I want a five bed house for 350k - where can I get it?

I’m sick of living in a poky little house with no space for anything. I want to spread out, with a separate playroom for my 3 DC where I can put all their toys so the rest of the house doesn’t look like a total bombsite 24/7. I want a toilet that’s not right next to the bedroom or the kitchen so I don’t have to smell my DH’s disgusting smells or hear him doing a number 2 whilst I’m in bed or (worse) cooking. I want a big garden so I can shove the DC outside in the summer. I want lots of bedrooms so family can actually stay with US and not have to rent a crappy Airbnb or stay at a bed and breakfast down the road. I’d quite like a kitchen we can eat in plus two reception rooms on top so we’ve got lots of space for arts and crafts, music practice and other stuff.

The problem is, I have a budget of 300k and refuse to live in a modern property because I hate them. I also want to live somewhere stunningly beautiful and preferably on the coast. Work isn’t an issue - we can do that from anywhere.

Where can I go?

Wales is the place to go for!

EmbarrassingMama · 14/12/2020 09:45

Margate or Ramsgate.

@DameCelia
I live on IOW. Our school is brilliant (although we're not in secondary yet).

Do not dismiss new-build. Some are spacious and they are well-insulated so cheaper to run.

Some of them are lovely - but I adore history and character, it’s a really important factor for me.

in scotland you typically pay up to 20% over the guide price

In a popular place, but not in an area where houses aren't selling.

North Devon
My parents have just sold a 7 bedroom period property for £380k

I’m Yorkshire coast and you’d struggle round here to tick all the boxes. You’d definitely get beds/reception rooms but would probably have to compromise on garden size the closer to the coast you get. Often large kitchens that you can eat in here are at the cost of losing a reception room and often 5 beds would mean losing the attic too. You’d probably find what you’re looking for Loftus/Saltburn/Middlesbrough etc but not the nicest areas to live in. Depends whether everything you’ve listed is “must have” of if some things you’d compromise on to get the must haves. Our house was £650k, 30 mins from the coast, 5 big beds, 3 reception rooms, large kitchen and huge garden with a garage and off street parking. It’s not far off average really for our area.

I can't see any radiators (and therefore central heating) in that Oban property.

You can get a lot for your money in Ilfracombe

CYW2018 Sorry , didnt mean life stops at Watford Gap! I just thought a 5 bed home with lots of space, would be difficult to find anywhere in the UK TBH. Obv not very up on house prices .Maybe Im looking in the wrong places but even when I looked in Scotland /E Anglia (Norfolk) couldnt seem to find anywhere that cheap!

dottiedodah · 14/12/2020 10:46

NoParticularPattern Just what I was trying to demonstrate!

It may be better searching for 4 beds if you're doing Rightmove searches too as quite often they will have lots of reception rooms, loft rooms that aren't listed or annexes, as in this one here which has 5 reception rooms but is a 4 bed:

About 40 minutes from the coast and too modern for you, but gives a bit of an idea.

I don't agree that you are looking for a complete impossibility, but I think you would need to be flexible as above, by looking for bedrooms in unconventional places or looking at houses within easy access of the coast but not on a road that leads directly there sort of thing. If your jobs are completely remote working then I don't suppose being in the far reaches of Scotland or on Anglesey or the Isle of Wight would be a big issue.

IndecentFeminist · 14/12/2020 11:04

Schools on the Island aren't all that bad any more. Lots of good primary, and a few decent secondary.

If you need to leave regularly you factor it in, much like you would a train journey. 🤷

Here you go - 5 bedrooms and about 30 minutes from the coast. Beverley is a lovely market town with some great schools.

It’s electric storage heaters.

There’s no gas anywhere round Oban ... wrong kind of rock to out the pipes in or something.

Burnthurst187 · 14/12/2020 13:04

Why don't you just look on RightMove like anybody else would

IndecentFeminist · 14/12/2020 13:06

Rightmove doesn't tell you about an area though does it 🙄
