Out of interest does anyone know of any issues that may arise from having scans too frequently?

I had a scan at triage on the 29th (August) due to a unexplained bleed (baby currently fine - I've now joined the progesterone posse), I had already booked in a private scan on the 7th (Sep) to find out the gender, and I've just had a call from triage offering me another scan on the 14th (Sep) so only a week between

So I'm just wondering if I shouldn't go to the private scan although they might not tell me the gender on the 14th so I'm a bit conflicted as to what to do....

Hagster · 02/09/2022 12:13

@Preseli someone else had this fear in the first thread. General consensus was that there aren't any risks of doing too many scans and you should go for it 😊

RedElleJ · 02/09/2022 12:14

Hey @Preseli

i wouldn’t worry about the number of scan - some women get more due to being high risk…sometimes weekly!

All sonographers I have spoken to checked in on their baby every week when they were expecting. So nothing to worry about.

I’ve had loads and baby seems to be doing okay at the moment - I’ve had one at 6, 7, 8, 10, two and 12, one at 13 and 14.

Ive had private and extra scans with the NHS due to bleeding and I can honestly say it helps me cope. But, it is up to you, if you feel like it’s too many and/or you don’t need them then you can always cancel your private one x

STom2 · 02/09/2022 13:57

@Preseli I checked this and read that they use sound waves to scan so the scans themselves don't cause harm to mum or baby. I think official guidance to sonographers is to not scan more than once a week but not entirely sure why this is. I know usually in early stages they book scans 2 weeks apart, but this is more due to being more likely to see a difference between the scans rather than safety reasons.

Preseli · 02/09/2022 22:07

@Hagster @RedElleJ @STom2 Thank you so much for the help, I think I will go ahead with all of them as there will be a minimum of 7 days between 😊 I can't deny that it will be a nice thing to be able to check they are still there!

I know I have extra scans already in the pipeline for after 20 weeks also due to being high risk for Reduced Foetal Growth so I'll have had scans at 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 20, 22 & 24 and probably more after that so it just seems like my scans are getting a bit out of hand 😅

RedElleJ · 03/09/2022 12:28

Oh ladies, I have myself in a right tizz this morning.

I taught an exercise class today and didn't really think twice about the exercises until I started. However, I did two exercises that felt strange today - glute bridges (laying on back and pushing hips up) and cobra pose (lying on tummy and pushing upper body up with arms).

I basically completely forgot how far along I was and as I started coaching the moves I realised I probably shouldn't be doing them. I slowed down and rested where I could but have gotten myself really worried I have hurt little squish in there. My google search has revealed nothing helpful or reassuring so I was wondering if anyone has done anything like this before or has any advice. I am 15+2 today.

I told the class that the next time we do the session I will only be demonstrating at the beginning and vocally coaching throughout from now on - however, I am a bit worried I could have done some damage today.

I wasn't in any pain or discomfort really, they both just felt very strange and different than normal.

Hope everyone is having a good start to the weekend x

doingitalllagain · 03/09/2022 13:47

@RedElleJ I'm sure it's fine to maintain any exercise you did pre-pregnancy during? Don't panic!

STom2 · 03/09/2022 15:32

At this stage I'm sure these poses will be fine. I specifically asked my MW about lying on my back and when to stop. She said after 20 weeks to not do it for more than short periods. Basically once your belly gets bigger, lying on your back or front would cause you a fair bit of discomfort and can have a knock on on circulation (so you'd feel dizzy if you did this for an extended period). With yoga poses, baby is still quite small (about the size of a pear at 15 weeks. So they're not likely to be squished. I still have a toddler I have to get to refrain from bouncing up and down on my tummy! When I was pregnant with DS I did a bit of yoga in 3rd trimester and there's a few of the poses you can just adapt to "make room for baby". But I was doing it up to 36 weeks to baby and bump was very sizeable then!

RedElleJ · 04/09/2022 07:11

Thanks guys - I did a bit more reading and it seems that, as you said, lying on your back is fine. The cobra pose is pretty much a no no as it can cause/increase diastasis recti. It can also cause issues with the placenta apparently but I would be experiencing cramping and bleeding if I had done any damage. That is what I am telling myself anyway haha!

Have my 16 weeks appointment next week and a scan the week after that so hopefully I can keep my cool til then.

doingitalllagain · 04/09/2022 09:54

17 weeks today. 23 days until my 12 week scan and I'm determined to not spend out on another private scan in that time. I really wish I could feel him more! I had an anterior placenta with both my last pregnancies, and asked at 12 weeks with this one and they said posterior so I was very excited to feel movements sooner. At my scan last week they've said it's anterior again, I asked how as I was told otherwise and they said you should never tell someone that early really as it can move like mine obviously has. Gah!! I hope it's still different this time. I was sure I felt him a few times but now I know about the placenta I wonder if I was mistaken...

How's everyone getting on? Anyone feeling much in term of movements?

Rubes1234 · 04/09/2022 11:09

Hey all. Sorry I’ve been MIA again.

Im just really struggling to be honest. Happy to see everyone is getting on well and some genders!!

currently 16+3 weeks. I’ve been constantly brown spotting everytime I wipe since the bleed at 14 weeks. Everytime I mention it to a midwife they just say it’s normal. It’s driving me crazy.

I was scanned on weds by the consultant because I had said I was so worried and they’ve said everything is fine with baby and we heard the heartbeat.

Woke up yesterday morning to more brown heavier spotting with little bits of red. Then no more at all. Then this morning back to brown discharge with a little bit of pinky fluid. It’s driving me up the wall!! Anytime I call they say unless touching a pad (which it’s not) or heavier red to go in. Just feeling really unsettled and unsure what to do. Has anyone experienced bleeding or brown staining like this through pregnancy before?

STom2 · 04/09/2022 11:11

@doingitalllagain I'm 16+3 and not feeling a lot at all. Like Monday I definitely felt 3 little kicks low down while lying in bed. But other than that barely anything. When I do feel something (and it might only happen a couple times a day), it is just like a flutter or bubble popping. The early kind of feelings you'd expect. My MW did tell me this week (after I mentioned the kicks), to not expect any sort of pattern or frequency for another couple of weeks still. That they're so small and only need to turn toward your back for you to not feel anything at all again. And when she checked the heartbeat she commented on how active my LO was in there and sure I couldn't feel a thing. So I'm just holding out for the more frequent pronounced movements to come in next few weeks.

WonderWoop · 04/09/2022 13:28

@Rubes1234 I have the same, sadly. I have had four heavy red bleeds and then after those brown spotting. Had a scan on Monday and everything was fine. I am feeling pretty confident everything will be okay and it's just 'one of those things' as there is no identifiable reason for it. But it does throw me each time it happened.

I bled through the first trimester of my pregnancy with DD but it's going on longer this time, I'm 15+6.

MooBugz · 04/09/2022 13:47

@WonderWoop @Rubes1234 sorry you guys are having the bleeding issues but you are both doing great and the scans and appointments are going well so it is an inspiration to others that will look to posts like yours to know things like that happen and baby is ok ❤️ it's crap the worry never goes for you but I hope when baby starts kicking you all day long that'll reassure you 🥰

@STom2 im looking forward to the proper kicks too, there was a few times this week I thought I could feel a slight something but wasn't 💯

Also had a sudden rush of sadness and tears last night realising I would have been sue to give birth in the next few weeks but also know that everything happens for a reason. Strange how it catches you when you don't expect it X

Hey ladies just thought I would pop in and see how you are all getting along and it's so nice to see you're all blooming 😊.
Some of u may remember me or not.

Anyway I've finally stopped bleeding after my miscarriage which needed medical and surgical management and I'm feeling OK.

Going to try again after I have a period xx

STom2 · 04/09/2022 17:34

@furbabymum15 Glad to hear from you! How are you feeling now the bleeding has stopped? I had to have surgical management after my first miscarriage (after waiting for things to happen naturally). When I next got pregnant it was with my DS who is now nearly 2. I know you'll be doing whatever you need to do to help conceive again. For me, all I did different the next time around (and I can't obviously say for sure if it's what made a difference), was taking conception vitamins beforehand and giving up caffeine. Best of luck when you do start trying again. I really do hope this will be your time. xxx

Skylark1990 · 05/09/2022 09:54

Hey all, glad to see everyone is doing well but I'm sorry about the continued bleeding @Rubes1234 , must be so frustrating and stressful 😥 at least baby seems totally fine so as they say "just one of those things" 🙄 not helpful having no explanation though!

@RedElleJ sounds like you are reassured re yoga poses, so that's good! Won't have done any harm as a one off especially at this stage! It's more that we cpd harm ourselves due to the relaxin than baby. I was told during DD pregnancy to avoid back bends, twists and poses like cobra or up dog that put pressure on the tummy especially once a bump starts coming along due to things like diastasis recti as you say. And fr 16 weeks advised not to lie on our backs. I think I did Pilates till 16 weeks or so with DD and totally fine. I've been too sick to do any exercise recently but I'm so stiff so hoping to prioritize some soon.

I'm 9 weeks today going off my scan and I've been feeling so rough the last few days. It's worse in the afternoons and evenings, I'm just so sick and exhausted - I really really hope this passes soon 😥🤢 it's getting me down! Even though I know it's most likely a good sign. Blergh just a winge really. If anything helped any of you with the nausea that hasn't been mentioned before please do mention! X

Lmcc88 · 05/09/2022 11:03

@Rubes1234 @WonderWoop so sorry about your continued bleeding! It must be so hard! But I am glad all ok with babies regardless and hoping you start to feel lots of kicks soon! As @MooBugz said it’ll be really reassuring for other people to read your posts and see that having bleeding doesn’t always mean the worst possible outcome!

@Furbabymum15 so lovely to see you pop in! I hope you’re feeling a bit better now that the bleeding has stopped and wishing you all the luck for trying again!

I think I’ve been feeling little flutters/pops but as this is my first I’m not sure what they are supposed to feel like! I’m excited for proper kicks so DH can feel!

@Skylark1990 I was the same fine in morning but struggling around dinner time or in the evenings. I get really warm when I’m nauseous or sick so I ordered a cooling Ice headband from Amazon and ice lollies/ice poles really helped me

STom2 · 05/09/2022 11:18

@Skylark1990 My nausea was very similar and also got me feeling very down. It seemed never ending. I'm 16 weeks now and honestly it's only the last couple of weeks that I've felt more human and like I'm getting some energy back.

Ice lollies worked very well for me. And hard boiled sweets. Rhubarb and custard ones were great. I popped one in my mouth any time I felt the nausea coming on and did really help. I've heard lollipops can also be really good. Same thing really.

madeinthe80z · 05/09/2022 11:34

@Skylark1990 I feel you with the nausea. I'm 17 weeks today and it's still not shifted, although majorly improved. I found weeks 8-11 the absolute worst and the doctor said as much when I was considering medication.

The best thing I've found is peppermint smints. Pop one in when the nausea hits and it provides some slight relief. Also getting as much sleep as possible. I think thats why mine is hanging around, it's impossible with a 3 year old to get decent sleep and relax!

STom2 · 05/09/2022 13:11

@madeinthe80z Totally with you in the belief my nausea was worse/lasted longer this time due to having a toddler! Between night waking and early mornings it was so hard getting decent sleep. Today is one of the first days I've not had to nap when he has. At nearly 17 weeks.

Rubes1234 · 05/09/2022 15:26

Hi everyone!

so lovely to hear from you @Furbabymum15! Hope you are doing well. I know I think about you regularly and wonder how you are getting on, so really happy you dropped on by!

@Skylark1990 sorry to hear the sickness is getting you down. I can really appreciate where you are coming from. The only thing I could stomach was orange cordial at one point and ice. I did get some ginger cubes from the supermarket and I tried the sickness mist from my expert. I also tried to eat something religiously every two hours if it was a cracker or a boiled sweet otherwise I would be hurling. It peaked for me about 9-12 weeks then started to calm down. I’ve had a couple of mornings since where I’ve woken up and been sick but it’s more when I’ve hardly slept.

Im just back from the midwife at the hospital. I went a bit loopy on the phone earlier and ended up crying just out of sheer panic and anxiety. Woke up to more red blood. They brought me in anyway and had a scan and a cervix check. Turns out I have cervical erosion (they think could be from op etc last year) It’s settled me a bit because now at least I know what it is. Baby is fine and well and was jumping about. Found I have anterior placenta too so that will also keep my mind ok for when I don’t feel movements early on. Cervix was a really good length- Long Infact 😂🙈 Dr advised pelvic rest and taking it easy. Basically said I’m going to bleed if I have red again just ring and they will reassure me or bring me in. So I somewhat feel more reassured. Actually seen little beans heart beating today too which is good. As I’ve heard it but not seen it. It sounds so silly but I almost feel like it’s a lie unless I see it myself.

Feel like I can breathe a bit better now this afternoon. Hopefully all you ladies get a bit of a relax and reassurance soon. How long will this last for me. I’ll say teatime 😂🙄

Gamergirl84 · 05/09/2022 16:26

@Rubes1234 sounds really stressful but at least you have some explanations and the offer of reassurance if you need.

@STom2 I'm still napping when my toddler is 😆

Had a positive midwife appointment today and heard babies heartbeat.... hubster and I were all kind of nervous last night. Can never quite shake that feeling something will go wrong.

No appointments until the end of the month for the 20 week scan and my first consultant meeting.

Anyone thinking about birth plans yet?

Skylark1990 · 05/09/2022 16:55

Thank you all for the suggestions. Yes I also get very hot when I'm nauseous @Lmcc88 ! And sorry to hear it's getting you down still @madeinthe80z surely it will end soon for you! @STom2 it's so depressing isn't it, just have to hang in there and know it'll pass at some point. I honestly don't know if I could go through this again so I'm kinda glad now that DH only wants two kids 😅 just really hope this little bean is meant to be, for all the reasons! Think I'll have to bust out more ice lollies and mints. I do find they help too.

@Rubes1234 really glad you have found a reason for the bleeding! That must be reassuring. Stressful though going through all that! Did you have the letz procedure in the past?

Just spewed up my lunch but have now had a raisin bagel and some strawbs and feel ok. I'm sure it'll only last a little while but hopefully tonight isn't too bad

STom2 · 05/09/2022 17:12

@Skylark1990 Fruit was also a winner for me now I think of it! But had to be fruit that was juicy. So I ate a lot of red grapes and easy peelers!
