17 weeks and I think I'm losing/lost the baby

Had another thread about midwife not finding the heartbeat and how I'm having a scan tomorrow, but I'm having cramps today in my lower back and down my thighs as if I'm about to come on and really sharp pains in my right hand side. I'm convinced I've lost the baby and my body is starting to catch up. I have tried phoning my midwife I don't think she's working today as no answer, I'm too early to go to the ward. What can I do? Or do I have to just sit tight until tomorrow? Sad

Sorry @OopsImDoingItAgain didn’t see your last post.

Sorry that must be a real worry. It’s not over though. Tomorrow you will know for sure. Thinking of you

YellowChickpea · 20/03/2022 18:13

Name change for this but I'm a midwife and at 16 weeks you do not want to miscarry at home, you may bleed heavily and baby will be the size of your hand. So sorry tou are going through this. You need to phone MAC/Triage and advise them that you are on your way in as now bleeding and cramping.

USaYwHatNow · 20/03/2022 18:15

I'm so pissed off on your behalf at the protocol within your maternity unit. Every unit I've worked in (midwife) usually tries to auscultate the fetal heart between 16-17 weeks. If we can't find it, because by then your uterus is above the pubic bone and therefore the FH should be audible, we either get a colleague in to try or we refer straight into hospital for a colleague to try and auscultate and then if still not found to scan. I can't believe they're making you wait, even until the next day!! Most midwives including myself manage to find their own baby's FH at 10+ weeks. I'm so sad that they're leaving you all that time to worry. Makes a mockery of the whole 'don't wait at home if you're worried about movements, come straight in' when a bloody professional hasn't heard an FH and just let's you sit on it all night!

I'm glad you've called them back. If they can't find An FH when you're there will thy still make you wait until tomorrow for a scan? That just seems bloody cruel.

Is your maternity unit a small unit?

USaYwHatNow · 20/03/2022 18:17

There must be a Registrar on call in the unit with scanning skills/capability, who could at least identify they FH on scan if nothing else

SwayingInTime · 20/03/2022 18:25

Exactly what I logged on to post. I’m sorry this is happening and sorry it’s on a Sunday but any A and E at a reasonable size hospital (and any one with a maternity unit) will have access to the scan and doctor that you need. A and E is totally appropriate (given your maternity triage is from 20wks - this kind of limbo period is why I am glad we see from 16wks).

Hopefully the fact that the OP has not posted recently means she is getting some help . Best wishes 💐

Karwomannghia · 20/03/2022 18:32

So sorry to hear this, if you are bleeding a lot you need to be seen.

twinsetandpearl · 20/03/2022 18:34

So sorry OP

I'd go straight to the hospital now that you have bleeding - I've miscarried at home and at 17 weeks it isn't safe to do if it does happen especially with a young child with you xx

Friendlyfired · 20/03/2022 18:36

I'm so sorry you are going through this op. I hope you are getting to the hospital at the moment. If you are losing your baby, I'm so sorry. I've been there at this gestation and it's so hard. I wouldn't stay at home. My waters went when I was in the hospital and I ended up with a horrible infection that required 6 nights of a hospital stay.

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/03/2022 18:40

Please go
To a&E

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 20/03/2022 18:59

Oh op I'm so sorry you're having to go through this I don't know what to say.
Please get to a&e asap

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 20/03/2022 19:03

@mynameisbrian

Sorry but if you are miscarrying there is nothing anyone can do about it. It does sound like you have got yourself into a heightened state of anxiety due to reading about other posts finding no heartbeat on scans. That may be the case tomorrow or it may not. This is not an emergency and you would be better to go for your scan tomorrow as planned. A bang to the head is a separate issue and if you think you have a serious head injury go to a and e.

(I should add I have had 3 miscarriages, 1 ectopic and 2 missed miscarriages one at 22 weeks, So I do understand the anxiety and fear)

Not an emergency ?? She's 17 weeks, been waiting for a scan after the midwife couldn't find her baby's heartbeat and now she's bleeding!! If this isn't the time for a heightened state I don't know what is! I can't believe how awful some people can be
LeftieLucy · 20/03/2022 19:07

I’m so sorry OP.

Echoing the posters advising you to go in and be seen.

I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks which started with needing a pad and ended in a catergory 2 haemorrhage 3 hours later. Please at least call someone x

chanceux · 20/03/2022 19:07

I am so sorry that you are going through this. Fingers crossed that all will be fine. 💐

Christmas1988 · 20/03/2022 19:09

Are you sure it’s not a UTI? Sounds very likely with the regular toilet visits, pain and cramping. Please try not to worry, the DR on 111 was awful to me when I thought I as having a miscarriage, he made me panic more and said ‘well what do you want me to do about it’ so I strongly urge you to wait for your appointment tomorrow! Best of luck

User1367349 · 20/03/2022 19:09

I hope you are in a place of safety and getting help.

Sending good wishes 💐

LeftieLucy · 20/03/2022 19:09

Sorry if that sounded scaremongering- it really wasn’t intended to, but I couldn’t think of a way to say it without it being, iyswim.

FannylovesDick · 20/03/2022 19:13

@OopsImDoingItAgain

I've started bleeding Sad
You need to go to hospital. Call your useless arse of a DH back to take you. You need medical advice.
StrandedStarfish · 20/03/2022 19:15

Please go to A&E

OopsImDoingItAgain · 20/03/2022 19:15

Been A&E got seen very quickly they did a scan on the small machine and couldn't find a heartbeat but cervix is closed and minimal bleeding so I don't really know what's going on at all. They've said I can go home and come back in morning for scan or stay in if they can find a bed for me. I said stay in Incase it gets bad in the night and I won't be able to get back without bringing toddler in car they then rang maternity ward in front of me asking for a bed as none anywhere else not heard anything more yet Sad
