I want a five bed house for 350k - where can I get it?

I’m sick of living in a poky little house with no space for anything. I want to spread out, with a separate playroom for my 3 DC where I can put all their toys so the rest of the house doesn’t look like a total bombsite 24/7. I want a toilet that’s not right next to the bedroom or the kitchen so I don’t have to smell my DH’s disgusting smells or hear him doing a number 2 whilst I’m in bed or (worse) cooking. I want a big garden so I can shove the DC outside in the summer. I want lots of bedrooms so family can actually stay with US and not have to rent a crappy Airbnb or stay at a bed and breakfast down the road. I’d quite like a kitchen we can eat in plus two reception rooms on top so we’ve got lots of space for arts and crafts, music practice and other stuff.

The problem is, I have a budget of 300k and refuse to live in a modern property because I hate them. I also want to live somewhere stunningly beautiful and preferably on the coast. Work isn’t an issue - we can do that from anywhere.

Where can I go?

I have a big house and big garden and the toys of my 3 year old still make it into most rooms somehow. I think exact location is the most important and yes, you must think ahead to transport for older kids/teens/good schools but also just as important are future job opportunities. Huge divide now between older kids who can stay at home/get work experience easily and those who can’t.

I grew up in a very rural area and loved it never wanted to go to a city from one yer to the next but I had horses and worked on farms etc and it my life. My DC's lived in a very rural location till 11/12ish then we moved a small market town where they could walk to the shops they loved it and thought they were living in a metropolis!
Tranport links are really important. IME rural Scotland has as significantly better bus service than rural England, the microscopic village we've just bought a house in has 8 bused a day. As a child I lived in a similar village in Devon we got two a week and in Kent in a similar size village when the children were small there were none. The town we live in now in England is a very popular tourist destination has two a day and no anywhere useful like a station.

Lovely but under water within ten years surely!

reefedsail · 15/12/2020 17:57

@ImAllOut agreed, you would only be renting that place from Poseidon!

Southsea Road North, Flamborough, East Yorkshire, YO15

East Coast is worth a look.

Leaving aside flooding risk (which seem very real) - the floor plan is weird.

This has got to be the most oversized en suite ever - it’s three times as big as the kitchen.

Only if you’re really serious about being able to work from anywhere. Otherwise your commute will be challenging. 🙂

Anything that is serious flood risk is vitally impossible to get a mortgage on and as someone who has lived in a house that floods it's no joke dont touch it with a barge pole.

reefedsail · 16/12/2020 06:36

@Yellownotblue yes absolutely bizarre layout. But it reminds me of something from a Daphne du Maurier novel!

ghislaine · 16/12/2020 13:14

How about this on Alderney? (Under offer though).

You would have enough budget to reconfigure this. The mansion nearby mentioned in the text holds lots of music and cultural events. Cardigan is arty and the coast rugged and stunning. Welsh area

Thanks @snowspider - I really like this one too! We could use the annexe as an Airbnb to make some extra income.

Scotland

almostautumn · 16/12/2020 13:35

Just visited a friend of mine in Folkestone.

She bought a house that was in fairly poor condition, and has spent a fortune renovated it. Think she paid around £150.000. On the coast.

I’ve looked at Folkestone but all the big old properties seem to be 500k plus nowadays.

Glad you like it, do look up the mansion, I think it has a lot of potential home/location/investment

I'm tempted myself! But just out of my price range
