Prepping for a pandemic...7

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 19:29

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I'm in Ireland, we don't have any confirmed cases yet but it is still impossible to get alcohol hand sanitizer already

NewYearNewTwatName · 28/02/2020 20:46

I was thinking about Vento as didn't her GP go off sick after they'd seen them?

I Hope she ok it didn't sound good.

TreesSandSea · 28/02/2020 20:46

So will they not update their Twitter now, do you think? It’s still the 2.03 message saying they will update later this afternoon .....

I smell a rat

MissPoldark · 28/02/2020 20:47

Did you see Hannah Fry’s programme where she started a contagion from Haslemere?

Shock that is just bloody weird.

Banana770 · 28/02/2020 20:48

I've been lurking on here for a while. Thanks for all the prepping ideas, we're a lot more sorted now! I've focused on ensuring we've got a reasonable supply of medicines and food that we'll all eat. Pretty confident we could probably eek it out for 3-4 weeks if we had to, although some of those meals would be quite interesting and we'd run out of milk and bread very early on! The one thing I've not really done is stock the fridge, any suggestions of what has longer use by dates on? I was thinking of some halloumi, but not sure what else could last for a reasonable time.

I'm not worried about having no water or electricity particularly more than usual, I have a few bottles of water and a couple of torches and candles, but I don't think that's the most likely scenario.

TreesSandSea · 28/02/2020 20:48

It was fascinating. I watched it last week.
In terms of transmission though .... NOT an encouraging watch.

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 20:49

I think it's more about consciously avoiding public places and deciding to stay put apart from non negotiables

We've been doing exactly that since news of this broke & it's good that companies like Amazon are encouraging their employees to do the same.

If everyone made a conscious decision to avoid making unnecessary travel & trips out then we might have chance of slowing the spread.

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 20:56

@Banana770
Definitely Halloumi, although most cheeses have long use by dates on them.
Bacon? Peperamis? Fresh beetroot? Gammon? Things like frubes can be frozen, taken out the box as a space filler.

sideorderofchips · 28/02/2020 20:57

@newyearsameoldme2020 we have the same here

GeistohneGrenzen · 28/02/2020 20:59

Placemarking and thank you.

pemberlyshades · 28/02/2020 21:01

I've just bought aloe Vera gel and isopropyl alcohol on amazon. I bought 70% alcohol in the end because the 99% stuff seemed v industrial!

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 21:07

I'd just say pemberley that you will be diluting it with the aloe Vera to less than 70%.

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 21:10

Longer dates in fridge on pate, cheeses ( feta has an unfeasibly long date!) packs of soft cheese, filtered milk.

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 21:11

I went out on Monday so I guess lots has changed, but Primark do 75% ethanol hand gel. They had hundreds in my local store.

But in the last week every one dh works with has gone from laughing to prepped. It might have sold out now.

Ibuprofen and paracetamol- ask in your local chemist as i bought a pack of 36 of both last week. The last thing I need as a migraine sufferer is no painkillers.

TankGirl97 · 28/02/2020 21:13

@FuckThisWind Flowers for you. It's a major headfuck. All the best to you and your mum.

I had a tissue and bog roll delivery from Who Gives A Crap today so I'm feeling prepped up to the eyeballs. I could build a loo roll fort if required.

Halloumi and chorizo sales must be spiking this week, they are in all our shopping baskets 😆.

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 21:19

Did you see Hannah Fry’s programme where she started a contagion from Haslemere?

Haslemere health centre has closed today for a deep clean but no reasons given......

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 21:21

On a light note, if I developed symptoms can I get my house deep cleaned? It needs it after half term 😉

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 21:22

Nearly time for a new thread, I'll do it in a minute in case this one fills up before I'm up and about tomorrow...

pemberlyshades · 28/02/2020 21:33

Ok @felicity I've cancelled that and bought the 99% scary looking one! Going to save the empty hand gel bottles as we use them up then decant the homemade stuff in as and when. I've got some essential oils to from planning my labours so I can fragrance them with that- Kirsty alsop way your heart out!

sideorderofchips · 28/02/2020 21:40

To anyone who is buying ims or ethanol please can you be seriously careful.

I work with chemicals for a living a d ethanol needs to be stored correctly away from any heat or flame sources.

sideorderofchips · 28/02/2020 21:43

It should be kept in a fire resistent cupboard above all thinks. It has a very low flash point.

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 21:44

I've just been to the cinema. It was very quiet - only 10 people in a big screen. I think lots are starting to hunker down.

I, meanwhile, went to London recently and now have a dry cough. Trying not to let paranoia set in ...

pemberlyshades · 28/02/2020 21:46

@sideorderofchips don't worry I have a science background- well aware of the risks- will be kept in the bottom shed in a sealed box. Good point though

This is a good point!

Yep handgel impossible to get now. I sent dh out for the some of last week and he came back with two mini ones. Confused

I have some anti bac wipes but not enough to get me through this.
On hoping to get some of dettol laundry detergent tomorrow and dh is scouring all shops for anti bac tomorrow!

Ocado isn't working and I got an email to say book delivery slots now it's very busy.

I've been building up basics thanks to this thread Flowers and tomorrow is family to the shoulder day.

Freezer defrosted (holding us back) for space, cupboards emptied, tidied and a rough... How many meals have we got here stock take to do.

I'm going to buy some meats and flatten them with my new meat tenderiser, buy 🥓 to freeze. The person who suggested taking the meat out of their packets what a revelation!
I'm very hopeful to get loads of chicken in my poxy freezer now.
I've made brocoli soup with bone broth, lemon, tons of garlic, onion and a spoonful of spirlina and turmeric.... I'll freeze that for illness eating.
Again someone mentioned the German rye bread with long dates, so I got that, and yeast, bread flour.

I'm stocking up on butter and cheeses tomorrow.

I got lip salves anyway today but I see someone who had flu mentioned them.
I feel much more prepared now and ready for the storm approaching. The only other thing I'm wondering about is the nebuliser mentioned on another thread. Dd has weak ish chest and ended up on them....
