I want a five bed house for 350k - where can I get it?

I’m sick of living in a poky little house with no space for anything. I want to spread out, with a separate playroom for my 3 DC where I can put all their toys so the rest of the house doesn’t look like a total bombsite 24/7. I want a toilet that’s not right next to the bedroom or the kitchen so I don’t have to smell my DH’s disgusting smells or hear him doing a number 2 whilst I’m in bed or (worse) cooking. I want a big garden so I can shove the DC outside in the summer. I want lots of bedrooms so family can actually stay with US and not have to rent a crappy Airbnb or stay at a bed and breakfast down the road. I’d quite like a kitchen we can eat in plus two reception rooms on top so we’ve got lots of space for arts and crafts, music practice and other stuff.

The problem is, I have a budget of 300k and refuse to live in a modern property because I hate them. I also want to live somewhere stunningly beautiful and preferably on the coast. Work isn’t an issue - we can do that from anywhere.

Where can I go?

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/87607927?utm_campaign=property-details&utm_content=buying&utm_medium=sharing&utm_source=copytoclipboard Scarborough! Uninterrupted seaviews and you could rent out the other three rooms.
I remember when I first moved here and was looking to rent, I had the option for the same price of one bed bedsits or 10 bedroom houses for the same price - but little I could afford in between.
Large old seside properties are VERY expensive to maintain, however, OP. The salt and moist sea air wreaks havoc with your woodwork...

soughsigh · 14/12/2020 08:48

Haha, my house fits exactly all your requirements except the coast - I prefer the hills to the sea. And it's a newbuild, but after living in old properties all his life, DH wanted a characterless house that wasn't a money pit.

I am worried about the increase in WFH means that people move away from more populated areas and into the countryside.

Here you go - the annex can be your private haven when you don't have visitors - no husbands or kids allowed!

Shropshire!

The Oban house is a prefab according to the blurb.

Not entirely sure what that means in terms of how well built or insulated.

@fedupwiththiscrap

Flipping heck - this one is enormous!

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/84296273#/

Why is it so cheap?!

Some stunning suggestions here, thanks!

Because it costs £50k per annum to heat. Because it’s been recently painted to hide the damp. Because it has no carpets. Because it’s 50 miles from the nearest shop.

Probably.

How transportable are your jobs?

dottiedodah · 14/12/2020 09:23

I think you would need to make some sort of compromises here TBH. Mid Wales is cheap ,but you are a long way from Civilisation .There is always a compromise I think .We live on the South Coast, and have a 3 bed 2 recep detached house worth upwards of 350k. TBH I think you will struggle really .Sorry!

CoffeePhoenix · 14/12/2020 09:26

Northern Ireland. You'd have 150K to spare

IndecentFeminist · 14/12/2020 09:28

Five bedrooms, detached, Victorian, okay size garden, near the sea: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86615317#/

MindyStClaire · 14/12/2020 09:31

Yup, lots of NI would fit the bill. Lovely place to live.

Marmite27 · 14/12/2020 09:31
@Marmite27 that means a spiral staircase doesn't it?
That makes sense, thank you!

And @drumandthebass too Flowers

I’ve obviously never looked at a house with a spiral staircase before Grin

Isle of Wight
South of the island (near the sea, woods at the end of the garden) www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/100900556#/media?id=media2
East of the island - massive sandy beach 2 mins away, quick commute to mainland www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/82221001#/
Middle of the island - period features, loads of space, never more than 15 mins from the sea www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/98651033#/

*@dottiedodah* You do realise that the UK doesn't just stopped with a line drawn across it through Birmingham.

Ribble Valley.

Lovely area around Clitheroe-pretty villages in Forest of Bowland (an area of outstanding natural beauty) and 45 mins drive from coastal areas.

Your budget will easily buy you a gorgeous stone house-4 bedrooms and a biggish garden in very pretty area

Mmn654123 · 14/12/2020 09:37

Although don’t forget to factor in the increased bills in your planning op!

ForeverBubblegum · 14/12/2020 09:40

Something like this
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-75646386.html

It's in Whitley bay (coast near Newcastle), although a lot of the coastline in the north would probably have something that fits your criteria.

I was just going to post this. I've looked at some of these houses and winced at the costs of maintaining them. Only buy as big as you need would be my advice - don't be tempted into six bedrooms if five will do!
DameCelia · 14/12/2020 09:43

@TwelveLeggedWalk only problems with IoW are terrible schools and it costs a fortune if you ever want to leave here for anything (like shopping or a hospital). Unless you go as a foot passenger the ferry I'd ridiculously expensive.

MissPollyPops · 14/12/2020 09:43

It's modern though.. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/98810897#/
