Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Does anyone else think that today's news plus payday will be contributing to a sudden spike in prepping? I'm so relieved I've spread it out over the last 6-9 months or so!

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 21:53

New case of #coronavirus in #Austria. Total at 6

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 21:54

Good advice from Canada's health minister. She is encouraging Canadians to stockpile food & medication in their homes in case they or their loved ones should fall ill with the virus.

vancouversun.com/pmn/news-pmn/canada-news-pmn/think-about-coronavirus-outbreak-when-planning-for-spring-break-champagne/wcm/eef343e3-e611-496c-8def-a648bd4698c9

Also mentions the importance of staying healthy, staying informed & considering the importance of unnecessary travel. All the things recently mentioned here.
This is what we need our government & media to be saying to us!

@WitchDoc Absolutely agree...

Though I would say the stockpiling message is a bit late now...

I just searched so many places online to find hand gel as it was the one thing I didn't have.

Finally found some on a site:

Astralhygiene.co.uk

Has 62% alcohol which is fine...

@RhubarbTea and @RocketQueen21

I hope you don't mind if I copy/paste your ideas (sleep/essential oils) onto the "Caught COVID?" thread.

I'm sort of gathering any little bits of information/thoughts that I can find into one place. Much appreciated!

mumoftwodc · 28/02/2020 22:04

@PatriciaBateman are you able to link the thread please in case of need.

I have just restocked my cupboards - had a fairly substantial brexit stash but with nothing happening there had started to eat through it. I now have:

6 litres UHT milk
4 litres orange juice
6 litres bottled water (I haven't got much of this because maybe naively I don't think the water will stop running and frankly if it gets to the point we don't have any utilities I'm not sure I want to be around anyway)
About 5-6 tins each of chickpeas, black beans, cannellini beans, baked beans, sweetcorn and various tinned fruit
12 tins tuna
12 tinned tomatoes
7x500g pasta/spaghetti
2kg rice
1kg couscous and about 750g of those flavoured packets of cous cous
2 packs chicken stock
Bottled lemon juice, pureed garlic, pureed ginger, tomato puree
4-5 jars curry paste
2 jars jam
5kg flour and yeast for bread
2kg oats
1kg dried red lentils
4 tins coconut milk
about 8 packets of biscuits and 5 big bars chocolate
16 packs pom bears
Assorted packs breadsticks and crackers
Tinned carrots (boak)
Smash (boak)
Salt
2 litres olive oil
2 bottles soy sauce
Miso soup
2 packets egg noodles

Medicines: 4 packs each ibuprofen, paracetamol, lemsip. 4 bottle each of children's ibuprofen and paracetamol.
Plasters
Antiseptic
Multivitamins

Shower gel, soap and shampoo (4 shower gel, 4 shampoo, 4 bars soap)

3 packets of toothpaste and 3 packs of floss
4kg cat food and 5kg cat litter

I have a couple of basic bits in the freezer but I live in a 1st floor 2 bedroom flat and it's only a little ice box. Literally no room for anything else, we are truly busting at the seams.

I have no idea how long the above will last us to be honest. It's me, DH, and DS aged 4.

What am I missing?

RocketQueen21 · 28/02/2020 22:06

@PatriciaBateman of course not , I don’t mind at all, thank you for asking. Happy that it may help 😉

Tinnednut · 28/02/2020 22:11

Hand cream

Entertainments

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 22:14

@penguinsonaslide

Breakfast options? Things like cereal or cereal bars?
Do you have a bread maker? I would consider adding bread mixes or longer life options like part baked rolls & wraps.
Are you meat eaters? My family would need things liked tinned meat, hotdogs, ham ect that could be incorporated into meals.

PancakeFiend · 28/02/2020 22:14

@Snowdropdelight do you mind me asking what the nebuliser on the other thread was? DH and DD have severe asthma and have also ended up on them before. Would be useful to have in the house I think.

penguinsonaslide · 28/02/2020 22:16

Oh I forgot I have 3 large boxes of cereal too, but was mostly going to do porridge for breakfast. I don't eat breakfast myself generally.

I don't have a breadmaker no but I am pretty proficient chef and quite happy and confident making my own bread - I already do it.

We don't eat any processed meat

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 22:17

@penguinsonaslide
Sorry, i can see you have flour & yeast for bread

penguinsonaslide · 28/02/2020 22:18

Oh tea - I do have tea! We don't drink coffee

Have LOADS of loo roll, forgot that too

Must add washing powder and washing up liquid, thank you

Already use reusable sanpro so don't need that

Entertainments - I mean what do you all have? If I have the internet I'm good. If I don't have the internet I have pens and paper, books, games, toys for DS....wouldn't have thought I need to buy anything else really

PatriciaBateman · 28/02/2020 22:21

@mumoftwodc

Link to the Caught COVID? Thread

Hope you find it helpful Flowers.

SleepWarrior · 28/02/2020 22:22

I don't think I would hunker down and start on my stash just yet. It could be many weeks before it peaks, and then you'd be running out of everything at the worst possible time. Avoid unnecessary gatherings and travel (and always avoid soft play Wink), but I would keep doing regular top up shops (without kids in tow who touch everything) and leave the hoarded food alone. Perhaps that's just me though.

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 22:22

@penguinsonaslide
I would need mayo for my tuna & gravy for my smashWink

nellodee · 28/02/2020 22:23

For board games, my favourites are:

Camel Up
King of Tokyo
Kingdomino
Sushi Go
Poker
Escape the room games

I have Ring Fit Adventure for the Switch, and if anyone has a switch, it is an amazing game for getting a really good fun work out if you are locked in.

echobench · 28/02/2020 22:23

I’ve got a couple of new colouring/sticker books, reading books, and would like a couple of new puzzles (complicated ones!). Basically some new things to relieve the boredom.

nellodee · 28/02/2020 22:29

Diamond Painting is quite relaxing. Its like cross stitch for people who can't be arsed.
