Pregnant after recurrent miscarriage

Hello

looking for some support from women in the same boat, while I await the first scan!

I’ve had 2 missed miscarriages in the last 18 months 9 weeks and 6 weeks and found out I was pregnant again last week before starting the drugs the clinic had prescribed.

im now 5+3 I’m on hydroxychloroquine, progesterone and prednisone. I’ve had brown spotting but that has eased but have had no pregnancy symptoms apart from bloating! I’m not very tired or nauseous and I’m really worried it’s another empty sac or something.

I have early scan booked on 13th may but it’s so torturous.

anyone in a similar boat?
x

@LostFox82 ….. so sorry to hear about your losses, it’s absolutely heartbreaking. I’ve also had a missed miscarriage and a miscarriage in the last 18 months and am currently 8 weeks pregnant.
I have hardly any symptoms at all so I was shocked when I had a scan this week at EPU and there was a baby with a heartbeat measuring on track for my dates, I had convinced myself it was going to be bad news. It’s still very early days for me and I still struggle to see there may be a positive outcome but fingers crossed.
i will keep everything crossed for you for your first scan, it’s so hard not to worry and constantly fear the worst after being through so much but just try and take it a day at a time! X

marplemead · 29/04/2022 08:10

I'm sorry for your losses and congratulations. I was in a similar position to you lastyear, after 2 MCs at 6 and 9 weeks. So I wanted to wish you all the best.

Progesterone up to 12 weeks and then aspirin from 12 weeks until birth worked for me. Also, lots of NHS scans (at 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 32, 34, 38) really helped with the anxiety.

LostFox82 · 29/04/2022 09:01

@Willow11981 congratulations on your scan, that must have been nerve wracking! It’s such a torment isn’t it. Do you have any symptoms at all? I’m just about to go and buy another pregnancy test as I just need to find anything to reassure me!

@marplemead thanks for your reply. I can’t get nhs to agree to scan me before 7 weeks, which is so far away! I’m so pleased the drugs helped you, that’s good to hear

@LostFox82 …… my boobs were a tiny bit sore around 5/6 weeks ( only a little bit though) but to be honest the amount of time I spent prodding and poking them see if they were sore was probably the reason! 😂
And then the only other thing I would say I have at the mo is a weird feeling a bit like being hungry But not exactly like that.
I have no Nausea and not any more tired than normal!
I didn’t really have many symptoms with the two loses either but I would say maybe more so than this time which is strange!

LostFox82 · 29/04/2022 14:40

@Willow11981 i know what you mean 😂 I keep getting the tiniest twinge in the boob area and hoping it’s a good sign! Other than that I’m very bloated which looks like I’m 3 months pregnant and I’d making it hard to hide from work. I think that might be the progesterone suppositories causing that.

my pregnancy test today came up straight away so hoping that’s a good sign hcg levels are good!

Have you told anyone? I had my 40th birthday party at home last Saturday and ended up telling a few close friends as was so obvious I wasn’t drinking! We weren’t actually actively trying this month because of the party, but that’s always the way!

what stage were your other miscarriages?

OP posts:
Willow11981 · 29/04/2022 15:03

@LostFox82 …..oh that does sound like a good sign it came up straight away.
I didn’t let myself do any more than 1 test this time and not a digital as last time I obsessed over the test staying on 2-3 weeks so I didn’t wanna torture myself again

i had a MMC last March, went for a private scan when I should have been 8 weeks and baby had a heartbeat but was measuring 6.5 weeks, I went back 2 weeks later .and there hadn’t been much growth and no heartbeat so had to have d and c. Then had a MC at about 7 weeks last June.

Ah that must have been hard trying to disguise not drinking at your own party 😂😂…… happy birthday!!! Welcome to the 40 club!
ive only told my two best friends so far plus my parents, I’ll def wait to tell anyone else. If I make it to 10 weeks I think I’ll go for the harmony test.because of my age! X

LostFox82 · 30/04/2022 02:15

@Willow11981 I’m sorry to hear about your losses, it’s so heartbreaking. I had a D&c with my first miscarriage too, I had a scan after spotting at 11 weeks and showed baby had stopped growing at 9weeks. I’ve managed to get referral to recurrent miscarriage unit after 2 because that first one was fairly late on and my age. they found my body is making very active natural killer cells which are good cells but can cause miscarriage so I’m now on all these drugs to suppress my immune system. I just hope they work, I should have been taking them before I got preg again but didn’t get a chance!

thanks for the tip off re harmony, I’m just looking into that now, will you see what nhs scan/bloods say first? Looks like I can pay for harmony via nhs potentially which is handy

I didn’t want to be 40 for this baby! But I’m obviously thrilled anyway, I did the test the morning of my birthday so it was an amazing birthday surprise!! Good to know someone else in the club 😉 do you have any other kids? I have 2 boys which I had no trouble with, but they’re 5+7 now so I’m defo putting these issues down to age!

OP posts:
Willow11981 · 30/04/2022 08:57

Oh that’s great they referred you and that they actually managed to find a possible reason for the loses, here’s keeping everything crossed for you that the meds do the trick and this one sticks. I tried to get my GP to prescribe progesterone for me this time but they wouldn’t as I hadn’t had 3 loses so I ended up getting a prescription from a private doc and I didn’t start that until 6 weeks!

I think I’m going to just pay for the harmony at 10 weeks, as I would like to have another scan before my 12 week one anyways and I would like to know sooner rather than later if anything is wrong. That’s great though that it looks like you could get one through the NHS!

ah that’s lovely you have 2 boys, it’s so strange this time it’s been such a hard journey for you,. I don’t have any children, I’ve left it so late 😂.

ah what a lovely bday present you got then, a fantastic bday surprise:!

Hi ladies
hope you don’t mind me jumping in your conversation. Sorry your in this situation also, it’s heartbreaking and so draining. I’m unfortunately in the same club - 1 MC at 4 weeks and two missed miscarriages 7 weeks and 8 weeks. We are currently 7 weeks pregnant, I was surprisingly rather calm when we found out, I think it was the happiness of knowing we fell pregnant after first month of trying, and I honestly feel I’ve been through so much already it can’t get worse. But now I’m at the stage I lost the others I’m overthinking everything. I also can’t imagine any good news at my scan (which I haven’t even booked yet even though I’m entitled to have had from 6 weeks as I’m in recurrent clinic) I don’t see the point of having a scan yet as I saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks with the second which then stopped a few days later. I’ve literally planned how I’ll handle the bad news etc - Anyway sorry to ramble. I just feel confused but I’m aware no one can give us the answers. Good luck to you xxx

Every pregnancy is different, many many women get no symptoms at all so don't assume this is a bad thing. Some women get symptoms that vanish and that is different but can also mean nothing bad.
I'm in the same boat as you, 6 years trying to conceive, many losses along the way and currently 6 weeks 4 days. We were referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic but last month they told us that they're only now seeing people referred in 2019 so god knows when we'll get seen. This meant I had to take action by myself. I did endless research and decided that I'd start taking the things that are given to women when they can't find a cause for the miscarriages, that is, things that won't hurt but COULD help. I put myself on 150mg of aspirin daily and as soon as I found out I was pregnant I went to my GP armed with information from Tommy's about progesterone pessaries. The GP prescribed 400mg twice daily. I also take a significantly increased dose of folic acid along with a pregnancy multivitamin. Obviously check with your doctor before you try anything as everyone is different but for me, with no help coming from anyone, I felt I had nothing to lose.
I also had brown tinged discharge which went away within a day, then a couple of days ago more brown 'bits' (sorry TMI!) which have also gone away now. The worry is absolutely unreal isn't it?! I'd give anything to fall asleep and not wake up until week 12, although I think if I'm honest, I won't stop worrying until the baby is in my arms!
Whenever I had brown discharge or anything that I considered abnormal I put myself on bedrest, can't guarantee that it helped but both times the brown discharge stopped.
Distraction is key for me, keeping my mind on anything that isn't pregnancy-related, until I have a weak moment and end up on here reading all the more worrying or 'negative' posts 🙄
I have a reassurance scan on May 5th and it can't come quick enough!
Really hope it all goes well for you xxx

Willow11981 · 01/05/2022 12:07

Hey @Emily090 @dilydaly …….. so sorry you both find yourself in this situation too, but congratulations on both your BFP’s.

Its so so hard isn’t it as you can’t feel any excitement like you should in these early days as it’s just overtaken with the thoughts ‘well why will this one be any different to the last’.

@Emily090 …… I know what you mean about putting things off, I’ve finally registered the pregnancy online ( I’m about 8 + 4) and the midwife called and booked me in for my booking in app next Friday. The reassurance I felt when I had early scan at epu last Tuesday only lasted a few days and now I’m back to thinking the worst and imagining it’s all gone wrong so I’m wondering if I should get another scan before so I’m not wasting her time.

@dilydaly …… I can’t believe how long the backlog is to see the recurrent miscarriage clinic that’s crazy! …… but I’ve done the same and put myself on 150mg aspirin and I managed to get progesterone through a private Doctor and my GP said no……… just got to hope they help in some way!!!

oh I really really hope this is it for all of us 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻:

xx

Emily090 · 01/05/2022 12:13

congratulations on your pregnancy. You are so right about symptoms - but it is an instant sad moment when something feels different and I just think the worse. Thankfully I’m feeling quite pregnant today so today is a good day. I’ve read quite a few post of others having brown discharge and are also on progesterone so possibly linked. I was lucky to see the recurrent miscarriage clinic quite quickly but nothing showed up and I had to push them to agree to me having 75mg of aspirin, it didn’t seem like the gynaecologist really had any knowledge of why I wanted to take it. I wonder if I should increase to 150mg - maybe I’ll ask the doctor. Maybe it won’t make a difference now. Anyway. Best of luck with everything, it brings comfort knowing I’m not alone but equally wouldn’t want anyone to go through this. X

Emily090 · 01/05/2022 12:43

It’s brilliant your scan went well! Well done in even making it into the clinic, the drive there alone petrifies me, like I actually don’t think I’ll be able to have a scan, the thought of hearing those words makes me so scared - like you said, my constant thoughts are ‘why would this be different’
im really trying to be positive and not sit googling every twinge like I have done before.

has anything happened to make you feel somethings gone wrong since your last scan or is it simply the past not letting you feel that it’s okay?

also, any advice on me upping my aspirin? Would it do any harm to double up? Sorry I know you aren’t doctors just any tips.

love to you all xx

Willow11981 · 01/05/2022 13:10

I think it’s just the fact I don’t feel pregnant at all. I’ve haven’t really had much in the way of symptoms, maybe feeling a tiny bit ‘off’ every now and then but hardly anything. But the last couple days I’ve felt fine so it’s just that really. Don’t get me wrong I’d rather not be feeling sick or throwing up all the time but at least it would be somewhat reassuring maybe! ……. I think I’m just always going to fear the worse, I was absolutely convinced when I went for my scan that it wouldn’t be good news , so much so I’d provisionally booked the morning off a week later as I assumed I’d have to go back to confirm it being over. Was absolutely shocked when it was measuring in line with my dates!

im pretty sure the guidelines have changed and the 75mg dose they used to prescribe has been upped to 150mg so I would say there would be nothing wrong with taking more. I think it’s still a very low dose anyway and won’t do any harm…….. ( though obvs I’m no doctor 😂).

LostFox82 · 01/05/2022 13:30

Hello @Emily090 @dilydaly Thanks for joining, I really hope we all get happy outcomes with these pregnancies after so much pain.

Im on 75mg aspirin a day (basically quarter a tablet) prescribed by recurrent miscarriage unit. As well as the progesterone (I use is as a suppository as I think when I used it vaginally I think that’s what causes brown discharge - rectally is surprisingly easy and no mess!)

I hate the fact I’m wishing days away, and I’m also dreading every day at work trying to hid my already obvious bloated tummy!

let’s stay in touch ladies let’s us know progress/ worries xx

OP posts:
Emily090 · 01/05/2022 16:31

I feel the same, I keep counting my weeks on the Flo app as if it will say 12 weeks 😅- I’ve yet to put in that I’m pregnant as I can’t stand the idea of having to change it to ‘not pregnant anymore’ if things don’t work out! Urgh!

Have you booked a scan yet?
i have a call with the gynaecologist at 9 weeks / I’m not sure why tbh but I called when I found out and the call back was for 5 weeks time! It’s a bit silly really as presumably she’ll just tell me to go for a scan. I honestly feel alone within the doctors / clinic world sometimes - last pregnancy I called the doctors and she told me ‘stay at home as much as you can to avoid causing another miscarriage’ - crazy! I feel unless you really understand a miscarriage or have been through one people simply have no idea.

yes, let’s keep in touch. Praying for us all xx

LostFox82 · 02/05/2022 21:28

@Emily090 i know what you mean about not updating the app this time! The last time is miscarried ever day I was reading all sorts of sites getting updates on how baby was doing, what was developing etc and how I should be feeling, only to have the scan to find out it had n’t even developed and was just an empty sac 😢 so I do t even want to go there this time, I’m just pretending it’s not real until I have that scan.
I gave mine booked on Friday 13th may! I’m trying not to be superstitious, I’ve read up on it and apparently it can be lucky too ☘️I should be 7+3 then, so we will see...

I can feel a weight in my lower tummy today, and still bloated but still not extra tired or nauseous at all still….

Hey,
I'm in the same boat. MMC in Aug last year, stopped growing at 8.5 took medical management at 11 weeks. Then another in December, stopped at 6 weeks took medical management about 10 weeks.
Haven't had any tests as obviously I've not had 3.
I'm positive the cause is my autoimmune diseases, I have PSA, psoriasis and a autoimmune kidney disease. I'm highly suspicious I have APS.
Anyway pregnant again, will be 8 weeks on Wednesday, scan last Thurs had heartbeat.
I'm self treating with:
Aspirin 150mg
Omega 3 4grams per day
Vit d 8000 iu per day
Prednisolone 10mg per day
Methylfolate 3grams per day
A miltivit with folic acid 400mcg and vit c
Was talking pregnacare but stopped as I noticed it has vit k in it which promotes clotting.

Not using progesterone, don't have any sx of low progesterone ever. If I got any spotting I would ask epu for it but that never happens to me.
I started all meds months before my positive test except prednisolone which I started at the first hint of positive test. Was like 8 dpo.
Fingers crossed for us this time.

Needsomeadvice33 · 03/05/2022 00:06

Meant to add, all I took in my last 2 pregnancies was a pregnacare vitamin so this is all different.
For the last 2 I was incredibly sick, like debilitated. This time I feel good, starting to get mild nausea but nothing compared to the last ones. But I've been feeling better generally which I put down to the high dose omega 3 I've been taking since January. Also the steroid I think is making me feel well. So far, this pregnancy is completely different from my 2 MMC's.

Willow11981 · 03/05/2022 07:19

@Needsomeadvice33 …….. sorry to hear about your previous loses but congrats on your pregnancy! You are exactly a week behind me as I should be 9 weeks tomorrow 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻.
lets keep everything crossed that all those extra measures you are taking this time help and this one sticks, it’s a great sign you saw a heartbeat last week……. I know that some of us have seen heartbeats before so it doesn’t always give us the reassurance it should though which is heartbreaking!!

@LostFox82 @Emily090 …… ladies I seem to have gone the other way this time on the scan front and am now wondering whether to book one for the end of this week. I know rationally having more scans won’t change the outcome of anything but I’ve now convinced myself that it’s gone wrong so I’d rather know sooner rather than later! ……. I hate my brain sometimes, I’m such a catastrophist!!! I do this all the time and I feel incredibly lucky my husband has the Patience of a saint!

hope everyone is feeling ok!!! X

Emily090 · 03/05/2022 08:22

morning ladies

@Willow11981 im starting to the same way about a scan, but just wonder if I’m ready for any heartbreak and then I think if it is good news, I’ll continue to worry for the next few weeks. I also don’t know if I’ll physically be able to walk into the hospital for a scan so…. Argh! But I think if it will help you feel calm you should absolutely book a scan, maybe earlier than the end of the week as I can’t imagine your sleeping well worrying. Any more symptoms over the weekend? I felt awful last night - woke this morning feeling better and then decided somethings wrong 😂 it’s so silly! But understandable I know.

@Needsomeadvice33 So sorry for your previous losses, it seems you have really investigated into what could possibly help this time around, I have all my fingers crossed for you. I’ve also upped myself on new tablets, hopefully it has some effect but it’s only time will tell.

can I ask a silly question to you all, with my previous pregnancies I’ve fallen quite quickly after my period has ended, and I’ve always known the date we fell, it similar this time but a week after period ended and we only DTD twice - do I count that date as how many weeks I am or end of period?

thanks - sorry if I sound stupid.

x

Willow11981 · 03/05/2022 08:39

@Emily090 ….. you should count from the 1st day of your last period. So mine was 28th Feb which should put me at 9+1 today but I was tracking ovulation so I know I ovulated around day 17 which puts me back a couple of days ( as they typically assume ov on around day 14). My scan last Tues measured me at 7+6 which makes me 8+6 today. Do you know the first day of your last period? Maybe you are further on than you think if you are counting from end??

workwise I won’t be able to fit a scan in before Thursday/Friday so I’ll just hold out till then if I do decide to go! I’m not a great sleeper anyway so it won’t make much difference 😂.

Maybe you should go and get a scan as it could very well be positive news and put your mind at rest ( if only for a little while) ?

No more symptoms really, they have stayed much the same for a couple of weeks, I’m a little tired but that’s nothing new really as I don’t sleep well at night plus I get uncomfortabley full after eating ….. but maybe I’m just shovelling too much in!! Ha ha :

God this really messes with your head doesn’t it! I’m not sure I can put myself through it again if it doesn’t work this time! X

Emily090 · 03/05/2022 08:53

@Willow11981 They sound like good steady symptoms, especially as they haven’t changed - I also have the fullness one, I then I feel sick 😂

see how you feel but there’s definitely no harm in going for another, it’s your body and baby and I know we all so desperately want to be excited. 1 miscarriage is cruel and awful but two plus is just a big mix of heartbreaking, excitement stealing and head f*!

First day of last period was the 7th Feb and I ovulated on the 21st Feb - I’ll have a look when I get a chance because maybe I’m wrong with weeks - would love if it said I was 12 weeks today 😂😂😂😂 ( obviously not possible)

xxx

Willow11981 · 03/05/2022 09:27

@Emily090 ……. If your last period started on 7th feb that does make you 12+1 ???????? Omg I think you should book a scan asap!!! How good would that be!
……. unless you meant to write 7th mar?? X

Mawitchy · 03/05/2022 10:28

Hello everyone,

please can I join? I’ve had a little read through the thread, sadly in a very similar boat so sending lots of solidarity to you all x

@LostFox82 hello :) I also have two DCs, aged 2 and 4. But 3 MMC in last 12 months, (and 1 between DCs). My GP tried to refer me to recurrent miscarriage clinic, we got a response from the consultant last week. It was incredibly blunt. He dismissed me due to the fact I have two children “it is extremely unlikely there is anything wrong with this woman you have referred” he wrote.
In a way it’s by the by because I’m 8+3 and if this doesn’t work out I’m not going to try again. Had a scan Saturday and all ok then. I was very surprised as had about 5 days of brown/red bleeding between 5 and 6 weeks.

@Willow11981 this may have come up already, but just wanted to mention that NICE guidelines published in November last year states that women should be offered progesterone if they’ve experienced bleeding (even with no prior losses) or they have experienced one prior loss (even if not experienced bleeding in current pregnancy). My GP wasn’t aware of this but when I referred him to the guidance he wrote me a prescription!
