Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I saw that too - but where did Leatherhead come from earlier?

Did you see Hannah Fry’s programme where she started a contagion from Haslemere? Sad

Sterristripoff · 28/02/2020 20:07

RhubarbTea you are right. Good sleep is so important and so often overlooked.

We've decided that it's Go Time in the Shades household. No more trips out to shops, soft play, swimming etc etc for a few weeks. Time to see how my prepping skills have done.

Anyone else deciding this is it now?

I just said on the other thread that Haslemere is 15 miles from me...and Buxton is 15 miles from my DM!

We're doooooomed Grin

@mumoftwodc I guess effects on water companies workforce if they got hit by the virus . Water has to be treated obviously (chlorination) before it’s safe and this needs carrying out by trained staff who understand water supply systems etc . You can get water purification tablets online ,Amazon , dirt cheap

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2020 20:15

No, not yet. It's like an extraordinary game of chicken but we're not jumping yet. Sports clubs and school are still on. You couldn't pay me to go to soft play at the best of times though.

MugsLife · 28/02/2020 20:18

I caught flu and used loads of my supplies! But I was very glad to have them. One thing I would say is make sure you have plenty of intensive lip balm.

Going to have to restock now and get back on it. Bought an extra freezer today! My freezer is always rammed, so it will be great to have somewhere to store more bread, milk and home cooked meals.

TreesSandSea · 28/02/2020 20:19

My kids’ football training and match have been cancelled because of the weather so we will be hunkered down watching things develop. Feels like go time to me but DH not sure. Though he is fully on board with the preps - he did another shop today - and included lots of seeds to grow veggies which was a good shout. No garlic though Wink

Plantherd · 28/02/2020 20:20

@pemberlyshades im thinking of cancelling my family membership at the leisure centre for a while. Will save on 100 a month, we take the kids swimming regularly and I use classes/the gym. Just feeling pretty down about it, not much anxiety tonight just this sad/low down feeling about life possibly changing for a while..

sideorderofchips · 28/02/2020 20:21

It's not on our island yet so not jumping yet but I am prepared for when it inevitably does

Wolfcub · 28/02/2020 20:21

Ocado have just sent out a message about usually high numbers of orders and larger than usual orders.

pemberlyshades · 28/02/2020 20:23

We aren't that far from Surrey- plus any excuse not to go to soft play!

Plus I planted heaps of garlic and onions last year- and we have sooo many eggs from the chickens.

Kids will still be in school- and we will go to work but that will be it until the virus starts dropping off.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 20:24

Personally I'm not worried about water supplies.

The utilities companies have very, very good contingency plans in place and many parts of the process are automated.

Keeping utilities going would be a top priority - I really can't see this impacting them at all.

Thank you @rocketqueen21

EliK · 28/02/2020 20:29

We stopprd trips to soft play a few weeks ago. My DS does swimming twice a week, I'm not sure if/when to stop that? We've stopped going at weekends when it's mobbed. I'm avoiding the shopping centre at busy times as well.
Rely on public transport though Sad

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 20:29

If I could have my way it really, really would be @pemberlyshades as it would ease my anxiety about the situation so much if I could just bolt the door shut & watch it all play from the comfort of my own sofa now. We have enough preps to see us through for at least a month but DH still has to go back to work Monday & yr11 DD is currently sitting mocks for GCSEs.
We do however have no plans to leave the house unnecessarily this weekend which buys me a few days of peace of mind.

pemberlyshades · 28/02/2020 20:35

I think it's more about consciously avoiding public places and deciding to stay put apart from non negotiables like school and work. I will work from home as much as possible but DH can't.

It's like I've had a mindset shift and it's actually a relief!

Tinnednut · 28/02/2020 20:37

@mumoftwodc it doubt there is any real danger to the water supply. My only concern would be if there was damage to pipes/ maintenance work that needed done it would be slower to get fixed.

The only reason we have water is due to on going (6 months +) going on in our rural community meaning we have lost both water and electricity a few times recently.
However for most especially if short on space, storage or no car it's not something I would really prep for if I had other needs that needed to be met.

Tinnednut · 28/02/2020 20:38

I meant on going road and pipe works.

Weezy511 · 28/02/2020 20:41

I think we can take heart from China on the water front, they’ve kept their utilities running on a much bigger scale, whilst dealing with (fingers crossed) a much bigger problem than us.

sideorderofchips · 28/02/2020 20:43

Tbf China can build a hospital in a week.

The UK can't even fix a pothole in that time.

Even then though I'm not worried about water

FuckThisWind · 28/02/2020 20:46

Mum is a 'young' 75. And until recently, in fairly good health. She has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer. We have had a phone call every day saying something else. Another test, etc. Meeting with consultant this Thurs.. She's at the stage of telling them to fuck off and leave any surgery and treatment for now. Because let's face it, who the fuck would put themselves in a more vulnerable position than they are already in at that age?

Head fuck? Yep
