with 350K
No you wouldn't

Though I've ways been curious about those CLS terrace - they're so beautiful from the front.www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/81841501#/

But only the cheap parts of the chea areas are cheap.
The wingate house i found is a great house, but not if you want good schools

The others I found at the top of the bracket are bungalows. I didn't carry on. I like the pity me one but it's hardly a mansion.

OK, so I did scroll down further, avoiding the centre of durham. It's Haswell and not a mansion, despite the ornate exterior

What’s your definition of ‘modern’? To some people it’s post 1950, to others it’s post 2000, etc.

Silverjellybean71 · 15/12/2020 09:23

Because it’s in Northern Ireland and a long way from Belfast. Stunning countryside if you can work from home and don’t mind rain lol

crystalize · 15/12/2020 12:15

@timetochangeyourlife wow that house in Dumfries looks amazing! Im loving this thread as I plan my escape from city suburban life in 2 years time.

fedupwiththiscrap · 15/12/2020 12:19

Honestly it seems to rain in the SE most days at the moment Xmas Sad We’ve got some rare blue skies today!

I’m loving looking through all these links, thanks everyone! Grin

Bear in mind that if you moved to Scotland the school system is different so depending on what stage your children are at that might not be a viable option.
I've only been to Dumfries once but let's just say I wasn't in a rush to hang around!

Because it's in Oban which is middle of bloody nowhere!
2tired2bewitty · 15/12/2020 12:49

Can’t get much closer to the coast than this one (no garden though)

emmathedilemma · 15/12/2020 12:51

@justwanttobemum it's not even in Oban, it's several miles out of Oban down a single track road!

justwanttobemum · 15/12/2020 12:52

If you like the idea of Scotland then Aberdeenshire. Lots of costal towns both south and north of Aberdeen itself where you could easily get what you describe. Stonehaven is beautiful but a bit more pricey.
Not true what another poster said about 20% above asking for all of Scotland. Maybe Glasgow and edinburgh yes.
Like someone else mentioned, in Scotland there are Home Buyers Reports (home reports) these are done by a surveyor at sellers cost before marketing property. If you're interested in a property you can ask the estate agent to send you it.
If Aberdeenshire is of interest check out ASPC website (google it)

Newpuppymummy · 15/12/2020 12:53

North east coast. Lincolnshire coast. Some parts of Kent. Lots of Welsh coastline. South west Scotland

chocolatepowder · 15/12/2020 12:57

What about this - Tavistock. Not far from lots of beaches. It's always raining though.

i think you need to think about lifestyle too. You've got small children so whilst a rural area might buy you a lot of property and outdoor space for your money it can mean a lot of driving around to school and activities etc. I have friends who live in lovely houses but their kids leave home stupidly early in the morning, get home late in an evening and they spend most of the weekend in the car going to activities, play dates and birthday parties etc. As teenagers I can't see their kids having anything like the opportunities and experiences that they would have in more suburban areas.....now that might not be a bad thing but they can't do simple things like go to the cinema with friends without a lift to/from the station.
If I was looking at coastal areas I'd go for the areas to the west of Newcastle if you want more suburban or Northumberland if you want more rural. It's got decent transport connections using the A1 and London-Edinburgh train line and Newcastle airport has good routes and connections.

OnlyTeaForMe · 15/12/2020 13:39

Agree with @emmathedilemma - you want your kids to be able to have independence as they get older, and not rely on you for a taxi service.

I grew up in the North East and places like Tynemouth/Whitley Bay were great for that as they are on the Newcastle Metro line which meant easy access into central Newcastle for us as teenagers!

zafferana · 15/12/2020 14:35

I'm surprised by how much you can get for your money in Derbyshire, which is very central and if you have family and friends in the SE it wouldn't be such a huge move as up to Scotland or the NE as the M1 rights through Derbyshire.

I have a friend who lives near Dumfries - it's lovely up there - very rural and pretty, but it really is the middle of nowhere and the point about needing to drive everywhere is very pertinent. With 3DC how much time do you want to spend in your car OP and how remote do you want to be?

madcow88 · 15/12/2020 14:35

I live in a 5 bedroom 2 bathroom properly. We don't eat in the kitchen although it's a nice size it's not big enough for a table to sit 6 but we have an adjoining dining room and I love it. I grew up in poverty sharing bedrooms and eating on the floor and never dreamed I would be in such a lucky position. I had my eldest DD when I was a teenager and I promised her I would do better for her and give her everything I possibly could. However I am not rich so I managed to find this property in Leeds West Yorkshire and moved. Best decision of my life. If you work remotely then come up north xxxx

snowspider · 15/12/2020 14:51

You would have enough budget to reconfigure this. The mansion nearby mentioned in the text holds lots of music and cultural events. Cardigan is arty and the coast rugged and stunning. Welsh area

ilovemydogandMrObama · 15/12/2020 14:57

Just visited a friend of mine in Folkestone.

She bought a house that was in fairly poor condition, and has spent a fortune renovated it. Think she paid around £150.000. On the coast.
