Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of really premature rutured membranes ?

My waters went on monday as a result of an infection i picked up having an emergency stitch put in last week.

Babys fine and the stitch is still holding, i've not gone in to labour but obviously this is a grim situation and we're likely to lose our baby boy.

I'm on some wacking great antibiotics which are making me feel hideous but i have been discharged from hospital, there is nothing mroe they can do there apparently so i am home on bedrest praying babys lungs develop and he stays put for a few more weeks to at least give him a chance.

Does anyone know anyne who has been though this ?

nothing useful to add to what has already been said but will be thinking of you x

mummy2olivia · 29/11/2008 17:49

Oh worszel, I have everything crossed. am so sorry to hear this. Am praying very hard that baby boy will stay put til you are ready to see him.

Please promise me that at the first sign of anything even slightly odd, you will go straight to hospital. Am a bit that you are at home TBH.

WorzselMummage · 29/11/2008 20:23

I know M2O, i'd have happily stayed in but i dont think they knew where to put me really, i was in for 3 days on the delivery suite as i think they fully expected me to have gone on to labour by then and when they realised that it wasnt going to happen they said i may aswell be at home. I am probably less likely to get an infection here especially as DF has been bleaching/boiling everything i come in to contact with and the hospital food was bloody awfull so i'm definatly at less risk of starving to death here !

Baby still seems fine, my temps fine and i dont have any pain except just after i've taken my fecking ferrous sulphate .

I am also not leaking any fluid. I lost it all on tuesday over the course of the day ( i could see myself deflating ! )and have had nothing since expect a little dribble yesterdat which may well have been discharge. When my waters went with DD i leaked continually for the 10 days before i went in to labour, i went though hundreds of pads but this time i've not even had a pad on except over night just incase and they were dry. Its a very weird situation to be in and i hope and pray its a good sign.

I have to go in to hospital 3x a week for monitoring and scans etc, i expect after 24 weeks ( friday ) when i have had the steroids they will want to be a bit more proactive with my care, i kind of get the feeling that they dont see the point in doing much before 24 weeks and it breaks my heart to think that if my baby comes before friday he will go down in the books as a miscarriage

sounds like your dh is being lovely about it, how sweet. men like to have things to boil, ime.

i hope and pray that things will work out for you and am taking the no further leakage as A Good Sign.

tsom · 29/11/2008 22:50

wm, remember you from knicker checkers thread? So sorry to hear about events for you over the past week. Will be thinking of you and your dh and keeping everything crossed

lecohen · 29/11/2008 23:39

Hi there,

No advice, just well wishes x hugs x

lizziebeth · 29/11/2008 23:48

I'm another one who had a PROM. This is an awful situation for you.

Is there anyway they will give you the steroids before 24 weeks (know they can be very strict on this but is it worth asking?)

Fingers crossed you don't go into labour, I've heard of several women on the PROM site whose waters broke and continued to leak for many weeks but didn't go into labour, allowing them to give birth at a much later gestation.

JodieO · 29/11/2008 23:52

Mine went at 22 weeks with my ds2, he's now nearly 2 years old. I didn't go into labour either, I spend the rest of the pregnancy on bedrest and I had steroids, blood test 1-2 times a week and weekly scans to check fluid levels. Mine was a slow leak so I had antiobiotics and it was ok. It can work out I really hope it does for you too.

My thoughts are with you xxx

WorzselMummage · 30/11/2008 11:08

Its so nice to hear all your stories

Tsom i did briefly pop on to the knicker checkers post at the begining of this pregnancy as i've had 3 mscarriages too but found thinking about miscarriage to much was just making me worry more so i chose to ignore it and just hope for the best .

Lizzie i will ask about the earlier steroids tomorrow but i doubt they will, they told me they were not even going to scan me for a month! I really hope after 24 weeks they start doing more.

Feel find today had a bit of a leak int he night but baby seems fine

hopw you dont mind my leaky stories

lizziebeth · 30/11/2008 11:28

Keep us posted Worzsel. Only a few more days til you get to 24 weeks. Don't mind leaky stories at all! Oh how I remember those pads - felt like everytime I shifted position some fluid came out.

By the way I wanted to tell you that the girl next to us in SCBU gave birth at 23 weeks and 5 days and her baby survived and went home around her due date.

WorzselMummage · 30/11/2008 12:07

Oh lovely thats just what i need to hear thankyou.

I have been doing lots of research and it seems there can be miracles so i am hoping for one

The pictures of 23/24 week prems are heartbreaking though, i hope we can find the strength.

Aitch, My DF is being great he even did the big shop yesterday and managed to get everything, he's cooking and cleaning and running around after me being a nurse and pharmasist while i lay on the sofa watching films and reding harry potter, i love him loys, he's fab. I am very lucky

Oh worzsel- really glad you are sounding more positive

I can remember when you got your BFP and how it gave everyone so much hope- I hope to god that all these positive stories do the same for you as you did for us on the TTC boards

Am checking in regular to see that you are ok and have everything crossed. Make sure you get lots and lots of rest although it doesnt sound like that is gonna be a problem

joyfuleyes · 30/11/2008 14:14

Hi Worzsel, my mum's a midwife at our local unit - I asked her to email me theur protocol on PROMs, I thought it might be helpful to have a kind of second opinion about management, I know how much NHS units vary.

A low vaginal swab should be sent for culture and sensitivity

An ultrasound to assess liquor volume, confirm presentation and estimate fetal weight

Bloods for FBC and CRP

A digital vaginal examination should not be performed (to avoid infection and release of prostaglandins, which may stimulate the process)

there is benefit to both maternal and fetal outcomes with the use of antibiotics in PPROM - oral Erythromycin 250mg qds (4 times a day) for 7 days (Clarithromycin if allergic).

if there is evidence of infection (offensive liquor, pyrexia >37.5 C, maternal/fetal tachycardia, uterine tenderness) intravenous Penicillin and should be used.

If the woman is not contracting and has no signs of infection, she should be admitted for observation for 48-72 hours

If presentation is cephalic, and swabs/MSU show no growth and CTGs are reassuring, she may be discharged and managed as an outpatient.

Non cephalic presentations with PPROM are at increased risk of cord prolapse and are managed as an inpatient.

Low vaginal swabs should be taken weekly together with blood for FBC and CRP.

CTGs perfomed twice weekly.

repeat courses of antibiotics may be prescribed in clinic.

Ultrasound scans perfomed weekly to assess liquor volume for those at risk of developing fetal pulmonary hypoplasia (PROM /= 26 weeks of pregnancy, who are thought likely to deliver before 34 completed weeks of pregnancy, should receive steroid prophylaxis

WorzselMummage · 30/11/2008 14:45

oh bless you joy

Thankyou

BarbarellaNz · 01/12/2008 09:44

Hi WorzselMummage,

A friend of mine's waters broke at 22 weeks (she was pregnant with twins - only one's waters broke, the other's was still intact). She was on antibiotics/steroids for two weeks and gave birth at 24 weeks to both babies. They are now 10 months old and doing really well. Hang in there and think positive thoughts

flossie64 · 01/12/2008 10:00

My friends waters went at 23+1 and she was managed very carefully.
Great outcome her baby boy was born at 34+2 wks ,by CS. they are both fine 9mths down line.
I hope all goes well with you

WorzselMummage · 01/12/2008 11:08

I am loving all the stories they are really helping my frame of mind

I've just got back from day assessment and everythings looking fine, no infection, no pain, no more loss, babys ok ( was kicking me to peices last night ) and i feel like i am starting to re-inflate which can only be good.

4 days till viable + steroids !

Hi there, hope you and your precious little boy hold on tight for a few more weeks.

I have 7 children, one of whom was premature.
My waters went at 27+4 and as it was my 6th baby, I was warned that the birth was imminent, it was such an awful time, we also thought we would lose our little boy, but he held on for a week and so was born at 28 weeks and 4 days - had to be transferred to specialist hospital to give birth to him..to add to the problem of his prematurity, he was lying transverse up til the night before he was born and I was booked for c-section the following day...law and behold, little man had other ideas, and my contractions started at 2 am and he was born - breech (miraculously he had turned within hours of labour! - consultant said he'd never seen that happen before) and he was born just after 3 am (so very quick labour being the 6th baby.
He was naturally very tiny, only weighing 2lbs 14oz and was transparent.....was in specialist intensive care unit for 2 weeks and then at our local hospital special care unit for another 8 weeks.......don't think dh have ever cried so much thinking we were going to lose him, but he's now nearly 3, and is way advanced intelligence-wise and more naughty than the others put together!!

Hang on in there girl, and as people on here have been telling you, do absolutely nothing other than what you must to survive - absolutely nothing more...and also think positive.

I used Louise L. Hay's affirmations acutally, not sure if you're interested, but I used the one for miscarriage just to try and keep baby alive basically...i kept saying it to myself, going over and over it all the time, and I used to write it out on paper hundreds of times each day.......maybe it worked maybe not, who knows, the most important thing is that our ds is alive and well.
If you are interested in learning this affirmation (only couple of lines so not long and difficult to learn) I will type it on here for you. Let me know if you're interested. Keep going, think positive. BIG BIG HUGS xxx

Wheelybug · 01/12/2008 16:51

Worzsel - I think we used to be in the hut together and due around the same time now. So sorry to hear what you are going through - am glad the situation is looking better than on friday and I will hope my hardest he stays put for as long as possible. Will be thinking of you.

Aitch · 01/12/2008 20:39

interesting about the affirmations. i was going through what i thought was my third ectopic and a friend said she had a funny feeling all was well but said that i should make a point of welcoming my little embryo into the family. so i did, and rather marvellously she turned out to be dd1.
