Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

First case that was passed on in the UK. This is getting too real.

MakeLemonade · 28/02/2020 19:31

I thought so!

I just ordered some oxygen saturation monitors for the first aid box - thanks for that tip.

justchecking1 · 28/02/2020 19:32

Why are our government so cloak and dagger? It's so frustrating! Can't we just have some proper information for once?

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 19:36

justchecking imo We have an elite class who can't communicate with average people.

RhubarbTea · 28/02/2020 19:36

Well as someone upthread pointed out recently, their prep isn't something they want to shout about as it would sound so bleak and awful to talk about. Because of how decimated the NHS and other services are due to cuts.

The fact they don't know how the GP got it is concerning, I agree. I think we're going to see an uptick in new cases now, sadly.

LightofMine · 28/02/2020 19:37

I thought I read that earlier somewhere @ofwarren, so it's true then. It is now a community transmission and not just linked to travel. tbf it was only a matter of time, we will start to see a lot more cases here now. I think there will be a big shift in attitudes and actions by Monday, especially after the COBRA meeting Sad.

Not sure if I’m being helpful and something like this may have been shared before? so apologies if I’m repeating but some essential oils are useful when inhaled regularly through cold and flu season using an oil diffuser. I’ve been researching this for a while. Essential oils such as lemon, bergamot, pine and lavender are effective. These oils are especially good in helping with pneumonia which I understand Covid19 can cause. I’ve just ordered a relatively cheap diffuser off amazon for under £20 and plan to get it up and running as soon as it arrives Sunday! Obviously I’m no medical expert so please do your own research but I thought it can’t hurt to try 🤷‍♀️ Please be careful if you have pets as some essential oils can be harmful to them .

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 19:39

I wonder if the GP caught the virus off one of the ones who had been to Iran? We will never know though because we haven't been told where those other 2 cases are from 🤬

bettybluebees · 28/02/2020 19:43

I've just read through all the posts. I've been quietly stocking up. There has been some really useful advice on this thread. So thank you Smile

Valkarie · 28/02/2020 19:44

I have done all the prepping I can for now. If budget allowed I would happily forge on to chickens, solar panels, water bob etc. But for now I am comfortable that we have food, loo roll, toiletries, otc medicine and nappies enough for a few weeks.

I plan to replace things as we use them in date order, so if this all not needed I am prepared for the next snow / no deal brexit / zombie apocalypse. Using up the previous brexit stash was a mistake in hindsight as I had to go out and buy again.

I am in no way prepared for serious long term shortages. Could do water for a few days and use log burner to heat water until the small pile of logs ran out. But I don't want to be wasteful, so not bought things we don't already use apart from a pack of water purification tablets. No masks, gloves, tins of things we don't normally eat etc. So I think I am being sensible, not panick buying like the media want people to think.

RhubarbTea · 28/02/2020 19:44

Good tip about essential oils, RocketQueen21. There were some reduced Tisserand essential oils in TK Maxx recently. I wonder if they still have them...

Sterristripoff · 28/02/2020 19:46

I’m home from my hospital trip and hopefully just in time to have not caught it there. Feels like it will be UK wide in days to weeks. Am I being overly anxious or does anyone feel like that?

Other than having a supply of food/ medication, practising good hand hygiene and avoiding crowded places is there anything else we can do?

sideorderofchips · 28/02/2020 19:47

It took 6 weeks to reach peak in China and that's with stringent quarrentine.

The UK? That long or sooner I thunk

justchecking1 · 28/02/2020 19:48

And when do we start the clock? Now or when Steve caught it?

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 19:50

I agree with you @Sterristripoff
We are going to be increasing every day now

RhubarbTea · 28/02/2020 19:50

I think the singe best thing people can do for their immune system and general health (apart from good hand hygiene) is to get enough sleep. Studies have shown that getting adequate rest helps massively with healing but also to prevent people catching stuff in the first place. So, don't get run down, use a relaxing app like the Calm app to help you fall asleep at night if need be, and try and get 8 hours.
Easier said than done when people are feeling tense as well... But so worth remembering.

BunsyGirl · 28/02/2020 19:50

Did my weekly shop at Aldi today. I wanted to get a couple of hand sanitisers as I only have one left. They had none. I went to another store across town, exactly the same. Just looked on eBay and people are selling them at extortionate prices. Disgraceful.

RocketQueen21 · 28/02/2020 19:51

Thanks @RhubarbTea I’ve been putting them in my amazon basket all week and then not checking out 😂 but I just read a really interesting piece about the uses and effects some essential oils can have in treating and controlling pneumonia and that’s convinced me to give it a try. If anything my house will smell lovely !

Duckyneedsaclean · 28/02/2020 19:51

20th case in UK with "no identifiable link to foreign travel"

BlackeyedSusan · 28/02/2020 19:54

Or a kid/family back from skiing. Average length of incubation is 3 or 5 days. See kid/ family on Monday.... 4 days later.

PancakeFiend · 28/02/2020 20:00

Does anyone have a thermometer they’d recommend that isn’t too expensive? Looking online at the reviews of the better priced ones, they seem to be not very accurate and this is one thing that needs to be absolutely spot on as even a small rise in temp could need attention.
Also, has anyone seen any complete pancake mix that’s gluten free, big tub preferably?
Went to Lidl, home bargains and Superdrug yesterday to get some last min bits and all the shelves were fully stocked. Got hand gel no problem, Calpol etc so that was a big relief. Also put an Asda order (not for the prepping stash but a general shop). Managed to book my usual slot on Sunday and all items I wanted were in stock (let’s see how many substitutions I get before I celebrate).
It seems in my area at least that things are as normal. Friends still going out to theatre, on holidays, eating out etc with no worries. It’s really strange, like parallel worlds.
My mum’s birthday next week and we are supposed to be going to the harvester. Not keen tbh. Definitely going to stay away from the salad bar 🤢 Is anyone else trying to refrain from eating out? I feel like a big drama queen amongst my friends and family but then I come here and am reassured that it isn’t just me.
Not feeling anxious about it though which is strange as I’m generally an anxious person. Over the years I’ve realised that worrying about something doesn’t make it go away and if we are all going to be hit by this I don’t want to spend my last few weeks/months whatever being consumed by anxiety. So trying to chill and be happy. My dh and dd1 are severe asthma sufferers but I’m prepared so there’s not much more I can do. Kind of just going with the flow now.

mumoftwodc · 28/02/2020 20:02

Please can someone explain about potential water shortages. What could happen to the water supply?

SharpieInThe · 28/02/2020 20:04

That's sound advice @RhubarbTea
For me it's going to be yoga, camomile tea and meditation apps.

I'm just rotating now, and if it doesn't kick off before my payday I'm getting wine and chocolate for me and DH.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 20:04

It's looking like the GP surgery is in Hazlemere in Surrey

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 20:07

Sky News understands the British man who died in Japan after being infected with coronavirus while in quarantine on the Diamond Princess cruise ship was in his 70s and did not live in the UK
