My Waters Went on Monday at 22+4 :(

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of really premature rutured membranes ?

My waters went on monday as a result of an infection i picked up having an emergency stitch put in last week.

Babys fine and the stitch is still holding, i've not gone in to labour but obviously this is a grim situation and we're likely to lose our baby boy.

I'm on some wacking great antibiotics which are making me feel hideous but i have been discharged from hospital, there is nothing mroe they can do there apparently so i am home on bedrest praying babys lungs develop and he stays put for a few more weeks to at least give him a chance.

Does anyone know anyne who has been though this ?

Oh gosh how frightening for you, I'm sorry.

I have no experience but have a vague recollection that waters can 'grow back' if they go early.

Hopefully someone will know more than me, hope you are ok.

They have said that the sack can reseal and waters can accumalate again but i think thats the exception rather then the rule although we can but hope i guess.

I am ok, surprisingly i am coping fairly well, the first thought through my head when the waters went was that my baby was going to die and since then i have been on auto pilot I even have a very matter of fact conversation with my consultant about funerals and post mortems. It all seems horrible surreal.

How awful for you all Certainly far from your experience, but I have had a few small leaks that have resealed, my waters were low but have picked back up so they can and do replenish themselves, am sure you've been through all of this with your med team.

Really hope your little boy stays put for as long as possible.

So, so sorry you are going through this. I really hope you are one of the people for whom the waters re-seal themselves, or that your baby hangs on for a good while yet.

I've PROM'd in two pregnancies (one later & the baby was fine, one much earlier than you & the baby didn't make it). It is absolutely terrifying.

PROM is quite helpful, there are lots of stories of early PROMs with good outcomes.

I assume they've given you all the advice about avoiding infections (no sex, no baths, don't let anyone near your vagina (doctors especially, no VEs etc)). I was adviced to take my temperature frequently & to look out for any changes in discharge (infection), bleeding (cervical changes) & to stay well hydrated (dehydration can cause the uterus to start contracting).

Oh gosh WM - that sounds absolutely terrifying. The PROM website has some fab info on by the looks of it, not to mention some very inspiring stories.

Really hope things work out for you, will be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you and your LO.

Hang on in there for another 5 days, then you will be at the precious 24 week mark. After that, every day is a bonus. You are giving your baby the very best chance by resting, and you are already a great mum by doing that. So sorry you are having to go through this

This is my 2nd prom too, my waters went with my Daughter at 30 weeks, she was born at 32 and is fine.. Thtat felt like a horrible situation at the time but id give my right arm to be going though that again instead of this.

Babys fine this morning, he's obviously not that bothered, laid back like his Dad probably.

Joy they have told me about the infection risk, the dehydration and the other signs but they want to do an high vaginal swab every monday to check for infction, i didnt have that with dd was i know they were worried about introducing any bacteria then so i will question as to why they want to do it now, i might just ask to stay on the anti-b's they seem to think i'll onoy be taking them or 10 days..

Hang in there Worzsel, every day down is a day closer to a healthy baby.

The fact that they've given you natibiotics means they think the baby has a good chance - with my early PROM they wouldn't precribe antibiotics because they didn't think the baby would survive.

I'd have a long discussion with them re the HVS, it may be that the benefits outway the risks but I'd want to talk them about it first.

Am very sorry, not a very nice situation for you to be in. Hoping that lovely wee boy of yours stays put for a bit longer.

Oh Worzsel, you must be very scared, think positive, be calm, lay back and do absolutely nothing. I'm glad you have found help on the PROM website, now you will feel my virtual hug... now!! that was me, I didn't want to squeeze to tight!

worzel i was in hospital with a woman whose waters went at 22 weeks, she got to i think 36 with weekly checks and then they were going to induce her. her sac kept slightly healing and then leaking again the whole time, she was very worried but got there in the end. i used to see her at all my ante-natal checks, it was lovely to see her bump get bigger after such a terrible scare. i wish you all the very best luck with this little baby.

Lulu, no contractions as yet, a fair bit of pain but i think thats from the stitch procedure which was horrific.

WM I'm so sorry, it must be awfully scary. Just wanted to tell you of a friend who had repeated cervical stitches from 14 weeks. Her waters broke at 21 weeks and she was on complete bedrest for several more weeks. It really was the stitch that kept the baby in. Her baby girl hung on in there and was born at 28 weeks. She is now nearly 2 and doing really really well. I wish you and your lo all the best for a great outcome x

my last 2 pregnancies my waters went at 25 wks and 24 wks. I did not go into labour either but my dc were born at 28 and 26 wks due to infection setting in. Although they were both very early early they both are fine now 8 and 6 yrs old. the younger one who was born at 26wks was on oxygen for 14 months at home. even though it sounds scary you just cope with it if you no what I mean. I was kept in hospital from the time my waters went on both occasions. if the is anything you want to ask me fire away. I am out this evening but I will pop back later.
