Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Thanks for setting up

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 21:59

Thanks @wheresmymojo

My freezer is rammed but could really do with defrosting. If I begged, stole and borrowed a bunch of cool boxes and ice packs, how long do you reckon it would take to defrost? Would the food be wrecked?

BridgeToTerabithia · 28/02/2020 22:00
Brew
TreesSandSea · 28/02/2020 22:07

Thanks for the thread.

When do you stop prepping?

We have food, loo roll, entertainment, medicine for a month, but I’m still itching to dash out to the shops, even tonight when they are quiet, to get additional stuff ‘just in case’. I don’t even know what I would get!
We’re not near a hotel zone’ as far as I can see, I’ve always been a general prepper, but I can see the tsunami coming and I feel like I want to get all the things!

Anyone else relate?

One idea I have had is to start some practical prepping tomorrow - harvest and plant some more salad veg, clean out the chickens, plant out some seedlings?

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2020 22:08

My chest freezer has arrived and I have a click and collect to pack it to the top to collect tomorrow morning and then I am almost completely ready, for now.

TreesSandSea · 28/02/2020 22:08

‘Hot zone’, not hotel zone Hmm

EliK · 28/02/2020 22:12

@TreesSandSea I feel exactly the same.

AlohaMolly · 28/02/2020 22:15

One upside to DO and DS going out tomorrow is that I can recheck and do a proper inventory and rough out a meal plan. Everything just feels very real.

tangled2 · 28/02/2020 22:17

If everyone who is following this thread leaves a 'placemarking' post, it will fill up even quicker than the last ones. Could people try use the bookmark option please? Just leaves
more space for the relevant posts and information. (I'm aware this is another pointless post, sorry, just with the increasing rate of news, it's surely better to not spam it more than is needed)

TreesSandSea · 28/02/2020 22:19

Thanks EliK, it’s an odd feeling.

There’s a fear, I suppose, of not really knowing quite what we might need, a concern about being without something really important.

Part of it is, I am certain, trying to retain a feeling of control in a situation which feels as though it might get rather unpleasant for a while.

twins2019 · 28/02/2020 22:19

Ocado have sent a blanket email advising of very high demand and large orders - never seen this before even in the run up to christmas!

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 22:20

I am next to one of today's cases. It's right in my town. I also feel like I'm.not ready. But I know I am. I just want more of ds favourite food ( he has asd).

Unless it's long life food you will definitely eat, try to be assured you have enough

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 22:20

Also same here Trees

I'm done now. I may add the odd bit (and really do mean odd bit) with my normal shopping but now I'm going to focus on other things like:

  • Getting all the laundry done (so lots of slack if I feel too ill to do laundry for a week or two)
  • Practising no handshakes/hugs/touching face
  • Clearing out cupboards and selling anything unwanted on eBay. I am not working at the moment and my job market is dire so I could do with raising cash if poss especially with a recession coming
  • Planning a UK break (can't see any reason why to avoid a weekend away in the UK?)
  • Getting in the routine of taking my extra vitamins
  • Doing some exercise as I'm unfit and that won't help if I'm ill
  • Making a big list of both chores/DIY/household organisation stuff I can do while indoors plus also a list of the million craft projects I have materials in to do
  • Also a list of online free courses to do if I'm stuck indoors

@TreesSandSea I feel the same. I've just ended up writing another list of things I should have in. Much smaller than previous ones though.

DH wants to start growing vegetables and herbs, always meant to get round to doing it and now with the virus spreading it means we will probably actually start it.

NewYearNewTwatName · 28/02/2020 22:21

Thanks mojo

I get it a bit too at the moment.

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 22:22

Petrol. I dont think it's going be affected but a full tank wont hurt incase headless chickens attack this week. I wanted to drive down to see my mum.this weekend but my dh has been in the building being deep cleaned today. I hope my mum still has her three freezers full up.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 22:24

It's a very strange calm before the storm feeling.

Not as dramatic but how I imagine people in the US must feel once they've boarded up their windows and hunkered down awaiting a hurricane that hasn't quite struck land yet...

A bit eerie.

Hoping it all fizzles out and it's not needed but I'm not optimistic about that at the moment.

ifonly4 · 28/02/2020 22:25

It's payday weekend and with so many new cases being reported, I reckon the shops will be busy this weekend.

Tinnednut · 28/02/2020 22:26

@penguinsonaslide What about Hotdogs for DS? We bought jarred one's for DD, something soft to eat if she had a sore throat and quick to make if we are all ill.
Tinned curried chicken plus nann bread on the shelves have decent dates.
Tinned chilli.
Tinned fruit.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 22:27

I imagine there will be research done on the societal and psychological way people reacted to this in the future.

It's so interesting seeing all the different behaviours if a bit frustrating

I think I'm going to avoid all threads on CV except this one and the AIBU one from now as I really don't have the headspace to get into debates with the 'it's just the flu' people. They can deal with things in their way and I shall give them plenty of space to do so.

OP posts:
ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:29

That's what I've been doing wheresmymojo I just end up getting wound up with people being dismissive.

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 22:31

I'm just having to ignore 'it's just the flu' now. Some of the company moments on my FB feed are Trumpian in their stupidity.

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 22:32

Company moments - comments! Must proofread.
