*Early losses

lockdownbabyx · 12/03/2025 13:54

Hi all, hope you don't mind me joining. Currently 3+5 (I think) with baby #3 after 2 MC in a row, one in September and December. In total I've had 8 losses over the years and I've never once been offered progesterone. Should I have been offered this? I haven't called EPU yet to let them know I'm pregnant as I know they will just want me to come in for repeated bloods until far enough along for an ultrasound. I'm wondering now if I should ring them and ask for progesterone or if it's even needed.

Figtree11 · 12/03/2025 14:40

Congratulations @LER2023 great news. I’ve recently switched to rectal use as I was having some spotting. It is causing me some stomach issues though, so can’t win either way!

@curliegirlie not sure on statistics, but I was told to take it straight away from a positive test following 2 losses

@lockdownbabyx are you under any care such as recurrent miscarriage clinic? I’ve had 2 MCs & under a recurrent miscarriage clinic. During the 2nd pregnancy I was given it by the EPU after I had spotting.
And now with the clinic im under I was advised to start progesterone as soon as I got a positive test again & to continue til 16wks. I know before the EPU wouldn’t offer me progesterone until I’d had a scan showing a baby & unless I had spotting I think

Superscientist · 12/03/2025 14:54

@LER2023 I've been doing it vaginally.

@curliegirlie there's some information about progesterone on the Tommy's page
https://www.tommys.org/baby-loss-support/miscarriage-information-and-support/pregnancy-after-miscarriage/taking-progesterone-early-pregnancy
It's not magic cure but can increase chance of a successful pregnancy by 5-15% depending on the number of miscarriages you have.

Superscientist · 12/03/2025 14:57

@lockdownbabyx I phoned my epu, I'm on pregnancy 3 since July. I asked if there's anything I could do to reduce my risk of miscarriage. I didn't know how far along as I was ask hadn't had a period since my last miscarriage so they got me in to measure my HCG (130k!) and in for a scan the next day and found I was already 8 weeks. They then prescribed the progesterone

I spoke to triage at the labour ward about it, was under the miscarriage clinic too.
They all sorted me progesterone without me being scanned. Id definitely try anf push for it! Speak to community midwifes and speak to everyone you can to get some further support!!

Gentle congrats!

Edit: i was 3+6 and managed to fight for 2 days for it, stressed isnt the word, but managed to speak to my consultants secretary, GP, community midwifes, labour ward midwife, EPAU and more before they all agreed that id been throigh enough having 3 miscarriages in 16 months!

Yay for us being 4 weeks today starting progesterone!

Thank you all! I haven't had any spotting/bleeding though, so I didn't think I'd get it. Everywhere I read about it says you need to have had 2/3 MC and bleeding spotting.

Il ring my EPU tomorrow and see what they say x

Peachmelbaa · 12/03/2025 20:44

@LER2023 I inserted it vaginally however I did have two episodes of spotting at 7 weeks and 9 weeks due to it irritating my cervix. Although I do have a cervical ectropion so my cervix bleeds more easily. I’m now 19 weeks and baby is doing great!

@lockdownbabyx I was given progesterone to take until 16 weeks. I had one previous loss however we then suffered with 18 months of infertility following this. I wasn’t allowed to be prescribed progesterone unless I had spotting and they had seen the baby was in the correct place. However at 4+4 I started spotting but it was too early to scan so I had to do repeat hcg blood tests to make sure it was doubling which it was but it was still too low to scan. At 5+2 the spotting got heavier so they scanned me, found the baby and prescribed me the progesterone. They were reluctant to give me a scan so early but I was in such a state as I was so upset, so I think they just gave in. Thank god they did as I’m now 19 weeks and I’m sure the progesterone saved our baby.

Please tell me everythingd going to be ok? This is new for me (even though its my 4th pregnancy now!)

Im currently 4+3 and the fatigue has hit hard.. like harder than it ever has, i look around 16 weeks pregnant because of bloating and im STARVING. I literally cant get enough food.

Its like this pregnancy is so new, all the symptoms are V strange.

Last night however i saw brown discharge... not a lot just spots on a pad and its on the tissue when i wipe.

Is this something thats normal?

Taking progesterone im now on day 4 of taking them twice a day.. vaginally, scared to do them rectally😂

Is the brown discharge normal in this stage? Ive never had it. When ive been bleeding its always been at around 6-8 weeks bright red blood.

@Peachmelbaa well done for fighting for that progesterone. I've just had my second early MC (at 5+5, but wouldn't be surprised if things were going wrong in the preceding week, as my lines had stopped getting darker), and had 3 years of TTC inbetween them. I've got no idea whether it would have helped with this one, but when EPU call me back next week to check that my second line has gone, I might ask whether I should take progesterone next time, if there is one. When they took my bloods on Wednesday (4 days into the bleeding), my HcG was at 60 and progesterone at 0.8 I think she said. But I guess at that stage it's uncertain whether that caused the MC or was resulting from the MC.

I feel so numb. Having a MC is one thing. Spending 40 fucking cycles trying to get pregnant again is another. But for it finally to happen just to end in another MC is beyond cruel.

Im really sorry to hear this. Ive gone through 3 MC's. Theyre definitely not easy and do put you on edge! Hopefully they do put you on progesterone next time! Sending you lots of love! X

I had brown discharge, pink, red and clots with my successful pregnancy, so it can be normal.

I was also taking progesterone and did it rectally. Have heard it can cause discharge vaginally so hopefully that is all that is happening for you x

Pumpkinspice13 · 15/03/2025 13:25

I’m currently around 6 weeks pregnant, I had 2 mid term losses in 2023. I’m currently on progesterone and waiting until 10 weeks to start taking aspirin. Wishing you lots of luck on your journeys!!

Thank you, congratulations to you too! I hope everything goes well for you, wishing you lots of luck!
I have my first scan this week with Tommy's and I’m so nervous. X

Figtree11 · 15/03/2025 17:43

@Pumpkinspice13 congratulations! I’m also with Tommys and had my first scan the other week. They are so lovely.

@LER2023 I had spotting with this pregnancy & a scan after showed all was fine

@curliegirlie i am so extremely sorry. I really hope that you will have a shorter number of cycles before falling pregnant again

Pumpkinspice13 · 15/03/2025 18:59

@Figtree11 Thank you, congratulations to you too! They really are lovely there, I’m glad I’m under their care and will be having the reassurance scans with them.

Superscientist · 20/03/2025 16:49

How's everyone doing? I had my dating scan today and saw a beautiful wiggly baby due date is now 28th September!

I have my appointment at the reoccurring miscarriage clinic next week. I've been sent a text to ask if I still need/want the appointment. I'm not sure what to do, I'd like to keep it just in case but not sure if they would want to see me as I'm now expecting?

Pumpkinspice13 · 20/03/2025 19:58

@Superscientist Congratulations! That’s great news!

Figtree11 · 20/03/2025 20:01

Brill news @Superscientist ! Bet you’re so relieved.
I would presume the clinic probably wouldn’t see you now you’ve had a successful 12wk scan? But that’s a total guess, I think I’d ring and ask

Superscientist · 20/03/2025 22:03

Thanks @Figtree11 and @Pumpkinspice13
It's a phone call rather than a face to face appointment, I don't know if that would make a difference

Pumpkinspice13 · 20/03/2025 22:25

@Superscientist I would keep the appointment and let them know your wonderful news. They may offer support in the future if you want/need it. They may offer to put you in touch with other services during your pregnancy.

Figtree11 · 20/03/2025 22:33

@Superscientist the only way to know is to ask them

LER2023 · 21/03/2025 07:46

After 4 weeks my consultant has finally sent my consultation letter over to my doctors and it states to have progesterone every day up until 16 weeks, im so scared for my scan.
Ive never seen babys heartbeat previously!
My midwife daid she will get me a reassurance scan when i see her in 2 weeks, i'll be 7 weeks when i see her, so im V worried that i'll go and they will say its not looking viable, so i dont know whether to say can we just wait until 12 week scan, im having more symptoms this time (christ its killing me😂) im exhausted constantly, i feel like a beach whale! But my constant hunger is slowing off (finally) my nipples dont hurt which is nice! But the boob ache is a killer!!! Feel like ripping off my tits to feel some kind of relief!! I do keep gipping but dont actually feel sick and ive started with heartburn now ive hit 5 weeks!😭

So the symptoms are definitely different from my last 3 and i feel absolutely fine in myself, im still taking my progesterone and my folic acid that was prescribed, and vitamin D! But in my head im just so scared that im going to go into this scan thinking everything is good and it isnt? If that makes sense.

God pregnancy after loss is so hard🙄
